Your car’s OBD2 port can connect to more than a basic check-engine scanner. Depending on the device, vehicle and software, it can help you read diagnostic codes, view live data, check emissions readiness, access some additional systems, or send fleet and driving data to a connected service. These are different uses—not a promise that one plug-in device does everything.
What the OBD2 port is for
On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) monitors emissions-control and emissions-related components, along with some engine components. When the vehicle detects a malfunction or deterioration that may affect emissions, it can illuminate the Check Engine or Service Engine Soon light; sometimes it detects a problem before you notice symptoms. The EPA’s OBD FAQ explains this role.

A reader or adapter retrieves information from the vehicle. A code can point to a monitored system or fault, but it does not by itself establish the root cause or guarantee a repair. Standard OBD coverage is largely emissions-related; access to other modules depends on the vehicle and the diagnostic tool.

Eight useful things you can plug in
1. Handheld OBD2 code reader
A basic scan tool with its own screen can retrieve standard diagnostic trouble codes without requiring a phone or computer. Use the code as a starting point, then check it against reliable repair information; the code is not a diagnosis of every possible cause.

Check the vehicle, adapter, app and phone operating-system compatibility before buying; also review protocol support, voltage rating and wireless security.
3. USB adapter for a computer
A USB adapter connects the vehicle to a computer for use with compatible diagnostic software. OBDLink lists USB adapters and its OBDwiz software for Windows, as well as mobile-app support. Confirm the exact adapter’s operating-system and software requirements rather than assuming any USB scanner works with any computer.

Supports major OBDII protocols including CAN, ISO9141, KWP2000, J1850 VPW, and J1850 PWM. This automotive diagnostic scanner is designed for wide vehicle coverage; please check compatibility with your vehicle before purchase
6. Emissions-readiness monitor
A compatible app can show whether the vehicle’s emissions monitors report ready or incomplete. OBDLink describes checking monitor results and evaluating how a vehicle meets a state emissions standard. Readiness status can change with vehicle operation and repairs, and checking it is not the same as fixing a fault or guaranteeing an inspection pass. The EPA’s inspection and maintenance resource explains OBD’s role in emissions programs; check current rules with the authority in your area.
Do not clear codes as a way to try to pass an inspection: clearing can affect readiness, and it does not repair the underlying fault.

7. Fleet GPS or telematics tracker
Fleet trackers use the OBD2 connection as part of a connected vehicle-management service, rather than acting as simple personal code readers. Geotab describes its GO device as supplying fleet managers with location, engine diagnostics, driver-behavior information and alerts through its platform. Trackem describes trip and location information, driver monitoring and odometer data. The device’s usefulness depends on the service and platform behind it.
8. Usage-based insurance telematics device
OBD tracking devices are also described as having usage-based insurance applications. That describes a category, not a guarantee that a particular insurer offers a compatible program where you live or that joining will reduce your premium. Ask your insurer about current availability, program terms and what driving or vehicle data it collects.

Check compatibility before buying
OBDLink says its adapters work with OBD-II-compliant US cars and light trucks from model year 1996 onward, but cautions that compliance depends on the vehicle’s intended sales region and that hybrid and electric vehicles may not work with its adapters. This is vendor-specific guidance, not a guarantee for every adapter or vehicle. See OBDLink’s vehicle compatibility guidance, then verify your exact year, make and model with the device maker.
- Confirm the vehicle is OBD-II compliant in its sales region.
- Check which protocols and diagnostic modules the adapter supports.
- Match Bluetooth or USB connectivity to your phone, tablet or computer and its operating system.
- Review the adapter’s voltage rating and wireless-security details.
- For fleet or insurance devices, confirm that the associated service is available to you and understand its data practices.
What a consumer scanner cannot promise
More advanced access does not make a consumer scanner equivalent to manufacturer-level service equipment, and no adapter independently determines every repair. The EPA’s Freedom to Fix page, updated July 1, 2026, says manufacturers must provide emissions-related service information, including OBD data and enhanced diagnostics, along with repair information. That access does not mean every consumer tool implements the same coverage or can diagnose a repair without further checks.
