To run a 7 Days to Die server, install the dedicated-server files with SteamCMD (app ID 294420), launch it once to generate serverconfig.xml, edit that file in a plain-text editor, then forward the game ports to the computer running the server. The dependable core is TCP/UDP 26900 plus UDP 26901 and 26902. You must also allow those ports through the computer’s firewall. A home server is reachable only while that computer is powered on and the server process is running.
Godlike.Host offers hosted 7 Days to Die servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What you need before installing
Choose the machine that will run continuously during play. It needs enough CPU, memory and disk space for the world and connected players, a stable wired or wireless connection, and permission to change the router and operating-system firewall. The exact hardware requirement varies with world size, player count, view distance, mods and how often the world is saved; the setup guides consulted do not provide a single reliable minimum specification.

- A Windows or Linux PC: it can be a spare computer, your gaming PC, or a virtual machine. The server has to remain powered on for players to connect.
- SteamCMD: Valve’s command-line installer downloads and updates dedicated-server files.
- Router access: you need the router’s administrator credentials to create port-forwarding rules.
- Firewall access: Windows Defender Firewall or the Linux firewall must permit the same inbound ports.
- A text editor: use Notepad++, VS Code, or another plain-text editor. Do not use Word or another rich-text editor, which can add formatting and break XML.
The setup guides report that a paid Steam account is not required to download the dedicated server when SteamCMD logs in anonymously. This describes the server installation; it does not change any game-licensing requirements that may apply to people joining your server.

First launch: create and edit serverconfig.xml
Run the dedicated-server executable once before trying to tune the settings. The first start can appear to fail to connect while still creating serverconfig.xml. Stop the process after the file appears, then open it in a plain-text editor.
Settings worth changing first
| Setting | What it controls | Beginner decision |
|---|---|---|
ServerName |
The name shown to people browsing or adding the server. | Use a recognizable name and include a region or play style if that helps friends identify it. |
ServerPort |
The primary listening port. | Leave it at 26900 unless you have a specific conflict; if you change it, update every router and firewall rule to match. |
GameWorld |
The map used when a world is created. | Choose Navezgane for the built-in map or RWG for a randomly generated world. |
MaxPlayerCount |
The maximum number of simultaneous players. | Set a limit your hardware and connection can sustain rather than selecting an arbitrarily large value. |
| Server password | Restricts access to people who know the password. | Set one for a private friends’ world; leave it open only when you intend to accept public players. |
| AdminFile entries | Grants administrator rights to listed SteamIDs. | Add only trusted SteamIDs and keep a private backup of the file. |
Preserve the XML structure: change the value inside the existing setting rather than deleting quotation marks, angle brackets or closing tags. Save a backup before every major change. Most configuration changes take effect after a server restart, and a malformed XML file can prevent startup.
Forward the correct ports
Outside players need a path through both your router and the host computer’s firewall. The consistently reported game ports are TCP and UDP 26900, plus UDP 26901 and 26902. Port 26903 appears in several guides, but its necessity is not consistent across sources, so treat it as a troubleshooting addition rather than an unquestioned requirement.
| Port | Protocol | Purpose and confidence |
|---|---|---|
26900 |
TCP and UDP | Core game port; consistently identified across the available guidance. |
26901 |
UDP | Additional game traffic; consistently included with the core setup. |
26902 |
UDP | Additional game traffic; consistently included with the core setup. |
26903 |
UDP | Listed by some guides, including guidance associated with LiteNetLib, but disputed. Add it if players still cannot connect after the core rules are correct. |
8080 |
TCP | Web-admin access when that feature is enabled; not required for ordinary game connections. |
8081 |
TCP | Telnet or related administration access in some configurations; do not expose it unless you intentionally use that feature. |
Older tutorials that forward 25000-25003 appear to describe an earlier port arrangement. Current guidance centers on 26900. A port-forwarding guide also lists TCP 8080-8081 and UDP 26900-26902 for PC, while another lists UDP 26900-26903; those differences explain why the core set should be tested first and optional administration ports kept closed.

Router forwarding procedure
-
Find the host’s local IP address
On Windows, open Command Prompt and run
ipconfig; note the IPv4 address of the active adapter, often in a range such as192.168.1.xor192.168.0.x. On Linux, use your distribution’s network-status command. Reserve this address in the router’s DHCP settings if possible, so the forwarding rule does not point to a different computer after a reboot. -
Open the router’s administration page
Common gateway addresses are
192.168.1.1and192.168.0.1, although your router may use another address. Sign in, find Port Forwarding, NAT, or Virtual Server, and create a rule aimed at the host’s local IP. -
Create the game rules
Forward TCP
26900and UDP26900,26901and26902to the same local IP. If your router supports a combined TCP/UDP rule, use it for26900; otherwise create separate protocol rules. Add UDP26903only when needed. -
Save and apply
Some routers restart their networking service after applying changes. Wait for that process to finish before testing, and check that the rule still points to the reserved local address.

