The Instagram ad account not found issue usually isn’t an Instagram problem by itself. In 2024, the error almost always comes from a mismatch between your Instagram presence, your Meta Business setup, and the Ad Account permissions or connection state in Ads Manager.
This guide gives you 7 verified fixes with exact places to check in Meta Business Suite and Ads Manager. If you follow them in order, you’ll resolve the majority of “ad account not found” cases—especially after account moves, role changes, or newly created ad accounts.

What the Instagram Ad Account Not Found error means (2024)
That message typically appears when the ad tooling (Ads Manager, Meta Business Suite, or an integration) can’t retrieve the Ad Account you selected—or your user doesn’t have access to it inside the Business that owns the assets.
#1 Best Overall
In practice, the error often means one of these is true:
- The Ad Account ID you’re trying to use is wrong (common when someone pastes an Instagram Page ID instead of the Ad Account ID).
- Your Facebook/Meta Business account has no access to the Ad Account, or your role doesn’t include permissions required to manage ads.
- The Instagram account isn’t connected to the same Meta Business that has access to the Ad Account.
- The Instagram Page/account and Ad Account live under different Business Portfolios (a frequent cause after mergers, agency handoffs, or employee changes).
- There was a recent change (role, ownership, connection) and the system hasn’t fully reconciled in your browser session.
Prerequisites before you change anything
Before you adjust settings, collect the exact identifiers and access context. It saves time and prevents accidental changes to other ad accounts.
- Have your Ad Account ID ready (it looks like
act_1234567890). - Know which Meta Business Portfolio you’re logged into in Business Settings.
- Confirm you have admin-level or equivalent permission for the Business and ad management in that Business.
- Use a stable browser session (Chrome/Edge). Log out of multiple accounts if you use more than one Meta identity.
7 Verified Fixes For Instagram Ad Account Not Found Issue [2024]
Verify you’re using the right Ad Account ID (not the IG account ID)
Start with the simplest failure: the tool can’t find the Ad Account because the ID is wrong. The most common mix-up is confusing an Instagram/Meta Page identifier with an Ad Account identifier.
Recommended Free Tools
In Ads Manager, open the account selector and confirm the selected account is the one that matches the Ad Account ID format act_. If you’re using an external integration or a partner tool, confirm it expects the Ad Account ID—not the Instagram account handle or Page ID.
Check Business Portfolio access and role for the Ad Account
If you can’t see (or can’t use) the Ad Account inside the Business you’re working in, Meta will surface “not found” instead of a clearer permissions error.

Go to Meta Business Suite → Business Settings and then check Accounts → Ad accounts. Make sure your user or your employee/group is added with an appropriate role (for ad management, you typically need permissions such as Advertiser and/or the ability to manage ads for the Ad Account).
Confirm the Instagram account is properly connected to the same Facebook/Meta Business
Even if you have ad access, your Instagram account must be connected to the same Meta Business (or at least the same Business that owns the configuration used by your Ads Manager workflow).
In Business Settings, check Accounts → Instagram accounts (or Instagram accounts depending on UI). Confirm the Instagram account is listed under the Business Portfolio you’re actively using and that it’s connected to the relevant Page.
Fix ownership mismatch: move the Instagram Page and Ad Account into the same Business
When an agency, contractor, or former employee left, the Instagram Page and Ad Account may remain in different Business Portfolios. That mismatch often triggers the “ad account not found” outcome when you try to run ads from the wrong Business.
Compare where each asset is owned: the Instagram Page (via Accounts → Pages) and the Ad Account (via Accounts → Ad accounts). If they’re under different Businesses, you’ll need to transfer ownership/access so both assets are managed within one Business Portfolio workflow.

If you don’t have admin rights to move assets, ask the Business owner/admin to perform the transfer or grant the right permissions.
Re-authorize Meta accounts in Business Settings when changes were recent
After you change roles, connect an Instagram account, or adjust ownership, the UI can lag in the browser session. Re-authorizing forces Meta to refresh the Business-to-asset relationships.
Go to Business Settings and revisit the connection for the Instagram account and the Ad Account access. If you see options like re-connecting, reconnecting, or refreshing access, complete the flow. Then fully log out and log back into Ads Manager to refresh cached session state.
Remove and re-add people with access to the Ad Account (role refresh)
Sometimes the problem is a stale permission mapping. If your access was granted recently or modified after a role change, the user might still appear “missing” to the ad delivery stack.
In Business Settings → Accounts → Ad accounts, remove the affected user from the Ad Account access and re-add them with the correct role. If you work through a partner or employee group, also verify group membership and the group’s role includes ad management permissions.

Create a new ad set using the same Ad Account, then test with a minimal campaign
When the error shows during selection, you want to confirm it’s not a campaign-specific setting. A minimal test isolates the failure to the Ad Account connection/permissions layer.
In Ads Manager, create a new campaign and choose the same Ad Account. Set a simple configuration (for example, a basic conversion objective if relevant, or traffic/engagement if your workflow uses those). Publish the draft or launch at a tiny budget (when you’re ready), and verify whether the ad account selector loads and the new ad set saves.
If the minimal test works, the original campaign setup may reference an asset (pixel, page, or Instagram placement linkage) tied to the wrong Business/Ad Account.
Common mistakes that keep the error coming back
- Using the wrong ID in integrations. Many tools need
act_Ad Account ID specifically. - Working in the wrong Business Portfolio. People often switch to the personal or a different Business account in another tab.
- Assuming Instagram connection alone is enough. Instagram access doesn’t automatically grant Ad Account permissions.
- Leaving outdated roles after agency/employee changes. Stale user access can trigger “not found.”
- Using a campaign template that references the wrong asset. Pixel, conversion location, or page references can break availability.
- Not refreshing sessions after changes. Meta changes can require logout/login and sometimes browser cache clearing.
Troubleshooting checklist if none of the fixes work
If you’ve run through the 7 fixes and the issue persists, treat it like a diagnostics job. Confirm each layer: identity, Business portfolio, asset linkage, and permissions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Instagram say my ad account is not found even though I can see it in Ads Manager?
This often happens when you’re selecting an Ad Account in one Business context but your Instagram connection (or campaign assets) are tied to a different Business Portfolio. Confirm both the Instagram account and the Ad Account are in the same Business, and re-test with a minimal campaign.
Can I fix this without admin access?
Sometimes. You can refresh sessions, verify you’re using the correct Ad Account ID, and try a minimal new ad set. But if the Ad Account isn’t listed under Accounts → Ad accounts for your Business or your role is missing, you’ll need a Business admin to grant access or move assets.
Is this issue related to Meta pixel, Catalog, or Conversions API?
Not usually for the specific wording “ad account not found.” Pixel or catalog problems typically show as validation or event errors. However, a broken campaign template can reference assets from the wrong Business. The minimal test helps you isolate whether the Ad Account itself is the blocker.
What if the Ad Account is new and I just created it today?
New accounts can take time to fully propagate through Business integrations. Re-check roles in Accounts → Ad accounts, log out/in, and give it a short propagation window before assuming it’s a persistent permission problem.
Bottom Line
The Instagram ad account not found error in 2024 is most often caused by a Business Portfolio mismatch, missing ad permissions, or an incorrect Ad Account identifier. Fix those first, then isolate whether the issue is campaign-specific by testing with a minimal new ad set.
If you want the fastest path to resolution, work through the 7 fixes in order and use the diagnostics checklist if the problem still won’t clear.
