For a turn-based RPG with character customisation, the best fit depends on what you want to control: one hero’s identity, a flexible build, a whole adventuring party, or a tactical squad. These six games offer different kinds of freedom rather than one objectively “perfect” system.
How these RPGs differ on character customisation
Customisation is not a single feature. It can mean choosing appearance and identity, building a character’s combat role, shaping dialogue and story, or developing several characters as a team. The games below are ordered to make those differences useful, not to claim a universal winner.

| Game | Best fit | What the available sources establish |

| Divinity: Original Sin 2 | Players who want to shape builds without choosing a conventional class | Race and origin choices, classless character building, and turn-based combat. |

1. Baldur’s Gate 3: customise a hero’s identity and role
Larian Studios’ official overview describes a character creator and turn-based combat. It lists 11 races, 31 subraces, 12 classes, and 46 subclasses. Those figures indicate the breadth of the listed choices; they are not a quality score or a comparison with other games.

The choices connect character identity to the story rather than treating the protagonist as a disconnected combat build. Larian’s support FAQ says a custom character can define race, class, and appearance while remaining connected to the events of the game. The official overview also says the world reacts to how a character develops.
#1 Best Overall
- Chronus Arc - Venture through puzzle-filled dungeons to bring the past to the present!
- Bond of the Skies - A fantasy RPG with a story of friendship between humans and spirits!
- Legend of the Tetrarchs - A fantasy RPG with turn-based battles and dungeons in beautiful pixel art!
- Monochrome Order - Guide the world toward the right direction through Judgments in a fantasy RPG with multiple endings!
- Languages – Subtitles in English and Japanese.
Choose it if you want a custom protagonist and care about both role-playing identity and mechanical role. The available official descriptions support appearance choice, but do not establish a complete comparison of visual options against the other games here.
2. Divinity: Original Sin 2: build freely without a fixed class
Bandai Namco’s page for Divinity: Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition describes race and origin choices, classless character building, and turn-based combat. Its classless approach lets you develop a character through abilities and choices rather than selecting a traditional class as the defining template.

- Uncover a Fascinating Story & Characters - The Empress' plot to destroy the world is complex and layered. Use your wits and recruit powerful allies throughout the world to uncover and undo her multi-faceted web and make your way to the True Ending of this enchanting tale
- Discover a Beautiful World - Climb aboard an airship or boat and traverse this handcrafted, dark fairytale world. From the shining kingdom of Crystallis to the slums of St. Clarity, discover each unique location and shape its future
That freedom is especially appealing if you like combining and adjusting a build as you play. It is not automatically better than a class-based system: players who prefer a clear class identity and its associated structure may find Baldur’s Gate 3 or Solasta a more natural fit.
3. Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous: choose from a huge mechanical menu
The Steam listing for Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous Enhanced Edition describes turn-based combat as an option and lists 25 classes, 12 races, and more than a thousand spells, feats, and abilities. These are figures from the store listing, not an independent count or a measure of how easy the options are to navigate.

- EMBARK ON EPIC ADVENTURES: Compete for the coveted Crown of Command in a magical realm! This Talisman: The Magical Quest Game, 5th Edition offers a thrilling experience, combining strategy and luck
- UPDATED GRAPHICS, COMPONENTS, AND GAMEPLAY: This 5th edition features stunning artwork, redesigned figures, and more streamlined and accessible gameplay that lets both newcomers and fans jump into a game
- 12 DETAILED CHARACTER FIGURES: Play as one of 12 powerful characters, including a Prophetess, Wizard, and Thief. Includes 12 Character figures and matching cards that reveal a character’s unique ability
- FIND THE TALISMAN: Set forth on a dangerous journey—race to be the first to acquire a Talisman, reach the Crown of Command, and vanquish its guardian dragon to win
- TRAVEL THROUGH A MAGICAL LAND: The generously sized board depicts the land of Talisman, 3 regions of enchanted locations. The board changes as players layer on Adventure cards with more places to encounter
Among these six, it is the clearest pick for players who enjoy planning around a large number of mechanical choices. Go in for the build space, rather than assuming that a bigger menu means every choice will suit every play style.
4. Solasta: Crown of the Magister: create the entire party
Tactical Adventures’ game information presents Solasta as a party-focused RPG with a character creation tool and squad-level, turn-based tactical combat. Its character-creation article describes choosing race and subrace, then class and background. Those choices grant features and can shape dialogue.

- EXPANDED TRAVEL AND SOCIAL RULES: Discover new strategy mechanics for journeys in Middle earth and engaging with its iconic characters through the Journey and Council systems.
- COMPREHENSIVE LOREMASTER GUIDANCE: This RPG expansion offers thorough advice on bringing the world of Middle-earth to life, including rules for handling magical treasures, the influence of the Shadow, and the ever-watchful Eye of Mordor.
- DETAILED PATRON PROFILES: Explore in-depth The Lord of the Rings RPG information on 6 notable Patrons, such as Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey, who can sponsor the adventures of the Player-heroes.
- DIVERSE THE ONE RING RPG BESTIARY: Encounter a range of adversaries, from common foes like Orc Soldiers and Highway-robbers to formidable enemies like Cave-trolls and Barrow-wights.
- CREATE YOUR OWN NAMELESS THINGS: Utilize rules to craft unique and mysterious beings from the darkest corners of Middle-earth, adding an element of the unknown to your campaigns.
That makes Solasta a strong match if you want to make a coordinated group of adventurers, rather than concentrate customisation on just one protagonist. The character-creation article dates to 2019, so it supports the underlying system description, not a claim about the current state of every update or option.
5. Wasteland 3: develop a tactical Ranger squad
inXile’s Wasteland 3 page describes a squad-based RPG with tactical turn-based combat. It says dozens of skills, perks, and quirks let players customise a squad of up to six Rangers.

- You do know, there was a period in video game history where we let ourselves take a breather. Contemplate our next move. Use our mind and not our muscles. Let the optional boss think it's gotten the better of us. Not any more!
- Let everyone know the love of turn based role playing video game. Active or passive, you'll take what you can get. Let's fantasize about a future of long battles.
- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
Choose it if you want party-level development in a post-apocalyptic setting rather than a fantasy adventuring party. Its emphasis is on building a tactical team; the available description does not support a detailed comparison of its visual creator with the other games.
6. Fell Seal: Arbiter’s Mark: a tactical RPG with class and ability customisation
A secondary reference describes Fell Seal: Arbiter’s Mark as a turn-based tactical role-playing game with class and ability customisation. That makes it a plausible choice if you want tactical combat and character development through abilities, but the feature description here is less firmly supported than the official or store-page information for the other five titles. Treat this as a general pointer, not a detailed account of the current system.
Which one should you choose?
- For a protagonist with a defined identity and class: Baldur’s Gate 3.
- For classless build development: Divinity: Original Sin 2.
- For the widest listed mechanical menu: Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous.
- For creating a full fantasy party: Solasta: Crown of the Magister.
- For a customizable post-apocalyptic squad: Wasteland 3.
- For a tactical RPG with class and ability customisation: Fell Seal: Arbiter’s Mark.
Visual identity, mechanical freedom, story consequences, and party scope are separate things. The cited sources establish appearance choice for Baldur’s Gate 3 and party creation for Solasta, for example, but they do not provide a complete, current visual-options comparison across all six games. Before buying, check the platform, edition, regional availability, and current store listing for the version you want.
