6 Fixes for Xbox Controller not Recognized in Windows 11

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An Xbox controller that worked yesterday can suddenly stop being recognized in Windows 11 because of a bad USB cable, a drained battery, a Bluetooth pairing issue, a driver glitch, or outdated controller firmware. The fix depends on how you connect it—wired USB, Bluetooth, or the Xbox Wireless Adapter—so it helps to work through the basics before changing system settings.

This guide starts with quick checks like ports, batteries, and connection mode, then moves into safe fixes such as reconnecting the controller, updating or reinstalling drivers, updating firmware through the Xbox Accessories app, running Windows troubleshooters, restarting related services, and clearing conflicting device entries.

If Windows does not recognize the Xbox controller, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan it for a missing or corrupted official driver.

Check the Cable, USB Port, Batteries, and Connection Mode

Before changing drivers or Windows settings, rule out the physical causes that most often make an Xbox controller appear “not recognized” in Windows 11. The controller can connect in three main ways: USB cable, Bluetooth, or the Xbox Wireless Adapter. Each mode has different requirements, so confirm you are testing the right one and avoid mixing methods during troubleshooting. For example, if you are testing a wired connection, disconnect Bluetooth first and plug the controller directly into the PC.

Check a wired USB connection

If you are using a USB cable, make sure it supports data transfer. Some USB-C and micro-USB cables are charge-only, which can power the controller without allowing Windows 11 to detect it as a device. A data cable should make the controller vibrate briefly or light up, and it should appear in Device Manager under a controller, USB, Bluetooth, or Xbox-related category.

  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
  • Use the original Xbox cable if available, or try another known data-capable USB cable.
  • Plug the controller directly into the PC instead of a USB hub, monitor, dock, or front-panel extension.
  • Try a different USB port, preferably a rear motherboard port on a desktop PC.
  • If your PC has both USB-A and USB-C ports, test both with a suitable cable or adapter.
  • Unplug the cable from both ends, wait a few seconds, then reconnect firmly.

Also inspect the controller’s USB port for lint, bent pins, looseness, or dirt. A controller that disconnects when the cable moves may have a worn cable or damaged port. If another USB device works in the same PC port but the controller does not, test the controller on another Windows PC or Xbox console to narrow down whether the issue is with the controller or Windows 11.

Check batteries and power

For Bluetooth or Xbox Wireless Adapter connections, weak batteries can stop pairing or cause the controller to disappear shortly after connecting. Replace disposable batteries with a fresh pair, or fully charge the rechargeable battery pack. If the Xbox button flashes and then turns off, the controller may not have enough power to complete pairing. Remove the batteries for about 30 seconds, reinstall them, and power the controller on again.

Connection type What to check first
USB cable Use a data cable, try another USB port, avoid hubs, and inspect the controller port.
Bluetooth Confirm the controller model supports Bluetooth, charge the batteries, and pair from Windows settings.
Xbox Wireless Adapter Plug the adapter directly into the PC, check its pairing light, and keep the controller nearby.

Confirm the correct connection mode

Not every Xbox controller behaves the same in Windows 11. Xbox Series X|S controllers and later Xbox One controllers support Bluetooth, but some older Xbox One controllers only work wirelessly with the Xbox Wireless Adapter. A quick visual check can help: Bluetooth-capable Xbox One controllers usually have the plastic around the Xbox button integrated into the main faceplate, while older non-Bluetooth models have the Xbox button area as part of the top bumper section.

If you are switching between console, phone, and PC, the controller may still be trying to connect to the last paired device. Turn off nearby Xbox consoles or disable Bluetooth on other devices temporarily. Then hold the controller’s pairing button until the Xbox button flashes rapidly before pairing it with Windows 11. Once these basic checks are complete, you will know whether the problem is likely physical, power-related, or tied to Windows drivers and services.

Reconnect the Controller via Bluetooth or Xbox Wireless Adapter

If the controller powers on but Windows 11 does not detect it, the pairing record may be stale or the controller may still be trying to connect to another device. Reconnecting it cleanly often fixes Xbox controllers that previously worked over Bluetooth or through the Xbox Wireless Adapter. Before starting, keep the controller close to the PC and disconnect it from any Xbox console, phone, tablet, or second computer it may have been paired with recently.

