This dismisses the panel without closing the media app, but it is temporary: playback can make the controls appear again. If the player is stuck after playback ends, try the troubleshooting steps below. There is no universal setting documented by Apple to permanently turn off Now Playing.
First, identify which Lock Screen element you mean
The large media card is the Now Playing player: it shows playback controls for media on your iPhone or on a remote device such as an Apple TV or HomePod. A small widget beneath the Lock Screen clock is a separate, customizable item. If you mean that small widget, edit the Lock Screen and remove the widget; the steps below address the Now Playing player. Apple’s Lock Screen guide describes these features separately.

1. Dismiss Now Playing directly in iOS 27
- Wake your iPhone so the Lock Screen and Now Playing panel are visible.
- Swipe left across the Now Playing panel.
- Tap Clear when it appears.
This is the quickest option when you want the panel out of the way but do not want to close the app. It hides the panel; it does not disable playback controls. Resuming playback or starting another media session can bring the panel back. The Apple Post’s iOS 27 instructions describe this gesture and its temporary effect.

2. If the player remains after playback, check that playback stopped
If a track or video has ended but its controls remain, check the media app or connected device to confirm playback is actually stopped. Then wait a few minutes to see whether the panel clears. This is a troubleshooting suggestion, not a guaranteed countdown; it will not suppress controls while media is actively playing.

3. Force-quit the app that last played media
If playback has stopped but the player looks stuck, force-quit the app that most recently played audio or video, then check the Lock Screen again. This is a troubleshooting step for a lingering interface, not a permanent setting. The exact app-switcher gesture varies by iPhone model.
4. Restart the iPhone
A restart is a reasonable next step if the player appears frozen or remains visible after closing the app. It may clear a temporary interface problem, but it will not prevent Now Playing from returning during future media sessions.

5. Inspect app-specific suggestions and Live Activity settings
If the panel appears unexpectedly after connecting headphones, check the suspected app’s settings for listening or playback suggestions; the available controls and their location can vary by app and iOS version. A troubleshooting guide notes that the suggested Music settings path differs in iOS 27, so follow the labels on your device rather than relying on an older path.

For apps that offer a Live Activities control, Apple documents this path: Settings > Apps > [app] > Live Activities. Not every app has that setting, and Apple does not say that switching it off universally removes the Now Playing player. Treat it as an app-specific control to inspect, not a guaranteed fix. 6. Check the suspected app or Bluetooth connection
If the player keeps returning while the phone is idle, look for a repeatable trigger before making bigger changes. For example, see whether it happens only with one third-party app or when a car stereo or other paired Bluetooth device is connected.
- If one third-party app appears responsible, check for an app update.
- If the issue is tied to Apple Music, check for an iOS update.
- If it occurs only with a particular Bluetooth accessory, test with that accessory disconnected. Unpair it only if the problem persists and you are prepared to set up the connection again.
- Deleting an app is a last resort for a persistent app-specific problem; it can remove the app’s locally stored data and require you to reinstall and sign in again.

What to know on iOS versions other than iOS 27
The swipe-left, then Clear procedure is documented for iOS 27. Apple’s cited iPhone guide explains Now Playing as a media control surface but does not document a universal switch to turn it off. Do not assume the iOS 27 dismissal gesture is available on earlier versions; use the troubleshooting steps if an idle panel appears stuck.
