7 Open-Source Alternatives to ChatGPT You Can Run Locally

Local AI options include desktop chat apps, model runners, and interfaces. See what GPT4All, Jan, Ollama, Open WebUI, and LM Studio do—and what to verify before choosing.

You can run AI chat models on your own computer with tools such as GPT4All, Jan, Ollama, Open WebUI, and LM Studio—but they are not all the same kind of software, and “local” does not guarantee that every feature stays offline. The options below cover desktop chat apps, model runners, and interfaces; check each project’s current license, platform support, hardware requirements, and cloud connections before choosing.

What “ChatGPT alternative” means for local AI

ChatGPT is a hosted service. Local AI setups instead combine a model with software that downloads or runs it and, sometimes, a separate chat interface. A desktop app may bundle much of that workflow; a model runner focuses on executing models; a web interface provides a way to interact with a backend. These roles are related, but they are not interchangeable.

The five options below are supported by the cited project documentation. They are not a performance ranking, and the available evidence does not establish a definitive set of seven products or a best-performing choice. The title’s “open-source” label also needs care: verify the exact release and license before assuming that every project or component qualifies under the definition you use.

Local AI tools to consider

1. GPT4All: desktop chat and local document questions

GPT4All’s documentation covers chatting with downloaded models and using LocalDocs to bring files stored on your computer into chats. That makes it a candidate if you want a desktop workflow that includes local document Q&A, rather than just a model runner. The documentation’s example model, Meta-Llama-3-8B-Instruct.Q4_0.gguf, downloads and loads a 4.66 GB LLM; that is one specific example, not a general size for GPT4All models.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

2. Jan: a desktop app with local models and optional cloud integrations

Jan’s project repository describes it as an open-source alternative to ChatGPT that can run local models. It lists downloads for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and describes a local API as well as optional cloud integrations. Local inference is an available mode; it does not mean every integration or feature is offline. Review the settings and connections you enable if keeping data on-device is important.

Jan publishes platform-specific guidance. Its macOS memory guide gives rough figures of 8 GB for 3B models, 16 GB for 7B models, and 32 GB for 13B models. Treat those as vendor guidance, not guarantees: actual fit depends on model quantization and other settings. Jan’s Windows guide lists Windows 10 or higher, AVX2, 8 GB memory minimum (16 GB recommended), at least 10 GB free storage, and GPU support with at least 6 GB VRAM for NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel Arc. Its Mac guide specifies macOS 13.6 or higher and Apple Silicon, and says Intel Macs are unsupported. These requirements apply to Jan, not to every tool here.

3. Ollama: a local model runner

Open WebUI’s alternatives page identifies Ollama as a local model runner. A runner manages model execution; it is not necessarily a complete, ready-to-use chat interface by itself. If you choose Ollama, check what interface you plan to use with it and confirm the current installation and model requirements on the relevant project pages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Open WebUI: an interface for local model setups

Open WebUI is an interface in this ecosystem. Its alternatives page points readers to Ollama, LM Studio, and Jan as options, illustrating how an interface and a model-running app can fill different roles. The page also notes an Open WebUI license with a branding-preservation requirement for current components. Check the license for the exact component and version before describing it without qualification as open source.

5. LM Studio: a standalone option

Open WebUI’s alternatives page describes LM Studio as a standalone option. The sources cited here do not establish its current license, platform and hardware requirements, or the precise boundaries of its offline and cloud-connected behavior. Confirm those details with LM Studio’s own current project documentation before installing or relying on it for a privacy-sensitive workflow.

Compare tools by role, privacy, and practical fit

  • Role: Decide whether you need a desktop chat app, a model runner, or an interface to connect to a backend. A runner and an interface may be complementary rather than competing choices.
  • Offline behavior: Check what runs locally and whether optional integrations connect to cloud services. Jan documents both local models and cloud integrations, so its local capability should not be read as a guarantee that every feature is offline.
  • Documents: If you want to ask questions about files on your computer, compare that feature separately from ordinary chat. GPT4All documents LocalDocs for local-file use.
  • Compatibility: Use the specific project’s current operating-system and hardware guide. Jan’s published requirements are product-specific; a single RAM or GPU rule cannot reliably describe all the options.
  • License: Verify the license for the exact project, component, and version. Open WebUI’s cited page calls attention to a branding-preservation requirement in its current component licensing.

Plan for model downloads and storage

Local models can take several gigabytes of disk space. GPT4All’s documentation gives a 4.66 GB download-and-load example for one particular model, while Jan recommends at least 10 GB of free storage. These figures describe different products and contexts; check the actual model file size and the app’s current requirements before downloading. An external SSD can be an optional way to add space if your device is short on storage, not a universal requirement.

How to choose

  1. For a desktop chat workflow with local-file Q&A: Start by checking GPT4All’s current Quickstart and LocalDocs documentation.
  2. For a desktop app with local models: Compare Jan’s current downloads and system requirements with your operating system and hardware, and review whether its optional cloud integrations suit your privacy needs.
  3. For a modular setup: Consider a model runner such as Ollama alongside an interface such as Open WebUI, after checking current setup instructions and license terms for both.
  4. For a standalone app: Evaluate LM Studio’s current official documentation for licensing, supported hardware, and network behavior before deciding.

No comparable official benchmarks in the cited sources establish which option is fastest, most capable, or closest to ChatGPT. Choose based on the workflow you need, the models your device can run, and whether the project’s current terms and data handling meet your requirements.
