Slow internet is not always an internet-provider problem. Your broadband service can be working normally while Wi-Fi struggles to reach a device, or while activity inside your home competes for capacity. Start by checking whether the problem affects one device or all of them, then use the tests below to identify which part of the connection is at fault.
What “slow internet” can mean
A Wi-Fi problem is a weak or unreliable wireless link between a device and the router. A broadband problem occurs farther upstream, at the modem, service line, or internet provider. The distinction matters: an extender may help a Wi-Fi dead zone, but it cannot fix an outage or a slow service plan. Ofcom notes that “Your Wi-Fi speed can be affected by your router, your device, distance from the router, walls and interference.” (Ofcom.)

Six overlooked habits that can undermine your connection
1. Hiding the router in a cabinet or behind obstacles
A router needs room to send and receive radio signals. Enclosing it in furniture or putting it beside metal objects can weaken the signal before it reaches your devices. Microsoft identifies router placement and physical obstacles, including metal, as factors that can affect Wi-Fi performance (Microsoft’s home-layout guidance).
Place the router in an open, central location if practical, rather than inside a cabinet or at the far edge of the home. Compare performance from the problem room and from close to the router before deciding that the broadband service itself is slow.

2. Putting the router far from the devices that need it
Distance and walls reduce the quality of a Wi-Fi link. Google says speed can vary with the device, distance, frequency band, and physical barriers (Google Nest Wifi troubleshooting). A device in a distant room can therefore struggle even when a nearby phone works well.
Move the affected device closer to the router for a comparison. If that improves the connection, focus on coverage and placement. A mesh system or extender may help with a coverage dead zone, but neither can raise your plan speed or correct an ISP outage.

- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
3. Letting nearby networks or electronics crowd the signal
Wi-Fi shares radio spectrum with other nearby networks and some household devices. Congestion or interference can make a connection unreliable, especially where many networks are within range. Google and Microsoft both identify interference and the surrounding environment as relevant factors (Google; Microsoft).

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
4. Running several high-demand activities at once
Streams, large downloads, game updates, cloud backups, and background updates can all use network capacity. Several simultaneous high-demand activities are more likely to affect performance than devices loading static pages. Verizon and Ofcom both recommend considering household internet use when diagnosing slow connections (Verizon; Ofcom).
Temporarily pause streaming, large downloads, and updates, then retest the affected device. If performance improves, stagger those activities or check which device or app is using the connection. That result points to competition for capacity, not necessarily a fault in the router.

5. Using a device, band, or configuration that is a poor match
An older device may not support newer Wi-Fi standards, and a device connected on 2.4 GHz may behave differently from one on 5 GHz. Neither band is always best: the right choice depends on the device’s support, its distance from the router, and conditions in the home. Google lists device type, frequency, and distance among factors that can change Wi-Fi speed (Google Nest Wifi troubleshooting).
Recommended Free Tools
Check whether the slowdown affects only one device. On Windows, Microsoft recommends checking signal strength, background apps, adapter power settings, and router firmware as part of Wi-Fi troubleshooting (Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi guide). If you change router settings, use the instructions for your model; avoid changing advanced security or channel options without knowing what they do.

6. Leaving a VPN on or relying on old or faulty equipment
A VPN routes traffic through a VPN server, which can add a slower leg to the connection. If the slowdown happens only while a VPN is enabled, turn it off briefly and compare. ASUS describes VPN routing as a possible reason browsing may slow (ASUS network stability tips). This is a clue to test, not proof that every VPN causes a problem.
Old, misconfigured, or failing network equipment can also be involved. Restarting is a reasonable first check: Ofcom recommends rebooting the router, boosters or mesh units, fibre connection box when present, and client devices (Ofcom). For TP-Link’s setup, its slow-internet guide advises restarting the modem before the router (TP-Link’s slow-internet guide). Follow your own equipment’s instructions, and do not casually factory-reset a router because that can erase its configuration.

- Check the scope. See whether one device or several devices are affected. A single-device problem makes that device’s Wi-Fi support, settings, or background activity worth checking first.
- Compare near and far. Test the affected device near the router and then in its usual location. A strong improvement nearby points toward placement, distance, or barriers.
- Pause heavy activity. Temporarily stop streams, large downloads, and background updates, then test again.
- Restart in the documented order. Restart the router and any modem, fibre box, mesh units, or boosters according to their manufacturers’ instructions.
- Test a wired connection if possible. Connect a computer to the router by Ethernet and compare. If Wi-Fi is slow but wired performance is normal, focus on the wireless link or router’s Wi-Fi. If you can safely connect directly to the modem and the result is similarly slow, TP-Link says the modem or ISP may be responsible rather than the router (TP-Link). Use the modem’s instructions and do not change service or security settings to perform the test.
- Contact your ISP when the evidence points upstream. If a direct wired test is also slow, or the problem recurs across devices despite local checks, ask the provider to check the service and modem.
When buying different equipment makes sense
Try the free diagnostic steps first. A mesh system or extender is worth considering only when the evidence points to weak coverage in part of the home. A router replacement is more defensible when its capabilities, age, configuration, or a suspected failure are implicated. An Ethernet cable is useful for isolating Wi-Fi from broadband or replacing a cable suspected of being faulty; it is not automatically a speed upgrade. None of these purchases can repair an ISP outage or increase the speed included in a service plan.
