6 Dunning Tools for Stripe SaaS: Pricing, Features, and What’s Actually Comparable

Six dunning options for Stripe SaaS use very different pricing models. Compare the published costs, eligibility, recovery workflows, and limits before adding a tool.

For a Stripe SaaS business, the right dunning tool depends on what Stripe Billing already handles and what still fails: retries, customer reminders, card updates, authorization recovery, or cancellation saves. The six options here span native Stripe Billing, fixed-fee tools, an eligible free tier, an analytics add-on, and revenue-share pricing. Public prices show a genuine range of models, but they do not prove that any particular price band is “nobody’s” territory.

Start by checking what Stripe Billing already does

Stripe Billing provides a baseline that includes Smart Retries, failed-payment reminders, hosted recovery links, automatic card updates, and configurable recovery automations. Stripe says Smart Retries have helped businesses recover 57% of recurring payments that originally failed; that is Stripe’s own reported average, not a guaranteed outcome or a result directly comparable with another vendor’s claims. Before paying for another service, identify which native features are enabled and what problem remains. A tool that adds an in-app payment wall or cancellation flow may solve a different problem from one that changes retry timing or attempts to improve payment approvals.

Six options, six different pricing and product shapes

The figures below come from Stripe’s pricing page or a vendor-authored comparison published by Churn Buster. The latter says competitor details reflect vendor-published information as of September 2026; verify current prices, limits, and eligibility directly before making a purchasing decision. A listed software fee is not necessarily the total cost of Stripe payment processing or other billing services.

Tool What it covers Public price evidence Important qualification
Stripe Billing Smart Retries, reminder emails, hosted recovery pages, expired-card updates, recovery automations, and cancellation surveys. Pay as you go at 0.7% of Billing volume, or an annual contract with monthly pricing starting at $620/month. Stripe’s pricing page says pay-as-you-go scope includes transactions processed on and off Stripe and excludes one-off invoices. Distinguish Billing fees from payment-processing fees. Stripe pricing
Churn Buster Dedicated dunning and cancellation flows, including email and SMS; the comparison describes adaptive campaigns and Stripe do-not-retry handling. $269/month for Dunning or Cancel Flows; $430/month for both, up to $150,000 MRR. Prices and limit are reported in Churn Buster’s comparison; confirm the live plan and included services. Churn Buster comparison
Churnkey SaaS-focused payment recovery and cancellation flows, including recovery email sequences and an in-app payment wall. Starter: $250/month billed annually or $300/month billed monthly, for under $5,000 monthly churn volume. The price and churn-volume threshold are reported in the comparison; confirm current limits and tier features. Churn Buster comparison
Chargebee Retention Cancellation flows, offers, and exit surveys. The comparison says payment retries and dunning emails are handled in Chargebee Billing. Free Starter tier for Chargebee Billing customers; custom pricing above that. The free tier is conditional on using Chargebee Billing, not a general free option. Churn Buster comparison
Baremetrics Recover Recovery add-on with email, SMS, and in-app banners or paywalls, according to the comparison. Recover at $129/month, on top of a Baremetrics plan starting at $49/month. The comparison notes that pricing presentation varies by page or plan; confirm the applicable package. Churn Buster comparison
Butter Payments Payment-side recovery; its outreach product is described as email, SMS, and AI voice. Revenue share on recovered invoices; an exact amount was not published in the comparison. Ask for the share, attribution rules, and baseline used to define recovery before comparing it with subscription fees. Churn Buster comparison

What the apparent price range does—and does not—show

These public offers range from Stripe’s percentage-of-Billing-volume model to an eligibility-limited free Chargebee tier, fixed monthly products, a Baremetrics add-on that requires a base plan, and Butter Payments’ unquoted share of recovered invoices. The cited fixed-fee examples are $250–$430 per month for Churnkey and Churn Buster, while Baremetrics Recover is reported at $129 per month plus its starting analytics subscription.

That is evidence of varied pricing approaches and published price points, not proof that no vendor covers a particular lower-price band. It also does not establish demand for such a band. A low monthly fee alone is not a useful comparison if the tool’s recovery scope, volume limit, billing-platform fit, or measurement rules differ.

Choose by workflow, not by the word “dunning”

“Dunning” can refer to several distinct jobs. Map the failure you want to address before comparing products:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Retry timing: Does the tool control the retry schedule, or does Stripe Billing or another billing platform remain responsible?
  • Customer communication: Do you need email, SMS, a hosted card-update flow, or an in-app payment wall?
  • Payment-side recovery: Is the product trying to improve payment approvals or handle invoice recovery beyond customer reminders?
  • Cancellation prevention: Do you need cancellation flows, offers, or exit surveys as well as payment recovery?
  • Platform compatibility: Confirm support for Stripe and any other billing or subscription systems you use.
  • Measurement and operations: Ask how the vendor defines recovered payments, updated cards, retries, cancellations, and passive churn; also clarify who configures campaigns and prevents duplicate retries or messages.

The Churn Buster comparison describes different measurement and retry-coordination details for some products, but it does not provide a common measurement method across all six. Confirm each vendor’s definitions and responsibilities in your own setup.

Estimate whether another tool can pay for itself

There is no universal break-even price: expected value depends on your failed-payment volume, the share a tool can recover beyond your existing setup, the gross margin on retained revenue, and the vendor’s fee and attribution method. Use your own data rather than a vendor-wide recovery percentage.

  1. Measure failed recurring payments over a representative period and separate recoverable payment failures from cancellations or disputes.
  2. Record what your current Stripe setup recovers, including retries, card updates, and customer-initiated updates.
  3. Ask the vendor to define incremental recovery and how it attributes a recovered invoice to the product.
  4. Estimate incremental retained gross margin, then compare it with the full incremental cost: subscription or revenue share, any required base plan, and relevant billing fees.
  5. Agree on a measurement window and review the result against your existing baseline before expanding usage.

Why recovery-rate claims are not a six-way ranking

Stripe’s 57% figure is a company-reported average for recurring payments that originally failed. The reviewed public comparison does not provide a controlled, standardized recovery-rate test across Stripe Billing, Churn Buster, Churnkey, Chargebee Retention, Baremetrics Recover, and Butter Payments. Differences in customer mix, retry ownership, attribution, and definitions make headline percentages unsuitable for a like-for-like ranking.

Churn Buster’s comparison reproduces a testimonial attributed to John O’Nolan, Founder & CEO of Ghost.org: “After almost 5 years using Churn Buster, we tested the latest Smart Dunning features from our subscription platform and saw a notable drop in performance. Switched back with renewed confidence.” This is a vendor-published customer testimonial, not an independently audited comparison.

A practical shortlist

  • Stay with Stripe Billing first if your main need is native retries, reminders, hosted recovery, and automatic card updates, and you have not yet measured the remaining gap.
  • Look at dedicated flat-fee tools if you need added dunning or cancellation workflows and your volume and budget fit their current limits.
  • Consider Chargebee Retention only in light of its Chargebee Billing eligibility and the fact that the comparison places payment retries and dunning emails in Billing.
  • Assess Baremetrics Recover as a bundle, including the required analytics subscription rather than the add-on price alone.
  • Request a written quote from Butter Payments that spells out revenue share, attribution, and the invoices counted as recovered.
