800 Gigabit Ethernet (800GbE) is Ethernet operation at a nominal data rate of 800 gigabits per second (Gb/s). IEEE Std 802.3df-2024 defines the MAC parameters and physical-layer options for it. That rate describes the Ethernet link, not a guarantee that an application will deliver 800 Gb/s of usable payload.
What does 800 Gigabit Ethernet mean?
800GbE is a family of Ethernet implementations operating at a nominal 800 Gb/s. The standard concerns the transfer of IEEE 802.3-format frames and specifies both the media access control (MAC) parameters and physical layers (PHYs) used to carry them.

Gb/s means gigabits per second; it is not the same as gigabytes per second. Nor should the nominal Ethernet rate be read as application throughput: protocol overhead and the equipment and traffic involved mean the usable rate can differ.
Which standard defines 800GbE?
The published standard is IEEE Std 802.3df-2024, titled “IEEE Standard for Ethernet Amendment 9: Media Access Control Parameters for 800 Gb/s and Physical Layers and Management Parameters for 400 Gb/s and 800 Gb/s Operation.” IEEE lists it as active. Its standard page gives a publication date of March 15, 2024, and formal Board Approval date of February 15, 2024. The IEEE standard page says the amendment adds MAC parameters, PHYs and management parameters for transferring IEEE 802.3-format frames at 400 Gb/s and 800 Gb/s. It adds Clauses 169–173 and Annexes 172A and 173A to IEEE Std 802.3-2022.

How does the 800GbE lane structure work?
IEEE describes 800GbE as using a parallel eight-lane (x8) structure. The architecture allows an eight-lane port to be configured as one eight-lane implementation, two four-lane implementations, four two-lane implementations or eight one-lane implementations. This describes lane-configuration flexibility; it does not establish that every product supports every configuration or that arbitrary devices interoperate.
The lane arrangement is one reason 800GbE is not a single connector or universal transceiver. The PHY and physical medium determine how a particular implementation carries the signal.

What media and reach options are described?
IEEE’s overview summarizes 800 Gb/s implementations across copper, multimode fiber and single-mode fiber. Its listed reach categories are tied to the relevant medium and PHY; they are not guarantees for any cable, optic or installation.
| Medium | Reach categories shown for 800 Gb/s | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Copper cable | Not stated in the overview table | The overview identifies copper as a medium; consult the applicable PHY and product specifications for distance and compatibility. |
| Multimode fiber (MMF) | 50 m and 100 m | These are categories in IEEE’s summary table, not a universal reach promise for all MMF equipment. |
| Single-mode fiber (SMF) | 500 m and 2 km | These are categories in IEEE’s summary table, not a universal reach promise for all SMF equipment. |
The categories above come from the IEEE 800 Gb/s overview. The applicable PHY details and the vendor’s specifications determine whether a particular link meets its target distance.

How should you assess an 800G cable or transceiver?
Start with the link you need to build, rather than choosing by the “800G” label alone. An optic or cable has to match both endpoints and the specific PHY and medium in use.
- Medium and PHY: Identify whether the link uses twinaxial copper, multimode fiber or single-mode fiber, and select the corresponding PHY implementation.
- Distance: Match the required link length to the reach category for that PHY; do not treat a reach figure for one medium as applicable to another.
- Lane and port configuration: Confirm that the endpoints support the required lane arrangement and port division.
- Product compatibility: Verify host support, module or cable type, connector, fiber grade and vendor interoperability against the equipment specifications. The standard overview is not a product compatibility matrix.
For data-center links, 800GBASE-SR8 transceivers and multimode-fiber assemblies are examples of a product category; 800GBASE-CR8 twinaxial copper assemblies are another. These names alone do not confirm suitability for a specific host or link. Check the equipment documentation and the applicable standard before selecting a part.

What 800GbE does—and does not—tell you
- It identifies a nominal Ethernet operating rate of 800 Gb/s.
- It is defined in a published IEEE standard and supports multiple PHY and media implementations.
- It does not specify one universal connector, cable or transceiver.
- It does not promise 800 Gb/s of application payload throughput.
- It does not, by itself, establish what products are available or how widely 800GbE is deployed.
