Cloudflare Pages is the best default for most free static JavaScript sites. Choose GitHub Pages for repository-based documentation, Vercel for a personal Next.js project, Netlify for forms and deploy previews, Render when a Node service may come later, Firebase for Firebase applications, Amplify for AWS projects, GitLab Pages for GitLab-native CI/CD, and Surge for the quickest command-line deployment.
This April 2026 edition uses plan information checked on August 18, 2026. Free tiers, quotas and commercial terms can change. The list primarily covers browser-delivered JavaScript; a Node.js API, database, WebSocket server or scheduled job is a separate hosting requirement.

What “hosting JavaScript” actually means
Static frontend hosting
A static host serves files such as index.html, compiled JavaScript, CSS and images. That is enough for vanilla JavaScript, Vite production builds, React, Vue, Svelte, Angular, static Astro sites, documentation and portfolios.
Dynamic or full-stack JavaScript
If your project needs Node.js, API routes, server-side rendering, serverless or edge functions, WebSockets, background jobs, authentication, uploads or a database, you need a runtime or managed backend as well. You can host the frontend on one of the services below and run the backend elsewhere; uploading server.js to a static site does not start a Node process.

What “free” should mean
- No mandatory payment for a basic public deployment.
- A persistent free tier, not merely a short trial.
- A provider URL and HTTPS.
- Clear disclosure of quotas, fair-use rules, commercial restrictions, cards, suspension and sleep behavior.
A custom domain is usually supported by the host but must still be registered separately. DNS, email hosting and website hosting are different services.
The nine services
1. Cloudflare Pages — best overall static host
Cloudflare Pages is the strongest general choice for a production static frontend. The Free plan lists 500 builds per month, one concurrent build, a 20-minute build timeout and up to 20,000 files per site. Its redirect limits are 2,000 static and 100 dynamic redirects. See the current limits at Cloudflare Pages limits.
Connect a Git repository, set the framework’s build command and publish directory, and Pages deploys on pushes. It is suitable for Vite, React, Vue, Svelte and static-site generators, with custom domains and global edge delivery. Backend work moves to Cloudflare Workers or other Cloudflare products, so do not assume Pages itself is a general Node server.
For a single-page app, define fallback behavior with a _redirects file or Pages routing rules, then test a direct visit to a nested URL. Choose Pages for traffic-sensitive static sites; avoid it if you specifically need a conventional always-running Node process.
2. GitHub Pages — best for documentation and open source
GitHub Pages publishes HTML, CSS and JavaScript from a repository, optionally through a build process. GitHub Free supports Pages in public repositories. It provides github.io addresses and custom domains. Details are in GitHub’s Pages documentation.

For the standard user-site workflow:
git clone https://github.com/USERNAME/USERNAME.github.io
cd USERNAME.github.io
echo "Hello World" > index.html
git add --all
git commit -m "Initial commit"
git push -u origin main
The site appears at https://username.github.io; the official quick start is at pages.github.com. GitHub Pages is static only: it does not provide a trusted place for secrets, APIs, databases or server-side authentication. Browser-history SPA routes may need a 404.html fallback workaround or hash routing, so test refreshes rather than assuming every route works.
3. Netlify — best for platform features
Netlify’s current Free plan is listed as $0 forever and includes 300 credits per month, custom domains with SSL, deploy previews, a global CDN and one concurrent build. Production deploys, bandwidth, compute and requests consume credits; older “100 GB bandwidth” comparisons may describe a retired model. Check Netlify pricing.
Netlify is a good fit for static sites needing forms, redirects, functions, previews and a friendly dashboard. Use a _redirects file or netlify.toml for SPA fallbacks. Functions are not the same as an unrestricted, always-on Node server, and quota exhaustion can stop or limit deployments.

4. Vercel — best for Next.js
Vercel’s Hobby plan is $0 per month and includes repository deployment, automatic CI/CD, HTTPS, a global CDN and DDoS mitigation. Pro is listed at $20 per month. Crucially, Hobby is for personal, non-commercial use; a monetized blog, client site, business landing page or commercial SaaS should not be placed on Hobby without checking the current terms. See Vercel pricing.
Vercel is the natural choice for Next.js, preview-heavy work and applications using server rendering, middleware or API routes. A plain React static build can run there too, but “React support” does not mean every Next.js server feature is free. Configure SPA rewrites in vercel.json when a client-side router needs them.

5. Render Static Sites — best bridge to a Node service
Render deploys static sites from a linked Git repository, redeploys on pushes and provides an onrender.com URL, custom domains, managed TLS, CDN delivery, compression, HTTP/2 and DDoS protection. See Render static sites.
Render is useful when the frontend may later sit beside a Node, Python or Go service. Do not confuse the products: Render’s free dynamic web services spin down after 15 minutes without inbound traffic and take about one minute to start, while that warning applies to free web services rather than static sites. The behavior is documented at Render’s free-services page. Configure and test SPA rewrites using Render’s current rewrite settings.
6. Firebase Hosting — best for Firebase applications
Firebase Hosting fits applications already using Firebase Authentication, Firestore, Storage or Cloud Functions. Distinguish classic Hosting from Firebase App Hosting: their architecture and billing are not interchangeable. Firebase’s pricing page lists App Hosting no-cost allowances of up to 10 GiB monthly outgoing bandwidth and 5 GB storage; verify which product you use at Firebase pricing.
Hosting configuration commonly lives in firebase.json, where rewrites can send unknown browser routes to index.html. Firebase is a poor reason to adopt the ecosystem for a tiny static page that needs none of its backend services.
7. AWS Amplify Hosting — best for AWS-connected teams
Amplify is compelling when the application already uses Cognito, AppSync, Lambda, DynamoDB, S3 or another AWS service. It supports Git-based deployments, but IAM, billing and configuration are more involved than on frontend-first hosts. Current quotas and pricing are not stated here; verify them in Amplify Hosting, Amplify pricing and the Amplify documentation before committing. Configure SPA rewrites in the Amplify hosting rules.

