A machine with a damaged screen may still run a printer; one with a failed motherboard cannot. Diagnose the fault first, then choose a reuse option that fits the components that still work. These are six ideas to consider, not projects every laptop can handle.
Before choosing a project, check what still works
Identify the fault before spending money or opening the case. Check the manufacturer’s troubleshooting and repair information for the exact model. Chromebook owners can also check Google’s model-specific Auto Update Expiration information; Google says Chromebooks released in 2021 or later receive 10 years of updates, while older models have varying schedules.

For a Chromebook, Google offers hardware and system troubleshooting and a manufacturer support directory. For other laptops, use the computer maker’s support resources. If you cannot tell whether a battery is damaged, stop and ask a qualified repair service.
- It still boots and connects to your network: consider a dedicated print or file server.
- The display is broken but the computer works: an external monitor may make it usable, depending on its ports and condition.
- The display panel works but the rest of the machine does not: a monitor conversion may be possible, but it is model-specific.
- It will not power on or has a dangerous battery problem: skip projects that require a working computer; look into repair, parts recovery by a qualified service, or responsible recycling.
Six ways to give an old laptop another use
1. Repair it, then keep using it or pass it on
A straightforward repair may be the most useful option if the laptop is otherwise in good condition. Use model-specific support information to identify the fault, parts, and repair requirements; compare the repair effort and cost with the value of a working device. Some manufacturers provide self-replacement resources. For example, ASUS’s self-replacement information covers tools, parts, and manuals for applicable devices. It does not mean every model is designed for user repair.

If you repair the laptop and no longer need it, consider donation or a local reuse program. Check what condition the recipient accepts before handing it over.
2. Make a working laptop a print server
A laptop that still runs can be dedicated to sharing a printer with other devices on a home or small-office network. The setup depends on its operating system, printer, and network; follow the instructions for those specific products. This is a single-purpose reuse idea, not a fix for a laptop that cannot start or connect.

3. Use it as a small file server
If the laptop can run reliably and connect to your network, it may be used to store or share files. The exact setup depends on the operating system and network configuration. A single old laptop is not a backup plan: keep separate copies of important files, and do not entrust irreplaceable data to aging storage without another copy.

A repair shop, refurbisher, or technically experienced owner may be able to reuse components from a laptop that is not worth repairing as a whole. Whether a part fits another computer depends on its model and specifications. Microsoft’s end-of-life guidance includes refurbishment and parts harvesting as possible routes; broken or unusable components still need appropriate handling.

If you are not confident identifying compatible parts, hand the device to a qualified repair or refurbishment service rather than dismantling it by guesswork.
5. Explore a second-monitor conversion only if the panel is suitable
A working laptop screen can sometimes be reused as a separate display, but the conversion is not universally easy. Compatibility depends on the particular panel and the parts needed to drive it, and accessing the panel can require disassembly. An older Hillsboro High Schools handout hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy mentions the idea, but it is not a model-specific compatibility guide. Identify the panel and find reliable instructions for that exact hardware before buying parts or opening the laptop.

6. Refurbish it for another user or a reuse program
A working laptop—or one that a refurbisher can repair—may be useful to someone else. Ask a local reuse organization or donation program what models, condition, and accessories it accepts. The UK’s IT Reuse for Good Charter guidance, updated 2 October 2026, promotes reuse-first approaches to IT assets and refurbishment. Its policy guidance is UK-specific; elsewhere, check local programs and requirements.
Prepare the laptop safely before handoff or recycling
- Back up files you still need. If the laptop can start, copy accessible files to another secure location before repair, donation, or recycling.
- Sign out of accounts and erase the storage. Use the device’s appropriate reset or secure-erasure process before transferring it. HP’s computer recycling guidance recommends preparing data before recycling. If the data is unusually sensitive, use a suitable professional destruction service rather than improvised drive destruction.
- Check the battery condition. HP says lithium-ion batteries should not go in household trash or curbside recycling. If the battery is swollen, stop using and charging the laptop and take it to a recycler. Do not open or repurpose a swollen battery.
- Confirm the destination’s requirements. Donation, take-back, and recycling options vary by location and by program; ask what it accepts and how to deliver the device safely.
Choose based on the fault, not the laptop’s age
The most suitable route depends on which components work, whether the computer can run supported software, the repair and parts situation, the effort and compatibility a project requires, battery condition, data sensitivity, and local reuse options. The UNEP/Convention technical guideline notes that “The physical life of the equipment is significantly longer than the software.” That is a reason to assess the actual device and its support status—not to assume every old laptop is safe or practical to reuse.
