- Cursor disappears only on certain apps (browser, games, remote desktop): often driver/GPU acceleration or app-specific settings.
- Cursor disappears after a few seconds of idle time: commonly power management or USB sleep behavior.
- Cursor disappears but keyboard still works: pointer-related settings or driver issues are likely.
- Cursor disappears along with touchpad behavior: check both mouse and touchpad drivers (HID, pointing device).
Before you start (quick checks)
Do these fast checks first. They’re low effort and frequently fix “cursor vanishes” cases instantly.
- Unplug and replug the mouse receiver (or switch to a different USB port).
- For wireless mice: replace batteries, then restart Windows 11.
- Check if the cursor returns after you press Alt + Tab or Windows key. If it does, focus on pointer/driver settings rather than hardware.
- Temporarily disable any overlay or remapping tools (for example, mouse macros, RGB software overlays, remote control utilities).
6 Ways To Fix Mouse Cursor Disappears On Windows 11 (2024)
Start with Method 1 and work down. If you find a method that restores the cursor, stop there—there’s no need to change everything.
1) Re-enable the pointer and reset pointer settings
Windows has multiple pointer-related toggles. A small change (or an accessibility feature) can make the cursor effectively “disappear.”

- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices > Mouse.
- Scroll to Additional mouse settings and open it.
- In Mouse Properties, go to the Pointer Options tab.
- Uncheck:
- Hide pointer while typing
- Enhance pointer precision (optional but useful for testing; you can re-enable later if you prefer it)
- Click Apply > OK.
- Move the mouse and type in a text box to confirm the cursor shows up during typing.
2) Fix mouse power-management settings (USB + HID)
If the cursor vanishes after the PC goes idle or after sleep/hibernate, power management is the most common culprit. Windows can temporarily disable the USB/HID device.

- Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices.
- Look for entries that relate to your pointer, often HID-compliant mouse or similar (names can vary).
- Right-click the device > Properties.
- Open the Power Management tab.
- Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
- Click OK.
- Repeat for any related HID/mouse entries you find.
Then also check USB root hubs (common for both wired and wireless receivers):
- In Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- For each USB Root Hub item, open Properties > Power Management.
- Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
- Restart Windows 11 and test.
3) Update or reinstall the mouse driver (including touchpad)
Outdated or corrupted drivers can cause pointer rendering glitches—especially after Windows 11 updates. Reinstalling can reset broken driver components.
- Press Windows + X > Device Manager.
- Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
- Right-click your mouse device > choose Update driver (test first).
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- If Windows finds no updates or the issue remains, reinstall instead:
- Right-click the same device > Uninstall device.
- When prompted, check Attempt to remove the driver for this device if available.
- Restart Windows 11. Plug the mouse back in if it’s removable or wireless.
If your cursor issue involves the touchpad too, also check:
Recommended Free Tools
- In Device Manager, expand Human Interface Devices and Mice and other pointing devices.
- Update/uninstall any pointing devices that match your laptop touchpad or pen input.
4) Roll back or replace the problematic driver
If the cursor started disappearing right after a driver update, rolling back is often the fastest fix. If rollback isn’t available, replace the driver using the manufacturer’s package.

- Open Device Manager (Windows + X).
- Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
- Right-click your mouse > Properties.
- Go to the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver.
- Follow the prompts and restart.
If Roll Back Driver is greyed out:
- Download the latest mouse/touchpad driver from your laptop or mouse manufacturer’s support page (exact model matters).
- Install it and restart.
- If you suspect a very recent change, look for an earlier version from the vendor—then install that version instead.
5) Disable Fast Startup and test clean boot behavior
Fast Startup can cause incomplete driver initialization after shutdown, particularly with USB/HID devices. A clean boot helps identify whether background software is interfering with pointer behavior.
- Press Windows + S, type Control Panel, and open it.
- Go to Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
- Click Choose what the power buttons do.
- Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended).
- Click Save changes.
- Shut down fully (not Restart), then power back on and test.
Then do a clean boot test:
- Press Windows + R, type
msconfig, and press Enter. - On the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services.
- Click Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager.
- Disable non-essential startup items (right-click > Disable).
- Restart and test cursor behavior.
If the cursor stays visible in clean boot, re-enable startup items in small groups to find the specific culprit (commonly mouse remappers, overlay tools, remote apps, or RGB utilities).
6) Repair Windows system files (SFC/DISM) and apply recent updates
When the cursor rendering pipeline gets corrupted (rare, but it happens after failed updates or file damage), Windows system repair tools can bring stability back.
- Press Windows + S, type cmd.
- Right-click Command Prompt > Run as administrator.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Wait for completion and follow any results shown.
- If SFC reports it couldn’t fix everything, run DISM:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Restart Windows 11 after DISM.
Finally, ensure Windows updates are current:
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all updates, then restart.
If the problem began right after a specific update, you may need to uninstall that update and re-test (Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates).

When the cursor still disappears
If none of the six methods fix it, you’re likely dealing with a hardware edge case, a GPU/display driver conflict, or a very specific software hook. Use this targeted checklist.
- Try another mouse (or a cheap wired USB mouse). If it works, the original mouse/receiver is likely the issue.
- Try a different USB port (avoid hubs; try a port on the back of the PC). Also avoid USB 3.0 ports if you suspect interference—test with USB 2.0.
- Check GPU driver: update the graphics driver from NVIDIA/AMD/Intel or your PC OEM, then restart.
- Test in Safe Mode: if the cursor stays visible in Safe Mode, background software or drivers are the likely cause.
- Look for custom cursor software: remove or disable tools that alter cursor rendering (custom cursor utilities, remote desktop cursor modes, screen recording overlays).
- Event Viewer clues: open Event Viewer and check Windows Logs > System for USB/HID/driver warnings around the time the cursor vanished.
Also remember: some “cursor disappearance” reports are actually contrast problems. Windows themes, accessibility contrast settings, or third-party cursor themes can make the pointer hard to see. Test cursor visibility on a plain desktop and in a simple text field.
Final Thoughts
For most people on Windows 11 (2024), the fix comes down to pointer settings, power management, and driver stability. Start with pointer options (Method 1) and power management (Method 2), then move to driver repair (Methods 3 and 4).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you still see issues after updating and reinstalling drivers, run SFC/DISM and confirm Windows updates (Method 6). At that point, your problem is either a device-specific hardware behavior or a deeper software/GPU conflict—and the targeted checklist above will help you narrow it down.

FAQ
Why does my mouse cursor disappear only after sleep or hibernate?
That pattern strongly suggests power management. Method 2 disables Windows’ ability to turn off the HID/USB device to save power.
Will updating Windows fix a disappearing cursor?
It can, especially if the issue was introduced or corrected by a Windows update. Method 6 includes applying the latest Windows updates and repairing system files if needed.
Is it safe to uninstall the mouse driver in Device Manager?
Yes, Windows will typically reinstall a compatible driver on reboot. If possible, keep a keyboard (and ideally a secondary mouse) connected during the test.
My cursor disappears, but it returns when I press keys. What does that mean?
It usually points to pointer rendering timing or “hide pointer while typing” behavior. Method 1 is the best first move.
