If the intended printer keeps being replaced, check Windows’ default-printer setting next. These nine checks move from quick, per-print selection changes to Windows, driver, and managed-device causes; stop when the intended printer is selected.
Start by identifying what “wrong printer” means
Notice whether Edge merely preselects the wrong printer, or whether a job goes to a different device after you deliberately select the right one. A preselected printer points first to Edge’s choice, Windows’ default setting, or an organization policy. A job that routes elsewhere despite the correct selection calls for checking which printer entry and queue are actually being used.

The steps below are for Windows. Edge also supports opening the system print dialog on macOS, but the Windows default-printer settings described here do not apply to Mac.

1. Select the intended printer in Edge
Open the page you want to print and press Ctrl+P. In the printer list, choose the intended installed printer, check that it is the correct device, and then print. Edge’s dialog allows you to choose among installed printers, so this is the quickest fix when the wrong option is simply selected.

2. Reopen the print dialog and select again
If the intended printer appears unavailable or Edge reports a print-preview problem, cancel the dialog, open it again, and select the printer once more. A temporary connectivity problem can interfere with printer availability; this retry is more appropriate than changing Windows settings when the printer is only intermittently missing.
3. Try Windows’ system print dialog
In Edge’s print flow, choose Print using system dialog, or press Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows. Confirm the intended printer in the Windows dialog before sending the job. This helps distinguish a choice made in Edge’s dialog from one made in the system print flow.

4. Set a fixed Windows default printer
To make one printer the system default, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. Turn off Let Windows manage my default printer, select the intended installed printer, and choose Set as default. If that control is missing, check that automatic default management is off.

5. Decide whether Windows should follow your most recently used printer
When Let Windows manage my default printer is on, Windows can make the last printer you used the default. Leave the setting off if you want a fixed default; turn it on only if you want Windows to follow your recent printer use, such as when you regularly switch between locations. This choice changes Windows’ default behavior, not just the selection for one Edge print job.

6. Check for missing or duplicate printer entries
In Edge’s printer list, make sure the selected entry corresponds to the intended device and is available. If several entries look similar, verify the device name before printing rather than deleting entries at random. If the intended printer is missing or was installed incorrectly, Windows’ troubleshooting guidance supports removing and reinstalling that printer. Don’t remove a working printer merely because Edge selected another one.
7. Restart Edge and retry the print
For a print-preview failure, close Edge, start it again, reopen the page, and choose the preferred printer. Restarting is a low-risk retry for a preview problem; it is not a guaranteed way to change a wrong default.

8. Test whether other apps have the same problem
Try printing a test document from Word or another Windows application. If those applications also have trouble, investigate Windows, the printer, its connection, or its driver instead of treating the issue as Edge-only. Windows’ printer guidance includes the Get Help printer troubleshooter, connection checks, reinstalling a printer, driver installation, and print-spooler troubleshooting; use those steps when the test points to a broader problem.

If only Edge is affected
Check the printer manufacturer’s current driver and retry Edge. A driver check is more relevant when another application prints successfully but Edge does not.

If Edge repeatedly starts with a particular printer on a work or school device
Ask your administrator to review Edge’s DefaultPrinterSelection policy. Microsoft documents that it determines printer-selection rules when a user first tries to print; a rule can match a printer by ID or display-name pattern. If no configured rule matches within its timeout, Edge can fall back to its built-in PDF printer or no printer. That is managed policy behavior, not proof that ordinary Edge installations universally change printer selections. Leave policy or registry changes to IT.
Which layer should you change?
- One print job: Select the printer in Edge or the Windows system dialog.
- The system’s default: Change Windows’ automatic default-management setting and set the preferred default.
- Printer missing or broader printing failure: Check availability and compare with another app before considering reinstall, connection, or driver steps.
- Managed device repeatedly choosing a specific printer: Have IT check Edge policy.
Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting page notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If you are troubleshooting on Windows 10, account for that support status when deciding what help and updates are available.
