Start by checking six iPhone 18 Pro settings: app privacy permissions, the Action button, camera controls, battery options, display and text, and how you launch Camera. They are useful to review, not six universal upgrades—privacy needs, shooting habits, comfort, and battery use differ. Apple’s device material identifies iPhone 18 Pro as a 2026 model, while its relevant guidance spans iOS 26 and iOS 27. Check your installed iOS version and use the labels shown on your phone; menus can vary.
1. Review which apps can access your information
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security and review permissions app by app. Apple provides controls for access to information such as your location, camera, and microphone. Keep access when it enables a feature you actually use; remove it when the access no longer makes sense to you. Apple explains how to control app access to information.

Consider the tradeoff before disabling location access: an app may need it for directions or emergency help. When the camera is active, iPhone shows a green indicator, which can help you notice camera use.
2. Give the Action button a job you will use
Open Settings > Action Button to choose what the button does. Apple documents options including Silent Mode, Focus, Camera, Visual Intelligence, Flashlight, Voice Memo, Recognize Music, Translate, Magnifier, Controls, Shortcut, and Accessibility. Controls, Shortcut, and Accessibility require you to choose a specific option within them. Availability of Apple Intelligence-dependent features may vary by language and region. See Apple’s Action button instructions.

Camera, Flashlight, or a frequently used Shortcut are examples, not default recommendations. Choose the action that saves you the most steps; leave the current assignment alone if it already suits you.
3. Choose how much control you want over the camera
iPhone 18 Pro supports manual aperture, shutter speed, and white balance in Photo, Video, Cinematic, Slo-mo, and Time-Lapse modes. A histogram can help you judge exposure. These controls are useful if you deliberately adjust shots; automatic control is simpler if you prefer to point and shoot. Apple’s manual camera controls guide describes the available adjustments.
Preserve aperture only if you use it
If you regularly set aperture manually, review the camera’s Preserve Settings options so that aperture is retained the next time Camera opens. Otherwise, keep the automatic behavior. The point is to avoid an unwanted reset when you have a repeatable shooting setup—not to add steps to casual photography.

4. Review battery and charging behavior
Go to Settings > Battery to inspect the available charge limit, Optimized Battery Charging, and Power Modes options. Apple’s iPhone guide documents these choices, but it does not establish one ideal charge limit for every owner. Choose based on your charging routine and how much charge you need between outlets; do not expect a particular quantified battery-health improvement from changing a setting. Apple’s battery and charging guide provides further detail.
5. Adjust display and text for your eyes and surroundings
Review brightness, color balance, display duration, text and display adjustments, and Appearance in Settings. Increase text size if reading is uncomfortable; adjust brightness for the place you are using the phone. There is no single brightness level, color balance, or light/dark appearance that is best for everyone. Apple’s display and text settings guide covers the available adjustments.

Choose the launch route that fits the way you take pictures: the Lock Screen, Control Center, Camera Control, or an assigned Action button. Apple documents these options in its guide to opening Camera. If you rarely take pictures from the Lock Screen, a different route may feel more natural; if you need to capture moments quickly, keep a launch method within easy reach.

In the iOS 26 Camera app, Photo and Video are surfaced while other modes are reached by swiping, and camera controls are grouped onscreen. Review the camera’s Preserve Settings choices for options you want to keep between launches, including manual aperture if you use it. If you prefer a fresh, automatic setup each time, leave those settings at their defaults. The exact interface depends on the iOS version installed; Apple’s camera settings guide covers additional controls.

Do you need a new charger?
No charger is required to change these settings. Apple lists Qi2 and MagSafe wireless charging up to 25W for iPhone 18 Pro; MagSafe chargers are sold separately. Treat a compatible charger as an optional accessory, not a battery setting or prerequisite. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro technical specifications list its wireless charging support.