8. GitLab Pages — best for GitLab-native CI/CD
GitLab Pages publishes sites through GitLab pipelines, typically defined in .gitlab-ci.yml. It is most convenient when source code, permissions and CI/CD already live in GitLab. Current plan quotas are not stated here; check GitLab Pages documentation and GitLab pricing. It is less attractive than GitHub Pages when your repository is already on GitHub. SPA fallback rules belong in the generated site and GitLab deployment configuration; test direct nested URLs.
9. Surge — simplest CLI deployment
Surge is a minimal static host for demos, assignments and prototypes:
npm install --global surge
cd path/to/project
surge
Its official site documents free publishing and free custom-domain deployment through a CNAME at surge.sh. Surge is not a substitute for previews, team controls, functions, access management or a managed backend. Because fallback behavior can change, verify the current SPA method and test a refreshed nested route before relying on history-based routing.
Build settings that work for most frontends
For a Vite project, the usual settings are:
| Field | Typical value |
|---|---|
| Install command | npm ci |
| Build command | npm run build |
| Publish directory | dist |
| Node version | Pin with engines, .nvmrc or provider settings |
| Environment variables | Only non-secret, browser-safe values |
Create React App commonly outputs build; Angular often uses dist/<project-name>; Astro commonly uses dist. Next.js is not automatically a simple static directory unless you configure static export. Start with:
npm create vite@latest my-app
cd my-app
npm install
npm run build
- Connect the repository or deploy the generated directory with the provider’s CLI.
- Enter the framework-specific build command and output directory.
- Deploy and open the provider URL.
- Click through the app, then directly open and refresh a nested route such as
/dashboard. - Add the custom domain, configure DNS and confirm HTTPS.
- Inspect the built assets to ensure no secret was bundled.
Secrets and frontend environment variables
Anything shipped to a browser can be inspected. Never put database passwords, private API keys, cloud secret keys, JWT signing secrets, payment-provider secrets or service-account JSON in frontend code. Names such as VITE_API_KEY, NEXT_PUBLIC_API_URL and REACT_APP_PUBLIC_CONFIG are normally compiled into public assets. Put privileged operations behind a server-side function or backend proxy.

How to choose without getting trapped by the free tier
- Choose Cloudflare Pages for a commercial static site where generous limits and custom domains matter.
- Choose GitHub Pages for public documentation, open-source projects and simple portfolios.
- Choose Vercel for a personal Next.js project; use a paid plan for commercial work covered by its terms.
- Choose Netlify when forms, previews, redirects and functions justify credit-based metering.
- Choose Render when you want static hosting now and a separate Node service later.
- Choose Firebase or Amplify when the surrounding Google or AWS backend is already a requirement.
- Choose GitLab Pages when GitLab CI/CD is the center of the workflow.
- Choose Surge for a tiny folder and a terminal-first deployment.
Keep source code in Git, retain control of DNS, store redirects and headers in the repository, document environment variables and test a second host before a migration. That portability matters more than a small difference in free-tier marketing numbers.
FAQ
Can I host a React app for free?
Yes. A production React build is static and can run on Cloudflare Pages, GitHub Pages, Netlify, Vercel, Render, Firebase Hosting, Amplify, GitLab Pages or Surge. Set the correct output directory and configure SPA fallback behavior.
Can I host a Node.js backend for free?
Some providers offer limited functions or free web services, but a static host does not execute Node.js. Render can run a free web service that sleeps after inactivity; other platforms impose function, credit or usage limits. Choose based on runtime, database, WebSocket and uptime requirements.
Which services support custom domains?
GitHub Pages, Netlify, Render and Surge document custom-domain support, and the other major platforms also provide domain configuration. You still pay the registrar for the domain unless you use the provider subdomain.
Is Vercel free for commercial websites?
Vercel’s Hobby plan is described as personal, non-commercial use. A commercial project should review the current terms and normally use an eligible paid plan.
What happens when I exceed a free quota?
The result depends on the provider: deployments or resources may be blocked, usage may be throttled, a project may sleep, or an account may require an upgrade. Read the current plan and limits page before launch and monitor usage.
Can I move my site later?
Usually. Keep the repository, build configuration, redirects, headers, DNS access and an inventory of environment variables. Provider-specific functions and backend services may require rewriting during migration.
The Bottom Line
For most free static JavaScript deployments, start with Cloudflare Pages. Pick a different service when your repository, framework or backend makes the trade-off explicit: GitHub Pages for GitHub-native static content, Vercel for personal Next.js, Netlify for platform features, Render for a future Node service, Firebase or Amplify for ecosystem integration, GitLab Pages for GitLab CI/CD, and Surge for a tiny CLI-only site.
