You can turn a spare desktop or laptop into a home server, but “any old PC” is too broad: the right project depends on its processor, memory, storage, network setup and the work you expect it to do. These six beginner projects range from lightweight DNS filtering to a more demanding photo library, with a backup practice project that helps protect the files you put on the server.
Choose a project that fits the computer and your comfort level
Before installing anything, check the PC’s CPU, RAM, storage health, operating system options and network connection. “Runs” does not necessarily mean “runs well”: a service may be usable for a light workload but struggle with multiple users, video transcoding or a large photo library. The official requirements below are starting points, not performance guarantees; no comparable benchmark, setup-time estimate or idle-power measurement is available for these projects.

| Project | Hardware and workload notes | Network or maintenance considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Pi-hole | Official prerequisites list 512 MB RAM and 2 GB free space; supports x86_64 and is not limited to Raspberry Pi. | Needs a static IP address or DHCP reservation. Network-wide filtering requires changing router or client DNS settings. |
| Home Assistant | Can run on x86-64 hardware as an OS installation, container or virtual machine. Optional radio hardware depends on the smart-home devices and protocols. | Choose an installation route and check device compatibility; a radio dongle is not universally required. |
| Jellyfin | Installation routes exist for common desktop systems, Linux and containers. Jellyfin 10.11 requires SSE4.1 on x86; transcoding can need more compute or hardware acceleration than direct playback. | Playback depends on whether the client can play a file directly or the server must transcode it. |
| Nextcloud | Requires a supported 64-bit stack, database, web server and PHP runtime. Its manual sets 128 MB RAM per process as a minimum and recommends 512 MB; actual needs vary with users, apps, files and activity. | More server components mean more setup and ongoing maintenance than a lightweight DNS service. |
| Immich | Current requirements list 6 GB RAM and 2 CPU cores as minimum; 8 GB and 4 cores are recommended. Quick start requires Docker. Four-GB systems may run with machine-learning features disabled. | Thumbnails and transcoded video add library storage; the documentation says this averages 10–20% beyond original files. |
| Local backup practice | No specific application or hardware minimum is established here. Use the PC or a separate drive to learn scheduled copies and restore checks. | Keep an independent copy away from the machine; one PC or disk is not sufficient protection for irreplaceable data. |
1. Pi-hole: filter DNS requests on your home network
Pi-hole is a reasonable first server project if you are comfortable adjusting DNS settings. It filters requests using DNS-based blocklists, but it should not be treated as a way to block every advertisement or tracking method.
The published prerequisites are modest: 512 MB of RAM and 2 GB of free space, with x86_64 supported. The machine needs a stable address, set either as a static IP or a DHCP reservation. For filtering across the home network, configure your router or individual clients to use Pi-hole for DNS. See the Pi-hole prerequisites and basic installation guidance.

3. Jellyfin: organize and stream a personal media library
Jellyfin offers installation routes for common desktop systems, Linux and containers. The main compatibility check for an older x86 PC is its processor: the Jellyfin project says version 10.11 requires SSE4.1, which it identifies as available in Intel Penryn and later and AMD Bulldozer and later processors. Consult Jellyfin’s installation documentation and hardware-selection guidance.

Direct playback versus transcoding
If a client can play a media file in its existing format, the server can send it directly. If the client cannot handle the file and Jellyfin must convert it while streaming, that is transcoding, which can demand substantially more processing or supported hardware acceleration. A PC that serves files successfully may therefore still struggle when asked to transcode video.
4. Nextcloud: run file storage and sync
Nextcloud is a bigger step than a lightweight network service. The server needs a supported 64-bit software stack, including a database, web server and PHP runtime. Its administration manual gives 128 MB of RAM per process as a minimum and 512 MB as its recommendation, while noting that real memory use depends on users, apps, file count and activity.
Because this is a multi-component server, follow Nextcloud’s current deployment guidance rather than an old tutorial that may describe outdated requirements. The manual lists automated deployment paths including AIO and a community Snap package; see the system requirements and installation guidance.

5. Immich: host a photo library and phone uploads
Immich is intended for a self-hosted photo library and phone uploads, but it is more demanding than the lightest projects here. Its current requirements list a minimum of 6 GB RAM and 2 CPU cores, with 8 GB and 4 cores recommended. The quick start requires Docker; the documentation says a 4 GB system can run with machine-learning features disabled. Check the current requirements and quick start.
Plan for storage beyond the original photos and videos: Immich says thumbnails and transcoded video increase library size by 10–20% on average. This is a working photo library, not a substitute for an independent backup.

- Restore a sample file to a different location and check that it opens correctly.
- Keep another copy separate from the server, such as on a drive stored elsewhere when not in use.
For irreplaceable files, do not rely on a single old PC or one disk. This is practical risk guidance rather than a quantified estimate of hardware failure or a claim that one backup arrangement is ideal.
How to turn an old computer into a home server
- Identify the machine. Find its CPU model, RAM, available storage and supported operating systems. For Jellyfin 10.11, verify SSE4.1; for Immich, compare the machine with the listed memory and core requirements.
- Pick one service and one purpose. Start with a service that matches your comfort level. Pi-hole is light but involves DNS changes; Home Assistant is a natural fit if you want to manage compatible smart-home devices.
- Choose the installation route from official documentation. Home Assistant supports OS, container and virtual-machine approaches; Jellyfin offers routes for desktop systems, Linux and containers; Immich’s quick start requires Docker.
- Prepare reliable storage and a stable network address. Pi-hole specifically needs a static IP or DHCP reservation. For any project holding personal files, check storage condition and decide how you will make a separate copy.
- Test the intended workload locally first. For media, test direct playback and then determine whether your setup needs transcoding. For smart-home control, verify the devices and any radio hardware you plan to use.
- Keep the service maintained and practise recovery. Apply updates using the project’s guidance. Before trusting a server with unique files or photos, make a separate copy and test restoring it.
Which project should a beginner try first?
Try Pi-hole first if you can manage DNS settings and can give it a stable network address. If you would rather avoid changing network-wide DNS, Home Assistant or a local Jellyfin library may be a better first experiment, depending on your devices and processor. Treat Nextcloud and Immich as later steps if you are still learning server maintenance, especially when they will hold files or photos that exist nowhere else.
