The best game to play after The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt depends on what you want to carry forward: a sprawling fantasy world, character-led storytelling, meaningful decisions, or a particular kind of role-playing combat. No single pick here reproduces all of The Witcher 3’s mix. The list below is organized by the experience each game offers, not as a universal ranking.
CD PROJEKT RED presents The Witcher 3 as an open-world RPG built around its story, setting, and choices. Its official Complete Edition page says the base game offers over 100 hours of core and side-quest gameplay and that the two expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, add 50 hours. Those are publisher-provided figures, not guaranteed playtimes; your pace and play style will affect how long a playthrough takes.

| Dragon Age: Origins | Mature fantasy storytelling and consequential dialogue | It is a party-based RPG, not an open-world clone. |

The first four recommendations are supported by GamesRadar’s list of games like The Witcher 3 and CD PROJEKT RED’s official description of Cyberpunk 2077. The remaining four are additional genre alternatives: they share selected elements such as exploration, story, fantasy, choices, or role-playing, but none should be read as a verified all-around equivalent.
Best for fantasy exploration
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Choose it if: the part you miss most is setting off in a fantasy world and seeing what lies beyond the next mountain.
#1 Best Overall
- 1205504
- High-quality material
- Durable
- robustness
Skyrim is the clearest pick here for freedom to roam. GamesRadar highlights its magical world, secrets, monsters, and alchemy as reasons it fits alongside The Witcher 3. That makes it an appealing option if you want fantasy atmosphere and open-ended discovery more than Geralt’s tightly authored monster-hunting quests.
Main difference: treat it as a roaming-and-worldbuilding match, not a promise of the same quest structure, narrative focus, or combat feel. Its appeal is that you can shape your own route through the world.
Best for character-led open-world storytelling
Red Dead Redemption 2
Choose it if: you want another richly detailed open world anchored by memorable characters and an emotionally driven story.
GamesRadar points to the game’s character focus, open-world detail, and branching, novel-like narrative. For players whose favorite Witcher moments were about people and relationships as much as the fantasy setting, it offers a strong adjacent experience.
Main difference: there is no dark-fantasy world of monsters and magic. Its setting is a Western landscape, so the connection is storytelling and open-world immersion rather than genre.
Best for mature fantasy and consequential dialogue
Dragon Age: Origins
Choose it if: you want a mature medieval fantasy story, a varied cast, and dialogue decisions that can have major consequences.
GamesRadar describes Dragon Age: Origins as a medieval fantasy RPG with a diverse cast and world-altering dialogue choices. It suits readers drawn to the weight of difficult decisions and to spending time with companions, rather than those looking for an open-world replica.
Main difference: this is a party-based role-playing game with a different structure and combat format from The Witcher 3. Its narrative and decisions are the closer point of comparison, not free-roaming exploration.

Best for another open-world RPG from CD PROJEKT RED
Cyberpunk 2077
Choose it if: you want the studio’s open-world role-playing approach and are happy to leave fantasy behind.
CD PROJEKT RED describes Cyberpunk 2077 as an open-world role-playing game set in a futuristic city and centered on V. That makes it the most direct studio-and-format connection on this list for someone who wants another authored RPG adventure with a broad world to explore.
Main difference: it replaces medieval fantasy with futuristic science fiction. The overlap is the open-world RPG framework, not the setting or tone.
Best for story-focused action RPG exploration
Horizon Zero Dawn
Choose it if: you want a story-led action RPG in a large world, with discovery and combat built around a distinct setting.
The game offers a different kind of world from The Witcher 3: wilderness and science-fiction ideas rather than medieval fantasy. It is a reasonable choice for players who want to investigate a setting and follow a central narrative while playing an action RPG.
Main difference: its identity is rooted in science fiction, not folklore-inspired monster hunting or the choices-and-characters emphasis that defines the closest narrative comparisons above.
Best for grounded medieval role-playing
Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Choose it if: the medieval atmosphere appeals more than the magic, and you want role-playing in a grounded historical setting.

- EXPLORE A MORALLY AMBIGUOUS FANTASY OPEN WORLD: Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth, and complexity. Deal with treasonous generals, devious witches, and corrupt royalty to provide dark and dangerous services. Make choices that go beyond good & evil, and face their far-reaching consequences.
- TRACK DOWN THE CHILD OF PROPHECY: Take on the most important contract of your life: to track down the child of prophecy, the key to saving or destroying this world. In times of war, chase down the child of prophecy, a living weapon foretold by ancient elven legends. Struggle against ferocious rulers, spirits of the wilds, and even a threat from beyond the veil – all hell-bent on controlling this world. Define your destiny in a world that may not be worth saving.
Main difference: it is not a fantasy RPG in the same sense: magic and monsters are not the draw. Pick it for the grounded setting, not as a substitute for Geralt’s supernatural world.

Divinity: Original Sin 2
Choose it if: role-playing depth and tactical battles matter more to you than real-time action.
Divinity: Original Sin 2 offers a party-based fantasy RPG experience, making it a fit for players who want to make decisions, build characters, and think carefully about combat encounters. It emphasizes a different style of play than the action-oriented combat of The Witcher 3.
Main difference: its isometric presentation and turn-based combat change the rhythm of exploration and fighting. Choose it for tactical role-playing rather than a close match in camera, combat, or world structure.