Reconnect over Bluetooth

Most Xbox Wireless Controllers from the Xbox One S generation and newer support Bluetooth, but older Xbox One controllers do not. A quick visual check can help: Bluetooth-capable models usually have the Xbox button set into the same plastic faceplate as the rest of the controller, while older non-Bluetooth models have a separate glossy plastic area around the Xbox button. If your controller supports Bluetooth, remove the old pairing and add it again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Go to Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
  3. Find the Xbox controller, select the three-dot menu, then choose Remove device.
  4. Restart the controller by holding the Xbox button until it turns off, then press it again to turn it back on.
  5. Hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox button flashes rapidly.
  6. In Windows, select Add device > Bluetooth, then choose Xbox Wireless Controller.

After pairing, the Xbox button should stay solid. If Windows asks for a PIN, cancel the pairing, remove the device again, restart Bluetooth from the Settings app, and repeat the pairing process. Xbox controllers should not require a PIN in normal Bluetooth pairing.

Reconnect through the Xbox Wireless Adapter

If you use Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows, the controller does not pair through the regular Bluetooth device list. It uses Xbox Wireless instead, which can offer better stability, headset support on compatible controllers, and lower latency. Make sure the adapter is connected directly to the PC or to a powered USB hub, then pair it again using the physical buttons.

  3. Press and hold the adapter’s Pair button until its light begins flashing.
  4. Turn on the controller with the Xbox button.
  5. Hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox button flashes quickly.
  6. Wait for both lights to become solid, which indicates the connection is established.

If the adapter does not appear to respond, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices and look for an Xbox Wireless Adapter entry. You can also check Device Manager under Network adapters or Universal Serial Bus devices. If it is missing entirely, test the adapter in another USB port before moving on to driver repair.

For users switching between connection modes, remove duplicate controller entries from Windows before pairing again. A controller that is listed once as a Bluetooth device and previously used through the wireless adapter may not automatically choose the connection you expect. Keep only the connection method you plan to use, pair it fresh, then test the controller in Settings > Bluetooth & devices or in a game that supports Xbox input.

Update or Reinstall the Xbox Controller Driver

If Windows 11 detects the controller incorrectly, the issue may be with the installed driver rather than the cable, Bluetooth pairing, or wireless adapter. This is common after a Windows update, a failed device installation, switching between USB and Bluetooth, or using the same controller across mulle PCs. Updating the driver can restore normal input detection, while reinstalling it forces Windows to rebuild the device entry from scratch.

Update the driver in Device Manager

  1. Connect the Xbox controller to the PC using USB, Bluetooth, or the Xbox Wireless Adapter.
  2. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Xbox Peripherals, Human Interface Devices, Bluetooth, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  4. Look for entries such as Xbox Controller, Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Gaming Device, or HID-compliant game controller.
  5. Right-click the controller entry and choose Update driver.
  6. Select Search automatically for drivers, then follow any prompts Windows shows.

If Windows says the best driver is already installed, check the device status before moving on. Double-click the controller entry, open the General tab, and read the message under Device status. Errors such as Code 10, Code 28, Code 43, or This device cannot start usually point to a broken driver installation, a failed USB handshake, or a corrupted device record. In that case, a clean reinstall is more useful than another update attempt.

Reinstall the controller driver

  1. Open Device Manager again.
  2. Find the Xbox controller under Xbox Peripherals, Human Interface Devices, Bluetooth, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  3. Right-click the device and select Uninstall device.
  4. If you see Attempt to remove the driver for this device, leave it unchecked at first unless the controller keeps reinstalling incorrectly.
  5. Select Uninstall.
  6. Disconnect the controller or unplug the Xbox Wireless Adapter.
  7. Restart the PC.
  8. Reconnect the controller and wait for Windows 11 to install it again.

For a wired controller, reconnect it directly to a USB port on the PC rather than through a hub, dock, monitor, or front-panel extension. For Bluetooth, remove the controller from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices before pairing it again. For the Xbox Wireless Adapter, unplug the adapter, restart Windows, plug the adapter back in, and then press the pairing buttons on both the adapter and controller.

