For games where music is more than a soundtrack, these seven make rhythm, sound, or performance part of the interaction. They range from beat-timed combat and dungeon crawling to drumming commands and playing a virtual trombone.
How these games use music
The key difference is whether music changes what you do or how the game responds. Some reward actions timed to a beat; others use rhythm as a command system or make musical performance the activity itself. The right pick depends on the genre you want and how much timing precision sounds enjoyable.

Beat-timed action and combat
Hi-Fi RUSH
Hi-Fi RUSH is an action game in which the world and combat move to the music’s beat. Xbox describes it as rhythm-enhanced combat, while emphasizing that action remains at the center. It suits players who want a full action experience with musical timing built into its feel, rather than a game focused only on hitting rhythm prompts. Xbox: Hi-Fi RUSH; Xbox Wire: Hi-Fi RUSH launch.

Metal: Hellsinger puts rhythm into first-person shooting: firing on the beat enhances play, and stronger synchronization makes the music more intense and increases destruction. Choose it if you want the act of keeping time to feed directly into shooter combat. PlayStation: Metal: Hellsinger.

Rhythm-led dungeon play and commands
Crypt of the NecroDancer
This roguelike rhythm game brings rhythmic play into dungeon crawling. It is the clearest fit here if you want a roguelike structure rather than an action shooter, with rhythm shaping how you approach the dungeon. Klei: Crypt of the NecroDancer.
Patapon
Patapon turns drumming into commands for a troop-based strategy game. Its appeal comes from combining rhythmic input with decisions about character development and troop composition. The timing can be demanding: in a 2017 retrospective, producer Hiroyuki Kotani said, “It was well-reviewed, but quite a few people were saying the rhythm for executing ‘miracles’ was too difficult.” PlayStation Blog: How Patapon came to life.

Music-led arcade play and performance
Sayonara Wild Hearts
Sayonara Wild Hearts is a stylized arcade ride built around a custom-written pop soundtrack. Its sequences shift through activities including motorcycles, skateboarding, dance battles, lasers, and swords, making music part of the pace and identity of the experience rather than a single combat-timing mechanic. It’s a good change of pace if you want a musical game that keeps changing its form. PlayStation: Sayonara Wild Hearts; PlayStation: Sayonara Wild Hearts.
Trombone Champ
Trombone Champ makes musical performance the interaction: it is a trombone-based rhythm game that lets players freely play notes. Holy Wow Studios’ official press kit lists more than 70 songs; the page does not state a year for that figure. Pick it if you’d rather perform music directly than fit musical timing into a shooter or dungeon game. Holy Wow Studios: Trombone Champ press kit.
