Then run the Windows 11 audio troubleshooter, inspect the device in Device Manager, and roll back the driver if Windows offers that option. If you need to reinstall it, use the package for your exact PC or sound-card model—not a Realtek driver chosen without checking compatibility.
1. Check the selected output and volume
A changed output selection can look like a driver failure. Select the speaker icon on the taskbar, open the sound output list, and choose the speakers or headphones you intend to use. Check that neither Windows nor the app is muted; open Volume mixer to inspect app-specific volume. Also check that wired headphones or speakers are connected securely.

This is a quick check, not proof that the driver is working. Microsoft’s Windows sound troubleshooting guide covers output selection and volume checks.
2. Run the Windows audio troubleshooter
Microsoft recommends starting with the automated audio troubleshooter in Get Help on Windows 11. Open Get Help, search for audio troubleshooting, and follow the prompts. The troubleshooter can check common settings and device problems and may suggest a fix based on what it finds.

Microsoft’s missing or undetected audio output device guidance also directs Windows 11 users to Get Help.
3. Check whether Device Manager sees the audio device
If Windows has no output device to select, check whether the audio hardware is detected and enabled.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers. Look for the Realtek audio device.
- If the device is disabled, right-click it and choose Enable device, if that option appears.
- If you cannot find it, select View > Show hidden devices, then Action > Scan for hardware changes.
Windows may not detect an audio output device if its driver is missing, outdated, disabled, or failing to load, according to Microsoft’s device-detection guidance. If the device remains absent, note any error code shown in Device Manager before moving on.

4. Roll back the driver if the problem began with the installation
When sound disappeared immediately after a driver change, reverting to the previous installed version is a sensible next step. Rollback is available only when Windows has a previous driver version to restore.
- In Device Manager, right-click the Realtek audio device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Follow the prompts, restart the PC, and test sound.
If the rollback button is unavailable, skip this step; Windows does not have a previous version available through that control. Microsoft’s general audio troubleshooting guide describes driver rollback as an option after an update.
5. Install the driver for your exact PC or sound card
Realtek hardware does not mean every computer should use the same driver package. PC manufacturers may provide model-specific audio drivers, so use the support page for your exact computer or sound-card model and choose the package for your Windows version.

- USB-Powered from USB port of PC or Laptop
- In-line volume control for easy access
- Blue LED lights; metal finish and scratch-free padded base
- Bottom radiator for “springy” bass sound
- Find the PC model in Windows’ system information or on the computer’s label; for a separate sound card, identify its exact model.
- Go to that manufacturer’s official support site and locate the model’s driver downloads.
- Choose the audio driver listed for your Windows version, install it, and restart the PC.
Microsoft’s audio-device guidance advises getting the appropriate driver from the PC or sound-card manufacturer. If you cannot identify the correct package, contact the manufacturer’s support channel rather than guessing.
6. Reinstall the device driver or try Windows’ generic driver
If the correct driver is installed but the device still fails, Windows’ general troubleshooting steps include uninstalling the audio device driver and restarting so Windows can attempt to reinstall it. If that does not restore audio, you can try the generic driver included with Windows. Menu wording may vary slightly by device or Windows build.
- Open Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers, right-click the Realtek device, and choose Uninstall device. Confirm the action if prompted, then restart Windows.
- If sound is still absent, return to Device Manager, right-click the audio device, and select Update driver.
- Select Browse my computer for drivers > Let me pick from a list of available drivers, then try the generic Windows audio driver if it is offered.
- Restart and test the intended output.
Microsoft describes these uninstall, restart, and generic-driver options in its Windows sound troubleshooting guide. If you need to restore the model-specific package afterward, return to the PC or sound-card manufacturer’s support page.

These checks are for quiet playback when the output device is present, not for a device missing from Windows. Open Volume mixer and check the affected app’s level. You can also disable audio enhancements or try a different default audio format in the device’s sound settings. Microsoft’s low or quiet sound guide covers these adjustments.

When to contact the PC manufacturer
If none of the steps restores sound, gather the exact PC model, Windows version and build, Realtek device name and driver version, and any Device Manager error code. Give those details to the manufacturer’s support team or use its model-specific support page to confirm which audio driver is intended for the system.
System Restore is another recovery option described in Microsoft’s general audio guide. It can return Windows system files, settings, and installed programs to the state captured by a restore point, so it has broader effects than changing an audio driver. Consider it only after the targeted driver and device checks, and review Microsoft’s instructions before using it.