You can also verify whether Windows sees the controller as a game input device. Press Windows + R, type joy.cpl, and select OK. If the controller appears in the Game Controllers window, select it and open Properties to test buttons, sticks, and triggers. If it appears in Device Manager but not in this window, continue with firmware updates and Windows updates, since the driver may be present but the input stack may still not be registering the controller correctly.

Update the Controller Firmware with the Xbox Accessories App

If Windows 11 detects your Xbox controller inconsistently, or the controller appears in Device Manager but does not work correctly in games, outdated controller firmware can be the cause. Firmware updates improve USB, Bluetooth, and Xbox Wireless Adapter compatibility, especially after Windows updates or when using newer Xbox Wireless Controllers, Elite Series controllers, or rechargeable battery kits.

The safest way to update the firmware is through Microsoft’s Xbox Accessories app. You can install it from the Microsoft Store if it is not already on your PC. For the most reliable update process, connect the controller with a USB cable instead of Bluetooth. A wired connection reduces the chance of the controller disconnecting while the firmware is being installed.

It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.
  1. Open the Microsoft Store, search for Xbox Accessories, and install or update the app.
  2. Connect the Xbox controller to the PC using a USB-C or micro-USB cable, depending on the controller model.
  3. Launch the Xbox Accessories app.
  4. Select the controller when it appears in the app.
  5. If an update is available, choose Update now and wait for the process to finish.
  6. Do not unplug the controller, close the app, restart the PC, or let the computer sleep during the update.

After the update completes, disconnect and reconnect the controller, then test it in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices or in a game that supports controllers. If you use Bluetooth, remove the controller from Windows first and pair it again after the firmware update. This forces Windows 11 to create a fresh Bluetooth profile for the updated controller.

If the Xbox Accessories app does not detect the controller

  • Try a different USB cable, preferably one that supports data transfer, not just charging.
  • Use a direct USB port on the PC instead of a USB hub, dock, monitor, or front-panel extension.
  • Close Steam, Xbox app, DS4Windows, reWASD, or other controller-mapping tools temporarily.
  • Restart Windows 11, reconnect the controller by USB, and reopen the Xbox Accessories app.
  • If you are using an Xbox Wireless Adapter, unplug the adapter, plug it back in, and pair the controller again before opening the app.

Firmware updates are also useful when the controller connects but shows unusual behavior, such as delayed input, flashing Xbox button lights, random disconnects, headset audio problems, or missing vibration. Once the firmware is current, you can return to your preferred connection method, whether that is USB, Bluetooth, or the Xbox Wireless Adapter.

Run Windows Update and Hardware Troubleshooters

If the controller still is not detected after checking the connection, driver, and firmware, Windows 11 itself may be missing a USB, Bluetooth, chipset, or compatibility update. Xbox controller support depends on several Windows components, including Human Interface Device drivers, Bluetooth radio drivers, USB controller drivers, and Xbox-related device definitions. Running Windows Update can refresh these components without requiring you to manually search for individual packages.

Start with the regular update screen. Press Windows + I to open Settings, then go to Windows Update and click Check for updates. Install everything available, including cumulative updates and security updates, then restart the PC even if Windows does not immediately require it. After restarting, reconnect the controller using your preferred method: USB cable, Bluetooth, or the Xbox Wireless Adapter.

Next, check the optional driver updates. In Settings, open Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates. Expand Driver updates and look for entries related to Bluetooth, Intel, AMD, Realtek, Qualcomm, MediaTek, USB, chipset, or Xbox peripherals. Select relevant updates and install them. This is especially useful if the controller stopped working after a Windows upgrade or if Bluetooth pairing works for other devices but not for the Xbox controller.

Run the built-in troubleshooters

Windows 11 includes troubleshooters that can reset device detection, repair Bluetooth pairing problems, and restart related background components. Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Run Bluetooth if you connect the controller wirelessly through Bluetooth. If your controller is connected by USB or through the Xbox Wireless Adapter, also run troubleshooters related to hardware, devices, or network adapters when available on your PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Bluetooth troubleshooter: Use this when the controller does not appear in the Bluetooth device list, pairs but will not connect, or disconnects shortly after pairing.
  • Network Adapter troubleshooter: Use this if the Xbox Wireless Adapter is not behaving correctly, especially when it appears as a network-related device in Device Manager.
  • Windows Update troubleshooter: Use this when updates fail to download or install, since missing updates can leave older controller support files in place.

