If a 7 Days to Die dedicated server stops immediately, start with the first error in its console or output log—not the last line. Then verify that the launch command points to the real serverconfig.xml, validate the installation, install missing Windows runtime components, and replace a damaged world file if necessary. Port forwarding and Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) normally matter after the server has started, when players cannot join.

First determine whether the server is failing to start or failing to accept players
These two problems look similar in a browser search but require different fixes. A startup failure means the server process exits, crashes, or never reaches a listening state. A connection failure means the process remains running, but a player cannot see it, connect to it, or stay connected.

Changing gameplay settings in the XML |
A server that is visible in a process list but cannot be reached is not necessarily a failed launch. Keep the diagnosis tied to the symptom so you do not destroy a healthy installation while troubleshooting networking.
Use this order before changing anything
- Stop the server cleanly. Do not edit files while the process is still writing to them. If it is frozen, terminate it and make a backup of the world and configuration files first.
- Capture the first error. Scroll upward from the final shutdown message. The earliest exception, missing-file message, or configuration warning usually identifies the cause; later lines often describe the consequences.
- Confirm the launch command. Check the script, shortcut, service definition, or hosting-panel field that starts the server. The argument must name the actual configuration file.
- Restart after configuration edits.
serverconfig.xmlis read at startup. A file saved while the process is running will not alter that running instance. - Validate or reinstall the server files. Repair the installation before investigating less likely causes.
- Install missing Windows prerequisites. A dedicated-only installation can lack runtime components that the full game installation supplies.
- Check the world or map files. A missing or corrupt world can stop a launch even when the executable itself is intact.
- Only then investigate ports and EAC. These are primarily join and mod-compatibility controls, not first-line startup fixes.
This sequence reflects the most consistent troubleshooting path available for current and older server builds. Error text and defaults can change between game versions, so treat an unfamiliar message as version-specific rather than assuming an old forum fix still applies unchanged.

1. Read the console and output log correctly
Launch the server from its normal script or panel and watch the output from the beginning. If the window disappears, run the same command in a terminal or use the host’s log viewer so the final lines remain available. Locate the first error that appears immediately before the shutdown or crash. Record the complete line, including a file name, path, module, or error code.
Separate the trigger from the aftermath
- A missing configuration warning followed by many secondary warnings points to the launch arguments, not to every warning that follows.
- A file-not-found or deserialization error naming a world suggests a damaged or absent map/save.
- A runtime or library-load error on Windows points toward prerequisites.
- A process that reaches a ready or listening message before players fail to connect has moved past startup; switch to the networking branch.
Do not paste only the last line into a support request. Include the first error and several surrounding lines, plus the game/server build and operating system. Those details distinguish an invalid path from a bad save and a missing runtime.

The dedicated server can be started with a -configfile argument. If the argument is missing, misspelled, or points to a file that does not exist in the process’s working directory, the console may report No server config file loaded. A file named serverconfig.xml somewhere on the computer is not enough; the command must reference the copy the server can actually read.
Check the command and path
- Open the exact launcher used in production: batch file, shell script, shortcut, service unit, or hosting control panel.
- Find the
-configfileoption. Confirm its spelling, capitalization where relevant, and whether it uses a relative or absolute path. - Resolve a relative path from the launcher’s working directory, not from the folder you happen to be viewing. If in doubt, use the full path to the intended XML file.
- Verify that the file is readable and is valid XML. A text editor should show one complete document, not an empty file or an HTML error page saved with an XML extension.
- Start the server and confirm that the console no longer reports that no configuration file was loaded.
Keep one known-good copy of the configuration outside the server folder. That gives you a comparison if a later edit introduces a malformed value. Do not assume a panel’s “configuration” editor and a local serverconfig.xml are the same file; identify which one the launch command actually supplies.
3. Restart after every serverconfig.xml change
The server reads serverconfig.xml during startup, not continuously. Stop the process, save the file, and start it again before judging whether a setting worked. Restarting also prevents an old process from continuing to hold files or ports while you test a new configuration.

