The fastest way to stretch a Windows 11 laptop’s battery through the workday is to work through the Power & battery page in Settings: review Energy recommendations, pick a more efficient power mode while unplugged, dim and shorten the display, sleep sooner, turn on Energy saver, trim background app activity, and switch off radios you are not using. Each change reduces a specific kind of power draw. None of them guarantees a fixed number of extra hours, because runtime depends on the laptop’s hardware, display, workload, network activity, and the current condition of its battery. Microsoft’s support guidance explains what each setting does but does not publish a general estimate of how much runtime any of them adds on Windows 11.
Before you start: where these settings live
Most of the controls below sit in one place: Settings > System > Power & battery. Windows 11 labels and layouts shift between releases and between manufacturers, so you may see slightly different wording or fewer options than described here. Some PCs also lack certain items entirely, such as adaptive brightness or a refresh-rate picker. Microsoft’s battery guidance separates advice for Windows 11 version 24H2 or later from advice for earlier releases, so if a label does not match, check which version you are running under Settings > System > About.

The seven changes
1. Start with Energy recommendations
Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy recommendations. This page gathers suggestions that affect power use, including brightness and idle behavior. Which items appear depends on the device, its current power state, and the sensors it has. Apply each recommendation on its own merits rather than accepting all of them, because some trade screen quality or responsiveness for savings.

2. Choose a more efficient power mode
Under Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode, select Best power efficiency when you are unplugged and conserving charge matters more than peak speed. Not every PC offers all three modes, and the list can depend on the manufacturer or on a custom power plan you have already set up.

3. Lower display power use
The display is usually the largest single consumer of battery on a laptop. Lower the brightness to the lowest level that stays comfortable in your room. If your screen supports a choice of refresh rate, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and pick a lower rate. A higher refresh rate uses more power, but a lower one can make scrolling and animation look less smooth, so judge the change by how the screen looks to you. Adaptive brightness and content-adaptive controls are available only on some devices, so treat them as optional if you do not see them.
4. Turn the screen off and sleep sooner
Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep (the label may read differently on your version). Set the on-battery display-off and sleep intervals to shorter times, such as five minutes for the screen and a short period for sleep. A laptop that sits idle with the screen on wastes charge; shorter intervals reduce that waste, at the cost of having to sign back in or wake the screen more often.

5. Use Energy saver when it fits
Energy saver can be turned on manually or set to activate automatically at a battery percentage you choose, under Settings > System > Power & battery. According to Microsoft Support, it temporarily turns off or limits power-hungry features such as automatic syncing of mail and calendar and apps you are not actively using. The trade-off is that messages and updates may arrive later and some notifications may be delayed. It works well as a low-battery safeguard, and many people find it less intrusive when set to switch on only near the end of a charge.
6. Find apps that draw power in the background
Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage to see which apps have used the most energy over recent periods. Look for apps you rarely open that still show notable background use. Where Windows offers the control for a given app, you can set it to Power optimized, which lets Windows balance saving power against periodic updates and notifications. Some apps expose no such option, in which case the practical step is to close them or uninstall them if you do not need them. Expect slightly delayed notifications from apps you set to Power optimized.

7. Turn off radios you do not need
If you do not need internet access, Bluetooth, or another wireless connection for the next few hours, turn it off. Use Airplane mode from the Quick Settings panel (press Windows key + A) or switch off the individual connection. Keep whatever you actually need. A paired Bluetooth mouse or a file sync that depends on the network is a good reason to leave that radio on, and disconnecting Wi-Fi will stop cloud-based work until you reconnect.
If the battery still runs out too quickly
If runtime is far shorter than the laptop used to manage, the cause may be age rather than settings. Windows includes a built-in battery report that helps separate usage patterns from declining capacity:

- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run
powercfg /batteryreport. - Note the file location Windows prints, then open the generated HTML file in a browser.
- Review three sections: Installed battery (design capacity compared with full charge capacity), Recent usage (when the laptop ran on battery and how much charge it used), and Battery usage (which apps and components drew power).
A large gap between design capacity and full charge capacity suggests the battery has aged. Treat the report as diagnostic information, not as proof that a replacement is required. Battery capacity declines with age and cycling, and heat and frequent deep discharges speed that decline. Microsoft’s care guidance suggests keeping charge in a moderate range, roughly 20% to 80% when practical, and avoiding high temperatures. You do not need to manage charge percentages on every laptop. Some manufacturers offer a Smart charging feature that limits how full the battery gets; whether it exists, and how it works, depends on the device.
What the battery-life claims in Microsoft’s material do and do not show
Microsoft has published a figure of 36% to 53% longer battery life per charge for browsing in Edge compared with Chrome, Firefox, or Opera. That comparison was described as testing on Windows 10. The passage does not state when the test was run or under what conditions, so it is not a Windows 11 result and does not establish how much any of the seven changes will add. Use your own battery report and a simple before-and-after check on your typical day to judge the difference on your machine.

A practical way to test is to note the battery percentage at the start of a typical work block, apply the changes you chose, and compare the drain over the same kind of work. Keep the workload and screen brightness similar between the two measurements so the comparison means something.
