For U.S. viewers looking to cut another monthly bill, the best free streaming service depends on what you want to watch: choose Tubi for on-demand movie browsing, Pluto TV for channel surfing, or Kanopy and Hoopla if your library or university provides access. “Free” usually means either ad-supported viewing or borrowing through an eligible institution—not an ad-free version of a paid subscription.
How to choose a free streaming service
Start with how you watch. On-demand catalogs are better when you have a particular kind of movie in mind; live-channel guides suit viewers who want to browse and let something play. Then check whether the service is available where you live, whether its free catalog is clearly marked, and whether you qualify for library access.

- Ad-supported: You can watch without a subscription fee, but expect commercial breaks.
- Library- or university-funded: Access depends on an eligible institution and may be subject to borrowing rules.
- Free alongside paid options: Some platforms also show rentals, purchases, subscriptions, or other paid features. Confirm the free label before pressing play.
This is a practical shortlist for U.S. viewers, not a claim that one service is objectively best for everyone. Catalogs, channel lineups, apps, and eligibility can change; confirm current availability for your location and device.

1. Tubi: broad on-demand browsing
Tubi is a good first stop when you want to browse a large mix of movies and TV without paying a subscription fee. Its Help Center says the service is free and legal, requires no credit-card information, and is funded through advertising and studio and independent content partners. It explains: “We stay free by showing short ad breaks during our movies and TV shows.” Tubi Help Center

- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
The trade-off is advertising, and a title you see today may not remain available later. Check the current catalog rather than planning around a movie’s permanent availability.
2. The Roku Channel: live and on-demand in one place
The Roku Channel combines live programming with on-demand viewing. You do not need a Roku device: the service is also available on the web and other supported devices. The Roku Channel

3. Pluto TV: best for channel surfing
Pluto TV presents programming in a guide-style live-channel format, making it useful when you would rather browse what is on than pick a specific movie. The compromise is that channel surfing is not the easiest way to find one exact title. Expect ads, and remember that channel and title availability can differ by region.

6. YouTube Free Movies: familiar, but check the label
YouTube’s free movie selection can be convenient if you already know the interface. Free titles may appear beside rentals, purchases, and user-uploaded videos, so use the clearly labeled free selection and check the viewing terms rather than assuming every result is free or authorized.
7. Kanopy: curated films for eligible viewers
Kanopy is a strong option for viewers interested in curated and educational films, provided their library or university participates. Having a library card by itself is not enough to guarantee access. Your institution determines eligibility and may have its own rules for catalog access.

Hoopla offers a lending catalog for users whose library participates. Check your library’s availability and borrowing rules before relying on it; limits differ by institution.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are free movie websites legal?
Free access does not automatically mean a site is authorized, but Tubi says its service is free and legal and describes its advertising and content-partner model in its official Help Center. On platforms that also host uploads or paid listings, use the clearly identified free catalog and check the terms attached to the specific title.
Do you need a library card to watch free movies?
Not for the ad-supported services in this list. Kanopy and Hoopla are different: they require access through a participating library or university, and simply holding a library card does not ensure that your institution offers either service. Ask your library or university which platforms it supports and what rules apply.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Are free streaming services ad-free?
Not generally. Ad-supported services show commercials in exchange for access without a subscription fee; Tubi explicitly describes short ad breaks during movies and TV shows. Kanopy and Hoopla use institution-based access instead, although availability and usage rules depend on the participating institution.
Can you watch The Roku Channel without a Roku device?
Yes. The Roku Channel is available on the web and other supported devices, so buying a Roku player is not necessary to use it. Check Roku’s service page for access options.
