The nine options below range from desktop and terminal interfaces to web-based backup managers, so the right choice depends on whether you need to create and schedule backups or mainly browse and restore existing snapshots.
This is a practical shortlist, not an official Restic ranking or a hands-on test. Check each project’s current platform support, installation instructions, and maintenance status before adopting it.

What a Restic wrapper adds
Restic itself handles encrypted backups to local and online storage. It supports Linux, BSD, macOS, and Windows, and transfers changed parts of files rather than treating every backup as a full copy. Its stable documentation is for Restic 0.19.1 and covers repository setup, scheduling, snapshots, integrity checks, restores, pruning, encryption, and scripting. Restic’s official site and stable documentation describe the engine and its workflows.
A wrapper may provide a graphical interface, a browser-based management page, or a terminal UI. Those labels do not guarantee the same feature set: some tools manage backup jobs, while others focus on inspecting or restoring snapshots. You can also use the Restic command-line interface directly; a front-end is an additional way to work with the engine, not a replacement requirement.

The 9 free and open-source Restic wrappers
The June 15, 2026 LinuxLinks roundup includes these nine projects. The descriptions below distinguish their stated roles; they are not a feature-by-feature verification of every current release. See the roundup for its original list.
Déjà Dup
A desktop-oriented GUI integrated with GNOME. Check the current project instructions for Restic backend setup and supported platforms before relying on it for a particular system.
Backrest
A web UI and orchestrator for Restic, aimed at managing backup workflows through a browser. Its project description includes repository creation, snapshot browsing and restoration, scheduling, health operations, and importing existing repositories. Backrest’s project page is the place to confirm current behavior and setup requirements.

Zerobyte
A Restic-based automation tool with web management, scheduling, retention controls, and support for several source protocols. Its documentation identifies the project as version 0.x and under active development, so capabilities and setup details may change. Consult Zerobyte’s documentation for current details.
Restic Browser
A simple GUI built with Tauri for browsing and restoring existing Restic repositories. It is a more limited fit if you need a complete interface for creating and managing scheduled backups. Check its project page for current platform and release information.
resticterm
A terminal-based UI written in C#. It is suited to users who prefer a keyboard-oriented terminal workflow; it is neither a desktop graphical application nor a browser-based interface.

Kubackup
A web UI written in Go. The roundup identifies its interface type, but that alone does not establish its feature coverage or deployment requirements. Read its current documentation before selecting it for a specific workflow.

Pluton
A self-hosted backup management platform. Verify the project’s current licensing, edition boundaries, and deployment details directly before adoption; the roundup’s brief description is not enough to establish them.
Resticity
A cross-platform Restic UI built with Wails. The community-maintained Awesome Restic index marks it archived, so treat availability and maintenance as concerns to check rather than assuming it remains actively maintained. The Awesome Restic index separates archived or inactive projects from its other listings.

Start with the work you want the tool to do, not with a universal ranking. The options are not interchangeable, and the available descriptions do not support naming a single best wrapper for every user.
Recommended Free Tools
- For browser-based backup management: Backrest and Zerobyte are the clearest automation-oriented examples in this list. Review their current setup and feature documentation first.
- For viewing or restoring snapshots: Restic Browser is explicitly focused on browsing and restoring existing repositories, rather than serving as a full backup-management GUI.
- For terminal work: resticterm is the terminal UI option among the nine.
- For a desktop GUI: Déjà Dup and Restic Backup GX are listed as desktop-oriented choices, but verify current Restic setup and platform support.
- For self-hosting: Backrest, Zerobyte, Kubackup, and Pluton are described as web or self-hosted options. Compare their documented deployment requirements and workflow coverage rather than inferring them from the label alone.
Before committing, check whether the wrapper can use or import your existing repository, whether it supports your operating system or intended server/container setup, and whether you can still perform essential recovery tasks with Restic itself. Look at recent releases and explicit maturity notices too: activity is a signal to investigate, not proof of security or quality. The Awesome Restic index provides a broader directory with activity markers and a separate archived or inactive section, but it is not a security audit or support guarantee. Browse the index.

Choose a repository destination as well
The wrapper is only one part of a backup plan. Restic documents repositories on local directories, SFTP, a REST server, Amazon S3 and compatible storage, Backblaze B2, Microsoft Azure Blob Storage, Google Cloud Storage, and additional services through rclone. Restic’s repository documentation explains destination options.
An external hard drive is one optional way to provide a local-directory destination; it is not required by Restic or any wrapper. Choose a destination and recovery approach that suit your needs, and confirm the selected front-end supports that repository type.