Allow the ports through the host firewall
Port forwarding alone is not enough. In Windows Defender Firewall, create inbound rules for TCP 26900 and UDP 26900-26902; add UDP 26903 only if your test requires it. On Linux, create equivalent inbound rules in the firewall used by your distribution. Restrict administration ports 8080 and 8081 to trusted addresses or keep them closed when web administration and telnet are disabled.

Start the server and let players connect
Launch the server executable from the installation directory and wait until its console reports that it is listening and has finished loading the world. Keep that window or service running. Players outside your home network should use your public IP address and the server port, normally 26900. Do not give them the private address that begins with 192.168. or a similar local range.
Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot. A connection test performed from inside the same home network can fail because some routers do not support NAT loopback even when outside access works.
Optional unattended launch
Guides commonly suggest launching with -batchmode and -nographics so a machine can run the server without a graphical display. Flag names and supported combinations differ between guides and were not confirmed against current official documentation, so verify them for your installed build before putting the server into an automated task or service. Test a normal interactive launch first, then add one option at a time and keep a known-good startup command.
Home hosting versus a managed server
| Consideration | Home-hosted server | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Reachable only while your computer is powered on, connected and running the server. | Designed to run 24/7 in a provider’s environment. |
| Up-front cost | Uses hardware and electricity you already have; the guides provide no universal cost figure. | Requires a recurring hosting payment; price depends on provider and resources. |
| Network setup | You handle router forwarding, firewall rules and possible carrier-grade NAT limitations. | The provider normally supplies a public endpoint, reducing home-network configuration. |
| Control | Direct access to serverconfig.xml, files and mods. |
Control depends on the provider’s panel, file access and mod support. |
| Latency | Can be excellent for local players; the quality of your home uplink determines remote performance. | Datacenter location may offer more consistent remote latency. |
UPnP or SteamNetworking can provide a fallback when manual forwarding is impossible, but the available guidance warns that this approach can add ping. Manual forwarding is preferable when you control the router and need predictable connectivity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Linux operation and account safety
On Linux, run the server under a dedicated non-login user rather than root. Give that account ownership of the server directory and only the permissions it needs to read, write saves and execute the server. This limits the damage a compromised mod, script or server process could cause. Keep the account’s shell disabled for interactive login if your distribution supports that arrangement, and administer the machine through your normal administrative account.

Troubleshooting checklist
The server starts but no one outside can join
- Confirm the process is listening on the same port shown in
serverconfig.xml. - Verify TCP
26900and UDP26900-26902are forwarded to the host’s current local IP. - Check Windows Defender Firewall or the Linux firewall for matching inbound rules.
- Test from a separate internet connection and give players the public IP, not the private address.
- Ask your internet provider whether you are behind carrier-grade NAT; if so, ordinary inbound forwarding may not work.
- Add UDP
26903as a diagnostic step if the core rules are correct but connections still fail.
The server launches once and then stops
- Open the console output for an error and restore the last known-good configuration backup.
- Check that
serverconfig.xmlremains valid XML and was not saved by a rich-text editor. - Run SteamCMD again with
app_update 294420 validateto repair missing files. - Remove newly added launch flags and confirm the normal interactive launch works before automating it.
Players can connect but administration is unavailable
Game connectivity does not prove that web administration or telnet is enabled. Those features may require TCP 8080 or 8081, their corresponding server settings, and separate firewall rules. Expose these ports only when you need them, and limit access rather than opening them broadly to the internet.
The server disappears after a router reboot
Recheck the host’s local IP. If DHCP assigned a new address, the forwarding rules now target the wrong machine. Reserve the address in the router or assign a carefully managed static address, then retest from outside the network.
Recommended Free Tools
Updating without losing the world
- Stop the server cleanly and wait for the console to finish writing saves.
- Back up the world directory and
serverconfig.xmlto a separate disk. - Run SteamCMD with
app_update 294420 validate. - Start the server interactively and watch for errors before reconnecting players.
- Keep the backup until everyone has confirmed that the updated world loads correctly.
Never assume a game update, mod update or configuration change is reversible. A dated backup gives you a recovery option if a world or extension becomes incompatible.
The Bottom Line
The reliable beginner setup is SteamCMD app 294420, one first launch to generate and edit serverconfig.xml, TCP/UDP 26900 plus UDP 26901-26902 forwarded through both router and firewall, and a host computer that stays online. Add disputed or administration ports only for a demonstrated need, and use a managed server when continuous availability matters more than direct control.
