The gadgets worth adding to a household are the ones that remove a task someone repeats every day: switching off lights on the way out, checking the family calendar at breakfast, or sending the same reminder for the third time. This guide organizes the options around those recurring friction points rather than around novelty or a ranking.
The evidence behind this topic describes nine device types, one of which is a family internet service rather than a physical device, so the list below covers those nine. It doesn’t rank them, and it doesn’t include prices or independent test results, because the sources available for this guide don’t provide either.

The clearest advice comes from a May 26, 2026 Verizon article, which is sponsored by Verizon. Its author quotes Peter Shankman, an author and podcaster, who says: “The enemy in this situation is decision fatigue.” The practical takeaway is to start small: choose one routine first, and add a device only when it removes a task you repeat.

The leaving-home moment is where most households lose the most small tasks: lights left on, fans running in empty rooms, and a vacuum that never gets started. The three devices below address that transition.
1. Smart plug
Task it addresses: Turning off a lamp or fan, or switching on a device, without walking to the switch. Verizon suggests using a smart plug to manage lights or fans and to build a one-touch “out the door” routine.

Setup: Plug the smart plug into a wall outlet, plug the lamp or fan into the smart plug, add it in the app for the platform you use, and create a routine that runs when you leave.
Compatibility check: Confirm that the plugged-in appliance is suitable for switching by a smart plug, and that the plug works with the platform your phones already use. Google Home lists smart plugs among its lighting and control devices, but compatibility should be checked on the exact product.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. Smart light bulbs and switches
Task it addresses: Lights that follow a schedule or a cue, such as turning on as the household wakes up or turning off when the last person leaves. Google Home describes lighting as one of its supported device categories.
Setup: Add each bulb or switch in the app for your chosen platform, then build the routine there. Some bulbs need a hub, and some switches need an electrician to install them. Check the product page first.
Compatibility check: Look for explicit support for the platform you use. Google describes Matter and “Works with Google Home” compatibility, so check which of these labels appears on the exact product.
3. Robot vacuum
Task it addresses: Floor cleaning that happens without a reminder. Apple’s Home app example starts a robot vacuum when you leave home, or lets you ask Siri to clean a room.

Compatibility check: Confirm the vacuum works with the home platform in your Home app, not just with its own manufacturer app. The Apple example depends on a compatible device and setup. The sources establish that the category can be automated, not how well any model cleans.
Shared reminders and family calendars
Most household friction is not about devices doing things; it is about people knowing what is happening. Two categories address that directly.
4. Smart speaker
Task it addresses: Verbal reminders, voice-managed shopping and to-do lists, and a scheduled daily rundown. Verizon recommends using a smart speaker for shared calendars, scheduled daily rundowns, voice-managed lists, and reminders.

Setup: Connect the speaker to the assistant account your household uses, add the shared calendar and lists, and schedule the daily rundown in that assistant’s app.
Compatibility check: Make sure the speaker’s assistant matches the calendar and list apps the family already uses. A speaker is also a microphone in the room, which is covered in the comparison table below.

Setup: Place the display where the household gathers, such as a kitchen counter, and link it to the same shared calendar used by the speaker.

The home hub and the compatibility layer
Many routines depend on a hub. A hub is the device that lets your phone control devices when you’re away from home and runs automations when no phone is in range.
6. Home hub
Task it addresses: Remote access and automation for compatible accessories. Apple identifies the HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV as possible home hubs for the Home app.
Setup: Sign in to the same Apple account on the hub and your phones, then confirm the hub is listed in the Home app before building automations.

Compatibility check: A hub only helps devices in the same ecosystem. Matter is a shared standard that Google describes as supported across its products, so check whether each device lists Matter or the platform’s own label. Samsung SmartThings describes connected-device automation and example routines, which is another platform to compare if your household uses Samsung devices.
Doors and security
Entry points are where families want notifications most, and where the privacy questions are sharpest.
7. Video doorbell
Task it addresses: Knowing who is at the door without checking in person. Google and Roku describe security cameras and doorbells as smart-home categories.
Setup: Mount the doorbell, install its app on each family phone, and decide which phones receive alerts.
Compatibility check: Verify the doorbell works with your platform and that its alerts reach the phones you use. The sources describe these as categories and do not establish that every household needs one.
8. Security camera
Task it addresses: Watching an entrance, a driveway, or a room when someone is away. Like the doorbell, this is a category described by Google and Roku, not a claim that any particular camera performs well.

Digital boundaries
Household internet schedules are the most sensitive gadget category, because they affect every device on the network at once.
9. Family internet controls
Task it addresses: Pausing internet access, sharing location, and setting app limits. Verizon’s Family Plus service describes these features. Peter Shankman, quoted in the same Verizon article, puts the underlying idea this way: “Every choice you force your brain to make is a small tax.”
Setup: Enable the service through Verizon, assign each family member’s devices, and set pause times and app limits in the service’s controls.
Compatibility check: Verify current availability, platform support, and terms with Verizon before signing up. The feature list comes from Verizon’s own description, and the sources do not independently establish how well these controls work.
Comparing the options
The table below compares the nine entries on the axes that matter most for a household choice. Where a source does not state a value for a specific product, the table says so.

How to set up one routine without overbuying
Start with the routine that causes the most daily friction, then follow these steps in order.
- Pick one routine, such as leaving home, and write down the three tasks it currently requires.
- Choose a single platform, such as Apple Home, Google Home, or Samsung SmartThings, and confirm the phones in your household can use it.
- Check the exact product for support on that platform before buying. Look for the platform’s own label or Matter.
- If the platform calls for a hub, add the hub first and confirm it appears in the app.
- Add one device, build the routine in the app, and run it for several days before adding anything else.
- Add the next device only if it removes a task you repeat, not because a feature looks useful.
Checklist before you buy
- The device works with the platform your household already uses.
- The product page states Matter or the platform’s own compatibility label.
- You know whether a hub is required, and whether the hub is already in the home.
- You know which devices contain a microphone or camera, and who in the household can see their data.
- You have confirmed current availability and terms for any family-service subscription.
What these sources do and don’t establish
The Verizon article is sponsored by Verizon, so its product and service suggestions are vendor editorial rather than independent testing. Apple’s Home app page, Google’s Google Home page, Roku’s Smart Home page, and Samsung’s SmartThings page describe their own platforms and examples. They are useful for understanding what each platform can do, but they don’t compare products or measure performance.
A Verizon article also cites a “2026 survey” with household-device percentages, but the publisher is not named there, so those figures are not used in this guide.