If you want to run the classic hardware scan, press Windows + R, type msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic, and press Enter. If the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter opens, click Next and apply any suggested repairs. On some Windows 11 builds, Microsoft hides or retires this older tool, so it may not appear on every system.

After installing updates and running troubleshooters, open Device Manager and select Action > Scan for hardware changes. Then test the controller in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices, or open joy.cpl from the Run dialog to see whether Windows lists the controller under game controllers. If it appears there but not in a specific game, the issue is likely with that game’s input settings or launcher rather than Windows recognition.

Restart Xbox and Bluetooth-Related Windows Services

If Windows 11 still does not recognize your Xbox controller after checking drivers, firmware, and updates, a background service may be stuck. Bluetooth pairing, device discovery, Xbox sign-in components, and accessory communication all depend on Windows services running correctly. Restarting these services is safe, does not delete your games or controller profiles, and can refresh the connection without requiring a full system reset.

Before you begin, disconnect the controller from USB, turn it off, and close the Xbox Accessories app, Steam, DS4Windows, reWASD, or any game launcher that may be using controller input. If you are using Bluetooth, leave Bluetooth enabled in Windows. If you are using the Xbox Wireless Adapter, keep the adapter plugged directly into the PC instead of a hub while restarting services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and select OK.
  2. In the Services window, find Bluetooth Support Service.
  3. Right-click it and choose Restart. If Restart is unavailable, choose Start.
  4. Double-click the service and set Startup type to Automatic or Manual, then select Apply.
  5. Repeat the restart process for Bluetooth User Support Service if it appears in the list.

For Xbox-related components, look for services such as Xbox Accessory Management Service, Xbox Live Auth Manager, Xbox Live Game Save, and Xbox Live Networking Service. Not every Windows 11 PC will show every Xbox service, so do not worry if one is missing. Right-click each available Xbox service and select Start or Restart. If the Xbox Accessories app cannot detect a wired controller, pay particular attention to Xbox Accessory Management Service, since it helps Windows communicate with Xbox accessories.

  • For Bluetooth controllers: restart the Bluetooth services, then go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices, remove the controller, and pair it again using the controller’s pairing button.
  • For USB controllers: restart the Xbox accessory service, reconnect the cable, and check whether the controller appears in Device Manager under Xbox peripherals, Human Interface Devices, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  • For Xbox Wireless Adapter users: restart Xbox services, unplug the adapter for 10 seconds, reconnect it, then press the pairing button on both the adapter and controller.

If a service fails to start, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and repair or reset the Xbox Accessories app if it is installed. You can also restart the PC after changing service states, since some controller-related components reload more cleanly during startup. After the reboot, test the controller in Set up USB game controllers: press Windows + R, type joy.cpl, and select OK. If the controller appears there and responds to button presses, Windows recognizes it properly, even if a specific game still needs its input settings adjusted.

Remove Conflicting Devices or Reset the Controller Connection

If Windows 11 still does not recognize your Xbox controller after checking drivers, firmware, updates, and services, the problem may be a stale pairing record or a conflict with another input device. Windows can keep old Bluetooth, USB, or Xbox Wireless Adapter entries even after a controller has been disconnected, paired to another device, or updated. Removing those entries forces Windows to create a fresh connection profile the next time you pair or plug in the controller.

Remove old controller entries from Windows

Start by disconnecting the controller from the PC. If it is wired, unplug the USB cable. If it uses Bluetooth or the Xbox Wireless Adapter, turn the controller off by holding the Xbox button for several seconds. Then remove the device from Windows settings:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings and go to Bluetooth & devices.
  2. Select Devices and look for entries such as Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Controller, or duplicate game controller listings.
  3. Click the three-dot menu next to each old or duplicate controller entry and choose Remove device.
  4. If you use the Xbox Wireless Adapter, remove any old adapter-related controller entries as well, but do not remove unrelated keyboards, mice, or headsets unless you know they are causing conflicts.
  5. Restart the PC before reconnecting the controller.