A safe edit cycle
- Stop the server and wait until its process has exited.
- Copy the current XML as a dated backup.
- Change one setting or one small group of related settings.
- Check that the XML remains well formed and that the value uses the format expected by the file.
- Start the server and inspect the log for the setting being accepted or rejected.
If a setting appears unchanged, first prove that the correct file was loaded and that a full restart occurred. Editing a second copy of the XML, or restarting only a control panel while the underlying process remains alive, creates the appearance that the server is ignoring a valid change.

When the command is correct but the process still exits, repair the installation before replacing saves or changing network settings. A partial update, interrupted download, or damaged steamapps directory can leave the executable and content out of sync.
Validation with SteamCMD
The commonly cited command is:
steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 294420 validate +quit
The number 294420 is widely described in troubleshooting material as the dedicated-server app ID, but the evidence available for this guide does not independently confirm it against a current official listing. Check the current Valve or game documentation for the correct app ID before running a production repair. Run the command against the installation you actually launch; validating a different folder will not fix the active server.
When validation is not enough
- Stop the server before deleting or replacing files.
- Back up worlds, generated maps, and your configuration first.
- If validation repeatedly fails, remove the damaged
steamappscontent and download a clean server copy, rather than deleting the only copy of your saves. - After reinstalling, restore configuration and worlds one at a time. Start with a fresh test world so you can tell whether the executable works before reintroducing an older save.
A clean test launch is valuable evidence: if a new world starts, the installation and prerequisites are probably functional and the original world or configuration deserves focused attention.
5. Install Windows runtime prerequisites when the process stops immediately
A dedicated-only Windows installation may not include all of the Visual C++ or other runtime components available when the full game is installed on the same machine. One reported failure pattern is a server that opens and stops almost at once; installing the required VC dependencies, or installing the full game on that machine, resolved that case.

How to approach a prerequisite failure
- Use the first log error to confirm that a library or runtime is missing before installing random packages.
- Install the current supported runtime package recommended for your Windows architecture from a trustworthy official source.
- Reboot if the installer requests it, then launch the server from the same script as before.
- If the full game is already installed on that computer, compare the working machine’s installed runtimes with the dedicated host rather than copying DLL files manually.
Do not copy individual DLLs from another computer into the server folder. That can hide the real dependency, create version conflicts, and make future updates harder to diagnose. If the log does not identify a runtime problem, return to the configuration, file-validation, and world checks instead of treating every launch crash as a Windows prerequisite issue.
6. Test for a missing or corrupt map or world
A world file can prevent startup even when the server program and configuration are correct. This is especially likely when the error names a map, save, region, or serialized world object, or when the server worked until a world was copied, renamed, or interrupted during saving.
Preserve the original before testing
- Stop the server completely.
- Copy the entire save/world directory to separate storage.
- Do not overwrite the backup with a test launch.
- Generate or select a new world using the same server installation and configuration.
If the new world starts, the original save is the leading suspect. You can then restore the backup and investigate that world separately, or recover from an earlier known-good copy. If a fresh world also fails at the same point, the cause is more likely the installation, prerequisites, launch command, or another configuration value.
Never delete a world as a first diagnostic step. A reinstall can be repeated; an unbacked-up save may not be recoverable.

7. Check ports and firewall rules only after the server is running
Port forwarding cannot make a crashed process start. Use this branch when the console remains active and local players can confirm that the server has reached its ready state, but remote players cannot connect.

