On an older iPhone, start by checking what is actually using battery, then adjust settings to match your priorities. These seven built-in controls can help you manage battery use, privacy, mobile data and interruptions—but none is a guaranteed speed boost or battery-life fix for every device.
Apple’s menu layout varies by iPhone model and iOS version. If a path below does not match your screen, search for the setting by name in Settings; Apple explains how in its iPhone Settings guide.

1. Battery usage: find what is draining the charge
Before changing background activity or turning off alerts, look at the iPhone’s own usage report. Open Settings > Battery and review battery use by app and system activity. Apple lists background activity, weak cellular signal and notifications among possible contributors to higher battery use; the report helps you decide what to investigate on your device.
If one app stands out, consider whether its background updates, location access or alerts are necessary. A weak signal or frequent notifications may call for a different adjustment. Apple’s guidance on iPhone battery drain and its battery usage and health guide explain what to look for. Avoid disabling features at random: it can reduce functionality without addressing the cause shown on your phone.

2. Battery Health & Charging: check the battery itself
Settings changes cannot restore a battery’s capacity. For iPhone 14 and earlier, Apple’s path is Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. If the Battery Health screen shows Service, Apple says to consider battery service. The exact options and labels can vary across models and iOS versions; search Settings for “Battery Health” if needed. See Apple’s battery guidance for details.
3. Low Power Mode: trade some background activity for a longer charge
Use Low Power Mode when extending the current charge matters more than having every background task run normally. On iPhone 14 and earlier, go to Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode. On later models, the control may appear under a Power Mode submenu; if you do not see it, search Settings for “Low Power Mode.” Apple’s current instructions are in Use Low Power Mode to save battery life.

This is a bundle of trade-offs, not a free performance upgrade. Apple says it reduces background activity and changes settings including Auto-Lock (to 30 seconds), brightness, visual effects, automatic downloads, email fetch and Background App Refresh. It switches off when the iPhone charges to 80% or higher. If a delayed email, download or app update matters, account for those effects while the mode is on.
4. Background App Refresh: keep it where timely updates matter
Review Background App Refresh for apps that do not need to update content while you are not using them. The control’s location can vary by iOS version, so search Settings for “Background App Refresh” rather than relying on a single path. You can make a selective choice based on whether each app needs timely background updates.

Low Power Mode turns Background App Refresh off, and Low Data Mode does too. That relationship does not mean every app should have refresh disabled all the time: limiting it may leave content stale until you open the app.
5. Location Services: choose access app by app
For privacy and to avoid unnecessary location access, review which apps can use your location. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, then select apps individually. Depending on the app and available options, choose access such as always, while using the app, or none. Apple describes these controls in its Location Services privacy guide.

Keep access where location is essential to the app’s purpose. Removing it can limit location-dependent features, and apps that use location in the background may show reminders. The useful adjustment is the least access that still lets the app work as you need—not switching off Location Services wholesale.

Notifications can wake the screen and contribute to battery use. Reduce interruptions by reviewing notification settings for individual apps, while keeping alerts you rely on. Apple includes notifications among possible contributors to battery use in its battery-drain guidance. Treat this as a selective way to reduce unwanted alerts, not a promise of a specific battery-life gain.

7. Low Data Mode: conserve data on a plan or network
Low Data Mode is for conserving network data, not a setting everyone needs to enable for battery reasons. Apple provides separate controls for cellular data and Wi-Fi networks, so apply it to the connection where you need to limit use. Consult Apple’s Low Data Mode instructions for the current path on your device.
The mode reduces background network use: it turns off Background App Refresh and automatic downloads and backups, pauses some iCloud updates, and can lower streaming quality. Those limits can help when data is constrained, but may delay syncing or reduce media quality.
Choose changes by the problem you want to solve
| Setting | Best fit | What may be reduced or delayed | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery usage | Finding the cause of unusual drain | Nothing changes until you adjust a contributing app or behavior | Diagnostic view across apps and system activity |
| Battery Health & Charging | Checking whether battery condition may be involved | No setting changes; a Service notice means consider service | Device battery condition |
| Low Power Mode | Extending the current charge | Background work, fetches, downloads, visual effects and other behaviors | Device-wide mode |
| Background App Refresh | Limiting updates for apps that need not refresh in the background | Timely app content updates | Review the apps that have the control |
| Location Services | Reducing unnecessary app location access | Location-dependent app features | Per app |
| Notifications | Reducing interruptions and unnecessary screen wakes | Alerts you choose to silence | Per app |
| Low Data Mode | Conserving data on a limited connection | Background network activity, some syncing, downloads and streaming quality | Cellular data or an individual Wi-Fi network |
To reverse a change, return to the same control and restore the prior choice. For modes such as Low Power Mode and Low Data Mode, turn the mode off when its trade-off is no longer useful; for app-level controls, re-enable only the access or updates you want.