You can also check classic Device Manager for hidden or duplicate controller records. Right-click Start, open Device Manager, then choose View > Show hidden devices. Expand Bluetooth, Human Interface Devices, Sound, video and game controllers, and Xbox Peripherals if present. If you see greyed-out Xbox controller entries or mulle copies of the same controller, right-click the stale entries and select Uninstall device. Avoid uninstalling core Bluetooth adapters, USB controllers, or system devices unless you are certain what they are.

Check for conflicting controller software and devices

Third-party controller tools can interfere with detection, especially if they create virtual gamepads. Apps such as controller remappers, emulator input layers, virtual joystick utilities, and older gamepad drivers may cause Windows or a game to detect the wrong device first. Temporarily close or uninstall tools that create virtual controllers, then reconnect the Xbox controller. You can also press Win + R, type joy.cpl, and press Enter to open the Game Controllers panel. If several controllers appear, select the Xbox controller and choose Properties to confirm that button presses and stick movement are detected.

If the controller was recently paired with a console, phone, tablet, Steam Deck, or another PC, reset its connection state before pairing it again with Windows 11. Turn on the controller, then hold the small Pair button on the top edge until the Xbox button flashes rapidly. For Bluetooth, return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Bluetooth and select the controller when it appears. For the Xbox Wireless Adapter, press the adapter’s button first, then press and hold the controller’s Pair button until both lights stabilize.

For a wired reset, shut down the PC completely, unplug the controller, and disconnect other nonessential USB gaming devices such as racing wheels, arcade sticks, flight sticks, and extra gamepads. Start Windows with only the Xbox controller connected directly to a rear motherboard USB port on a desktop or a built-in USB port on a laptop. Once Windows recognizes it, reconnect other accessories one at a time. This helps identify whether the controller itself was failing or another device was taking priority, loading a conflicting driver, or confusing input detection in Windows 11.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Xbox controller vibrate or light up but still not appear in Windows 11?

This usually means the controller is getting power but Windows is not detecting it as an input device. Try a different USB data cable, not a charge-only cable, and plug it directly into a rear USB port on the PC if possible. If it still does not appear, check Device Manager under Xbox Peripherals, Human Interface Devices, and Bluetooth for a failed or unknown device.

Should I use Bluetooth or the Xbox Wireless Adapter on Windows 11?

The Xbox Wireless Adapter is usually more reliable for gaming because it supports the controller’s native wireless connection, lower latency, and accessories such as headsets on supported controllers. Bluetooth is convenient and works without an adapter, but it can be affected by pairing conflicts, older Bluetooth drivers, or interference. If your controller keeps disconnecting over Bluetooth, removing the pairing and using the Xbox Wireless Adapter is often the better fix.

How do I know if the problem is the controller or Windows 11?

Test the controller on another device, such as an Xbox console, another Windows PC, or a phone via Bluetooth if the model supports it. If it works elsewhere, the issue is likely with Windows drivers, Bluetooth, USB ports, or conflicting devices on your PC. If it is not detected anywhere, update the firmware using the Xbox Accessories app if possible or try a full reset by removing batteries, unplugging USB, and reconnecting after a minute.

What should I do if the Xbox controller shows in Device Manager but does not work in games?

Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices and remove duplicate or old controller entries, then reconnect the controller. In Steam, check Controller settings because Steam Input can sometimes override how games detect Xbox controllers. You can also uninstall the controller from Device Manager and restart Windows so it reinstalls a clean driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Windows Update fix an Xbox controller that is not recognized?

Yes, Windows Update can install newer USB, Bluetooth, chipset, and Xbox controller-related drivers that affect detection. After checking the main Windows Update page, open Advanced options > Optional updates and look for driver updates from Microsoft, Intel, AMD, Realtek, or your PC manufacturer. Restart after installing them, then reconnect the controller using only one connection mode at a time.

Bottom Line

If your Xbox controller is not recognized in Windows 11, start with the simple checks first: swap the cable or USB port, confirm Bluetooth pairing, reseat the wireless adapter, and restart both the controller and PC. These quick steps often fix connection glitches without deeper changes.

If the problem continues, update the controller firmware, refresh or reinstall the drivers, check Xbox-related services, and apply Windows updates. Work through the fixes in order, then test the controller in Xbox Accessories or a game after each step to identify what solved it.