| Traffic | Port guidance commonly cited for this game | Where to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| TCP | 26900 | Host operating-system firewall and router forwarding |
| UDP | 26900 through 26903 | Host operating-system firewall and router forwarding |
| Ports to avoid for this service | 27000 through 27099, because of heavy Steam traffic | Choose a different range unless current documentation says otherwise |
The port list above comes from older hosting guidance and should be checked against the current official server documentation for your build. Apply matching rules on both layers: an operating-system firewall exception without router forwarding will not expose a private host to the internet, and router forwarding without a host rule can still block traffic.
Confirm the network path
- Verify the server is running on the machine that receives the forwarded traffic.
- Confirm that the router forwards to that machine’s current local address, not an old DHCP address.
- Allow the selected TCP and UDP traffic through the operating-system firewall.
- Have a player outside the host’s local network test the connection; a local test can succeed even when internet forwarding is wrong.
- If you changed the server port, update the launch/configuration setting and the forwarding rules together, then restart the server.
Do not interpret a timeout as proof of a startup failure. A running process plus a timeout is a networking problem until the log shows otherwise.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Treat EACEnabled as a mod and join setting
EACEnabled in serverconfig.xml defaults to true according to the cited configuration guidance. Leave it enabled for vanilla play. DLL-based mods commonly require the server to set it to false, and each player must also disable EAC on their side. If the two sides disagree, players can be kicked while joining.
<property name="EACEnabled" value="true"/>
Choose the setting deliberately
- Vanilla server: keep EAC enabled unless a current, specific error directs otherwise.
- Modded server using DLL changes: follow the mod’s compatibility instructions; disabling EAC may be required.
- Players are kicked during connection: compare the server value with the client setting and confirm that everyone is using compatible files.
EAC is mainly about who can join and whether a connection is accepted. Changing it is not a sensible first response to a process that crashes before displaying a ready state. Also understand the security trade-off: disabling an anti-cheat control changes the trust model of the server, so do it only for a controlled group and only when the mod requires it.
Windows, Linux, self-hosted, and rented servers
Windows hosts
Windows troubleshooting commonly centers on missing runtime components, launch shortcuts, and firewall rules. Check the executable’s launch script rather than assuming a graphical shortcut includes the same arguments. If the server stops before loading its configuration, resolve the command and prerequisites before opening ports.
Best Value
Linux hosts
On Linux, use the same diagnostic order: capture the complete terminal or service output, verify the command’s working directory and -configfile path, validate the installation, and test with a new world. A panel or service may run under a different user and working directory from your interactive shell, so a relative path that works manually can fail when started automatically. Check the current Linux guide for build-specific dependencies and service syntax; older instructions may show different error text or defaults.
Self-hosted machines
You are responsible for the files, operating-system firewall, router, updates, backups, and process supervision. Keep a known-good configuration and a separate world backup before each update or mod change. Test a clean world after repairs so you do not confuse a recovered executable with a damaged save.
Rented game servers
A rented host normally handles the physical machine, installation and port forwarding. Use its console and file manager to verify the startup command and configuration path, and open a support ticket with the first error plus the server build. Do not assume the provider’s “restart” button reloads a changed file if an old process is still running; confirm in the console that the process stopped and started again.
Recovery playbooks for common failure patterns
The server never reaches a ready message
- Stop it and save the first error from the log.
- Check
-configfileand confirm the referenced XML exists and is readable. - Validate the installation.
- Install the missing Windows runtime if the error names one.
- Start with a new world if the log points to a map or save.
The server starts, but nobody outside the house can join
- Leave the installation and world untouched.
- Confirm the process remains running and has reached its ready state.
- Apply the documented TCP/UDP rules to both the router and host firewall.
- Test from an external network and verify the forwarded local address.
Only modded players are kicked
- Keep the server running; this is not evidence of a launch crash.
- Compare
EACEnabledon the server with the client setting. - Follow the mod’s required EAC state and ensure every player uses the same compatible mod files.
- Return EAC to enabled for vanilla play.
A clean reinstall works but the old save does not
- Keep the working installation and the original save backup separate.
- Confirm that a fresh world starts repeatedly.
- Restore the old world only after stopping the server.
- If the old world reproduces the crash, use an earlier backup or generate a replacement rather than repeatedly launching against the damaged file.
Prevent the next startup failure
- Back up
serverconfig.xml, worlds, and mod files before updates. - Record the exact launch command and working directory in your administration notes.
- Change one configuration value at a time and restart after each change.
- Keep a clean test world available for distinguishing installation problems from save problems.
- After an update, read the startup log for changed defaults or warnings instead of assuming older settings still apply.
- Document whether the server is vanilla or modded and whether EAC is enabled.
- Recheck current port and app-ID documentation when changing game builds; the figures and error wording in older guides may no longer match.
No reliable published failure-rate statistic was identified for 7 Days to Die servers, so a percentage-based claim about the “most common” cause would be misleading. The practical advantage comes from isolating the failure stage and changing one variable at a time.
The Bottom Line
For a server that will not start, capture the first log error, verify the real -configfile path, restart after edits, validate the installation, install missing Windows prerequisites, and test a fresh world. Reserve port forwarding for a server that is already running but unreachable, and change EAC only when mod compatibility or join kicks require it.
