7 Surprisingly Useful Ways People Use ChatGPT, According to Reddit

Reddit users describe ChatGPT doing more than answering questions: it can help reconsider a purchase, make sense of a hiking route, or turn a schedule screenshot into a calendar file. These are reported ideas, not tested recommendations; use extra care when an answer could affect your health, safety, or finances.

Seven ChatGPT workflows Reddit users say they find useful

1. Ask it to challenge a purchase

One Redditor said they upload an item they are considering buying and ask ChatGPT to talk them out of it. A more grounded version is to explain what you already own, what you hope the new item will improve, and ask for reasons to wait. That makes the response a counterpoint to consider, not a substitute for your own research or budget judgment.

2. Check skincare products you already own for ingredient overlap

Instead of asking for another product recommendation, a user described comparing the ingredients in products already on hand. You could provide the ingredient lists and ask which ingredients appear in more than one product. This is only an organizational aid: ChatGPT is not a dermatologist, and ingredient lists alone cannot establish whether a product suits you or is safe for your skin.

3. Explore a hiking route or identify a place

A Reddit example involved sharing a route screenshot and asking about local geology, history, and place names. Another was photographing an unfamiliar building or landscape feature and asking what it might be. Treat an identification as a starting point for further research, not a confirmed fact; image-based guesses can be wrong.

4. Troubleshoot a household appliance

One commenter reported entering a dishwasher error message, uploading a photo, and following the steps ChatGPT suggested. That is an anecdote, not a validated repair procedure. For electrical, gas, or otherwise hazardous work, do not rely on generated instructions in place of a qualified technician.

5. Brainstorm meals from what is in the kitchen

Users described photographing pantry and refrigerator contents to generate recipe ideas, and checking grocery sale ads against prices. A bounded prompt might list the ingredients you can identify, say how much time you have, and ask for a few meal ideas. Verify ingredients, quantities, prices, and any food-safety guidance before acting on the answer.

6. Organize receipts and work hours by project

Another reported workflow is tracking receipts and hours against different projects. You could ask ChatGPT to sort details you provide into a table with columns for date, project, amount, and notes. Review the entries against original receipts and records, especially before using them for billing, reimbursement, or taxes.

7. Turn a schedule screenshot into an ICS calendar file

A commenter described converting a season schedule screenshot into an ICS file that can be imported into a calendar app. The useful part is the conversion from an image to structured events; the risky part is a misread date, time, or location. Check each event against the original schedule before importing or sharing the calendar.

Other reported uses show how varied the input can be

In related Reddit discussions, people also mentioned matching weather with chronic-pain tracking, reviewing website pages for errors, sorting recipe collections, preparing for interviews, and translating photographed pages. These are examples of possible workflows, not evidence that ChatGPT will be accurate or produce a particular outcome for everyone.

Make a useful prompt specific and easy to check

The common thread is starting with something concrete you already have—a label, route, error message, pantry contents, receipt, or screenshot—and asking for a limited task. Say what the material is, what you want done with it, and what format would help. For example: “Here are the ingredients I can read from my pantry photo. Suggest three dinner ideas using these first, and flag anything you cannot identify.”

Before sharing material, consider whether it contains sensitive information. Then decide how much verification the answer needs: a recipe brainstorm is different from a repair instruction, a financial decision, or a health-related suggestion. Check high-consequence details against reliable sources or a qualified professional.

These are anecdotes, not proof of reliability

The examples come from Reddit conversations about useful ChatGPT features and workflows. The feature presenting seven ideas says its writer had not tested every suggestion and cautions that ChatGPT can make mistakes. OpenAI’s 2025 analysis of 1.5 million consumer ChatGPT conversations offers broader context: it estimated that about 30% of usage was work-related and about 70% non-work-related. Researchers used privacy-preserving methods and automated tools to categorize patterns rather than reading the messages; those estimates do not validate any of the individual Reddit examples.
