If your Gmail signature has an image (logo, banner, headshot) but it shows up blank in outgoing messages, you’re not alone. The issue is usually a settings problem (images disabled), an image-hosting problem (URL not accessible), or a signature-formatting problem (unsupported HTML or broken tags).
This guide gives you six quick, reliable solutions to get signature images displaying consistently, plus the checks that prevent the same failure from coming back.
Why Gmail Signature Images Fail to Show
Gmail will render your signature HTML, but images only display if the image source is accessible and allowed. Common failure points include image URLs that require login, signatures built with unsupported HTML/CSS, images that are blocked by privacy or browser settings, and visibility differences between how Gmail shows messages vs. how recipients’ clients render them.

On top of that, some recipients’ security tools (and Gmail’s own image handling) can suppress remote content depending on the message context.
Before You Start: What to Check First
- Does the image show in drafts or only in the sent email? If it never shows anywhere, focus on signature content and URL accessibility.
- Are you testing with yourself or with another provider? Some issues appear only in Outlook, Yahoo, or certain corporate environments.
- Is the image a link URL or embedded file? Gmail signatures generally work best with a publicly accessible hosted image URL.
Also, note the version you’re using: the Gmail signature editor is available via the web interface (on a browser). The UI differs slightly across devices, so the steps below target Gmail in a browser.

6 Quick Solutions For Gmail Signature Images Not Showing
1) Confirm Images Are Enabled in Gmail
If Gmail is set to block external images, you may see a blank signature when previewing or viewing your own messages. This typically affects how content is fetched and displayed for message bodies.
- Open Gmail in your browser.
- Click the Settings gear icon (top right) → See all settings.
- Go to General → find the section related to Images (wording varies).
- Enable the setting to show images, then Save Changes.
After changing it, send a fresh test email to a separate account and check the sent message there.

Embedded images (like data URIs such as data:image/png;base64,...) are the fastest way to break Gmail signature rendering. Gmail may sanitize or fail to load those blobs depending on how your signature was created.
- Host your image somewhere stable (example: a company website, a static file host, or a CDN).
- Copy the direct image URL that ends in something like
.png,.jpg, or.webp. - In Gmail: Settings → See all settings → General → Signature.
- Edit the signature and paste the image using the editor’s image insertion option (or replace the existing image HTML with a proper
<img src="...">tag). - Save Changes.
Test again by sending a new email (not editing a previously sent draft).
3) Fix Signature HTML by Removing Problematic Styling
Some HTML and CSS that looks fine in an editor can fail in Gmail’s signature sanitizer—especially if you use inline styles, unsupported tags, or complex layouts. A common symptom is that the text shows but the image area is empty.

- In the signature editor, remove any custom HTML around the image.
- Try a minimal image tag (or reinsert the image via the editor).
- Use simple sizing attributes instead of heavy CSS. For example:
<img src="URL" width="120" style="display:block">. - Save the signature and send a test email.
If you used HTML from another source (like a website builder export), rebuild the signature with the simplest possible structure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4) Make Sure the Image Is Publicly Accessible (No Login-Walls)
If your image URL requires authentication (common with some cloud drives), recipients won’t be able to fetch it—so the image won’t render. Gmail can’t load private assets.
- Open the image URL in an incognito window (or from a device not logged into your account).
- If it prompts for a login, the image is not publicly accessible.
- Change permissions on the host so the file is readable by anyone with the link (or make it fully public).
- Use a direct link to the image file, not a viewer page.
- Update the Gmail signature and send a test.
Practical check: if anyone can open the URL in a new browser session and see the image, your recipients likely can too.
5) Rebuild the Signature Using Gmail’s Supported Steps
If your signature has accumulated formatting issues (especially after multiple edits), rebuild it cleanly. This is usually faster than guessing which tag broke the image.
- Go to Settings → See all settings → General.
- In Signature, choose the signature to edit.
- Delete the existing content and start fresh.
- Paste plain text first (name, title, contact info).
- Insert the image using the editor’s image insertion option (or a simple
<img>element if you’re pasting HTML). - Keep it small (commonly 100–300px wide) to avoid scaling quirks.
- Save Changes and send a test email.
If you have multiple signatures (personal vs. work accounts), verify you’re editing the exact one tied to the sending address.

6) Verify Rendering in a Test Email (and Different Clients)
Sometimes the image appears in your preview but not for recipients due to client rendering differences or security filtering. A proper test catches this immediately.
- Send a test email from your Gmail account to at least two destinations (e.g., one Gmail recipient and one non-Gmail like Outlook or iCloud).
- In each recipient mailbox, view the message and check whether the image loads.
- If images are blocked, recipients may need to allow external images for that message.
- Also check mobile vs. desktop—Gmail and iOS mail clients can behave differently when image fetching is restricted.
If the image loads for one client but not another, focus on URL access, file type, and whether the image host uses headers or redirects that some clients reject.
Advanced Troubleshooting When the Fix Doesn’t Work
If all six quick solutions fail, treat it like a pipeline: signature HTML → image URL → HTTP fetch → recipient rendering. Here’s what to try next.
Check the image URL with a real fetch
Open the image URL in an incognito window. If it redirects (e.g., 302) or returns an access-denied page, Gmail can’t reliably render it.
- Look for direct links that end in the image extension (.png/.jpg/.webp).
- Avoid links that point to “preview” pages.
- Avoid short-lived signed URLs (they may expire quickly).
Make sure the image MIME type is correct
Some hosts serve images with incorrect content types or require unusual headers. If you control the host, verify it returns a real image MIME type like image/png or image/jpeg.

Remove redirects and enforce HTTPS
Prefer direct https:// URLs without multiple redirects. If your host supports it, use a stable canonical URL.
Confirm you’re using the signature tied to the correct account
If you have multiple Gmail accounts or “Send mail as” aliases, Gmail can store several signatures. Confirm you updated the one selected under the sender identity.
Common Mistakes That Cause Broken Signature Images
- Using a Google Drive or OneDrive viewer link instead of a direct image URL.
- Forgetting public access, so recipients can’t fetch the image.
- Embedding base64 data inside the signature.
- Over-complex HTML with CSS that Gmail sanitizes away.
- Too-large images that get scaled oddly or fail to render correctly.
- Editing the wrong signature when multiple identities are enabled.
FAQs
Why does my Gmail signature image show in the preview but not after I send?
That usually points to how Gmail renders external content for previews vs. the final saved message—or an image URL that only loads in your logged-in browser session. Re-test with the URL in incognito and resend a fresh message.
Can Gmail signature images be blocked by recipients?
Yes. Many mail clients and corporate security setups block remote images until a user allows them. Even if your signature is correct, recipients may need to enable external images for the message.
What image formats work best for Gmail signatures?
Use PNG or JPG. If you can, WEBP is often smaller and loads quickly, but PNG/JPG are the safest across the widest range of clients.

Will a signature image load if the image URL expires?
No. If the URL is a signed link with an expiration window, recipients who open the message after it expires may see a blank image. Use a stable URL for long-term signature hosting.
How can I tell if the problem is my signature or the image host?
Test the same direct image URL by opening it in an incognito window. If it doesn’t show the image without login, fix hosting first—then rebuild or reinsert the image in Gmail.

Bottom Line
When Gmail signature images not showing, 90% of the time it comes down to one of three things: images are blocked, the image URL isn’t publicly accessible (or is the wrong kind of link), or the signature HTML is too complex or contains unsupported formatting.
Apply the six quick solutions in order—especially switching to a stable hosted image URL and verifying it loads in incognito—and you should get your signature rendering correctly across recipients.
