A reported exchange aboard an IndiGo flight has made VBR Prasad, a 77-year-old Hyderabad resident, an unlikely viral star: he was using ChatGPT to work on a vertical-farming business plan and repeatedly addressed the AI as “sir.” The story is about a planning session and a courteous conversational style—not a confirmed farm launch.
What happened on the IndiGo flight
News reports published October 2, 2026, say Prasad was using ChatGPT during an IndiGo flight to work on an idea for a vertical-farming business. A fellow passenger who posts on X as “teknosaur” noticed the exchange, shared a photograph and described Prasad’s respectful way of addressing the AI. That account comes from news coverage of the passenger’s post, not an independently reported interview with Prasad. Hindustan Times and The Times of India covered the incident.
The passenger’s post reportedly read: “77 year old grandpa on my flight was cooking up a vertical farming business plan w/ ChatGPT until takeoff. and he calls the AI ‘sir’ the respect!!” The Times of India reported that the post had crossed 3 million views as of its October 2 story; that is a time-bound figure reported by the publication, not an audited or current platform total. The Times of India’s report also noted how often Prasad used the honorific.
Why people noticed the “sir” exchange
Hindustan Times reproduced a message attributed to Prasad’s ChatGPT conversation: “Oh wonderful guidance sir. Thanks a lot and I will come back to you sir. Let me download both the files sir.” The Times of India said he used “sir” three times in three sentences. The detail turned an ordinary-looking moment of using an AI tool into a human-interest story about courtesy and curiosity.

The passenger’s reported reaction was: “This man is more locked in than all of us.” In a response on X quoted by Hindustan Times, Prasad said he was “thrilled” by the responses and added, “It’s all in our hands to use the AI for betterment of our lives.” These statements are attributed through the reports; they are not presented as a separately recorded interview. What vertical farming means in this context
Vertical farming can refer to growing plants in stacked or upright arrangements. One accessible approach is hydroponics: growing plants without soil by supplying water and nutrients through a system. How a small NFT setup works
A nutrient film technique (NFT) system typically uses a reservoir, channels or trays, tubing and a pump to circulate a thin flow of nutrient solution past plant roots. Extension notes that NFT kits can be bought or built. This explains the kind of growing method a person might investigate; it does not establish what Prasad’s plan contained. Growing-system design is only one part of a business
A workable growing setup is not by itself a commercial plan. A business would also need to evaluate operating costs, local demand and sales channels, food-safety requirements, location, staffing and the economics of producing crops consistently. The available coverage does not provide those details for Prasad’s idea, nor does it show that he built, funded or opened a farm.

Extension also cautions that systems relying on pumps and other mechanical components are vulnerable to interruptions: a power outage or equipment failure can disrupt plants’ access to water. The reports offer a small, vivid example of an older adult using ChatGPT to think through a business idea. They do not establish a broader trend in older adults’ AI use, and one passenger’s story cannot show whether the idea is commercially viable. Nor do the reports confirm that ChatGPT created the files Prasad mentioned or that he later acted on the suggestions.

What is supported is more modest and more human: according to the coverage, Prasad was exploring an idea, speaking to an AI assistant with unusual formality, and pleased by the public response. His comment about using AI “for betterment of our lives” captures the optimistic framing of the moment without turning a planning conversation into proof of a successful business.
