There is no single best student credit card for everyone. Start with whether you can qualify and pay the bill in full each month; then compare rewards, fees, introductory APRs and travel needs. The options below are candidates from NerdWallet’s October 2026 comparison and issuer pages—not a verified reproduction of CNBC Select’s exact eight-card roundup. Offers and eligibility can change, so check each issuer’s current application disclosures.
How to choose a student credit card
Approval is not guaranteed just because you are enrolled in school. NerdWallet says applicants generally need a source of income. Discover says applicants for its student cards must be at least 18 and meet age-appropriate income requirements; it also says no credit score is required for those cards. Discover’s FAQ explains: “You don’t need a job to apply for a student credit card, but you must show income.” Income rules differ for applicants under 21 and those 21 or older. See Discover’s student-card information and NerdWallet’s student-card comparison.

- Check eligibility first. Review income requirements and any issuer guidance about credit history before applying.
- Match rewards to spending. A category card can outperform a flat-rate card for purchases you already make, but activation, selection rules and caps affect its value.
- Prioritize repayment. Rewards do not offset interest on a carried balance. Discover advises paying on time and avoiding a balance; late payments or other negative account activity can undermine credit-building efforts.
- Compare fees and APR terms. Note annual and foreign-transaction fees, any introductory APR and its duration, and the variable APR that applies afterward. Read the current application disclosures.
- For travel, check both acceptance and fees. No foreign-transaction fee does not guarantee a card will be accepted everywhere abroad.
Eight cards to consider
This is a practical comparison of candidates identified in NerdWallet’s October 2026 roundup and issuer materials. It is not presented as CNBC Select’s exact selection or as a best-to-worst ranking. The cited pages can change their offers and terms.

It has no annual fee and a six-month introductory 0% purchase APR. | Discover it Student Cash Back | Students willing to track rotating categories | Discover advertises 5% cash back in rotating quarterly categories after activation, up to the quarterly maximum, and 1% on other purchases. The issuer page lists a first-year dollar-for-dollar Cashback Match. Discover | Activate eligible categories and check the current quarterly maximum, terms and APR. |
| Capital One Savor Student Cash Rewards | Students who spend substantially on dining, groceries, entertainment or streaming | NerdWallet describes up to 3% in selected categories and a $0 annual fee. NerdWallet | Verify approval criteria, current APR and full issuer terms. |

Bankrate’s search result also describes it as a no-deposit option. NerdWallet; Bankrate | Confirm live eligibility and terms with Chase; the available information does not establish a student-specific product designation. |
| Bank of America Travel Rewards for Students | Students who want travel-oriented rewards and no foreign-transaction fee | Bank of America advertises 1.5 points per dollar on everyday purchases and 3 points per dollar on travel booked through BofA Travel, with no annual fee and no foreign-transaction fees. Bank of America | Check current bonus terms, post-introductory APR and application disclosures. |
Understand rewards, caps and introductory offers
Rotating or selected categories
Discover Student Cash Back requires activation for its quarterly 5% categories. Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards for Students involves choosing a category and has a combined quarterly spending cap for bonus-category and grocery/wholesale-club purchases; the category may be changed monthly. These cards can suit someone willing to manage the rules, but the headline rates do not apply to every purchase.

- WORKS WITH ALL STANDARD PRINTERS: Our cards work well with all standard ID card printers, including DC150i and Fargo HDP5000 Zebra P330i. Not for use with inkjet printers.
- MULTI-PURPOSE: These cards can be used to store personal information for photo ID's, financial information for credit card use or retailers who want to sell gift cards for their business.
- SECURE & COMPATIBLE: These printable cards are equipped with high level security chips and stripes. The SLE4442 Chip is perfect for use for bank cards
- AVAILABLE IN BULK QUANTITIES: These cards are best purchased in bulk, especially for professional use. That's why we have made them available in 10, 100, 200 and 400 packs.
Flat-rate rewards
A flat rate, such as the 1.5% described for the Quicksilver Student and Bank of America Unlimited Cash Rewards for Students, avoids tracking rotating categories. Whether that simplicity is more valuable than a category rate depends on where you spend and how much of that spending qualifies.
Introductory APRs are temporary
Discover lists a six-month 0% introductory purchase APR for Student Chrome; Bank of America lists introductory APRs for its student cards, and the Unlimited card page advertises 15 billing cycles. These offers expire. Check the current issuer disclosures for the subsequent variable APR, which applies if you carry a balance after the promotional period.

Using a first card to build healthy habits
- Pay every bill by its due date. Discover’s guidance is “Make all payments on time.” Consider setting a reminder or automatic payment for at least the required amount.
- Pay the statement balance in full when possible. Discover advises cardholders to “Avoid carrying a balance.” Unpaid purchases can accrue interest, so a reward is not a reason to spend more or postpone repayment.
- Track category requirements. Activate Discover’s quarterly categories or manage Bank of America’s selected category if you choose those products.
- Review statements and account terms. Look for unfamiliar transactions, changing offer details and any fees before they become a surprise.
