n8n can run almost anywhere Docker, Node.js, or a small VPS is available, which makes free hosting tempting for builders who want to automate workflows without paying upfront. The challenge is that “free” can mean very different things: a limited managed cloud trial, a sleeping container, a capped developer platform, or a VPS credit that eventually expires. Antihost is listed first here as a self-managed Linux VPS option for installing n8n yourself; its VPS has a 14-day free trial, not a permanent free tier.
The best free n8n host depends on how you plan to use it. Lightweight personal automations may work fine on a developer platform with occasional downtime, while webhook-heavy workflows, scheduled jobs, and production integrations usually need persistent storage, reliable uptime, and enough memory to avoid failed executions.

This comparison focuses on practical tradeoffs for April 2026, including deployment difficulty, data persistence, scaling options, resource limits, and the hidden caveats that matter most for n8n. The goal is to help you choose a free or free-tier provider that fits your current workload without creating migration problems later.
What to Look for in Free n8n Hosting
Free n8n hosting can work well for learning, prototyping, personal automations, and low-volume internal workflows, but the details matter. n8n is a long-running automation service with a web UI, webhook endpoints, credentials storage, execution history, and often a database behind it. A free host that is fine for a static site or short-lived demo app may be frustrating for n8n if it sleeps aggressively, wipes storage, blocks inbound webhooks, or cannot keep environment variables secure.
#1 Best Overall
- Complete 4-column magnetic Kanban board kit: flex dry-erase board plus 64 magnetic Agile cards and accessories — a full board system, not a cards-only pack.
- 64 magnetic cards included: task, detail, blocker, and blank headline cards so you can run To Do / Doing / Done / custom workflows and wipe cards clean for reuse.
- Thin, light flex board (about 6 lb) with strong magnetism: hang with included hardware/adhesive or move between rooms without a bulky framed panel.
- Customize all four column headlines with blank magnetic header cards; write on the board and on the cards with the included markers.
- Built for small teams and project planning: clearer than sticky notes, ready for standups, Scrum, or personal Kanban on wall or table.
Core criteria to compare
- Runtime limits: Check whether the free plan supports always-on services or whether apps sleep after inactivity. Sleeping can break scheduled workflows and delay webhook-triggered automations.
- Persistent storage: n8n needs durable storage for workflows, credentials, settings, and execution data. Prefer a managed PostgreSQL option or attachable persistent volume over ephemeral container storage.
- Database support: SQLite can be acceptable for testing, but PostgreSQL is better for reliability, backups, and future migration. Confirm whether the free tier includes a database or requires a separate service.
- Webhook availability: If you use Stripe, GitHub, Slack, forms, CRMs, or custom callbacks, the provider must expose a stable public URL and allow inbound HTTPS traffic.
- Resource allowance: Look at RAM, CPU, execution time, and monthly usage hours. n8n can run on modest resources, but memory pressure appears quickly with heavy workflows, large payloads, browser-based nodes, or many concurrent executions.
- Secrets management: The host should support environment variables and private configuration values, including N8N_ENCRYPTION_KEY, database credentials, webhook URL settings, and authentication options.
Persistence is one of the biggest differences between free providers. Some platforms redeploy containers from scratch and discard local files, which is risky if n8n is using SQLite or storing binary data on disk. For a safer setup, use PostgreSQL for n8n data and, if your workflows handle files, configure external storage such as S3-compatible object storage where possible. Also make sure you set a fixed encryption key before creating credentials; changing or losing it can make stored credentials unreadable.
Operational factors that affect day-to-day use
Deployment complexity varies widely. Managed n8n services are easiest but rarely offer generous free tiers. VPS providers give you the most control, usually through Docker Compose, but require you to handle updates, SSL, firewall rules, backups, and monitoring. Container platforms sit in the middle: they can deploy the official n8n image quickly, but you still need to wire up environment variables, a database, and volume persistence. Developer platforms can be convenient for experiments, although sleep policies and limited background processing may be a poor match for production workflows.
| Factor | What to verify | Impact on n8n |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep policy | Always-on vs. idle shutdown | Affects schedules, webhooks, and response time |
| Storage | Persistent disk or external database | Protects workflows, credentials, and execution history |
| Public URL | Stable HTTPS endpoint | Required for reliable webhook integrations |
| Resource limits | RAM, CPU, hours, bandwidth | Determines workflow size and concurrency |
| Maintenance | Managed updates vs. self-managed Docker | Controls how much admin work you take on |
Security should also influence your choice. Even for free hosting, enable n8n authentication, use HTTPS, restrict editor access, and avoid placing sensitive workflows on platforms with unclear data retention policies. If the provider has no backup feature, export workflows regularly and keep a copy of critical environment variables. The best free option is not simply the one with the largest quota; it is the one whose limits match your trigger types, data sensitivity, uptime needs, and willingness to manage infrastructure.
Best Free n8n Hosting Providers in April 2026
The best free n8n host depends on whether you want a managed experience, a full VPS, or a lightweight container platform. n8n needs a long-running process, persistent storage for credentials and workflow state, environment variables, HTTPS, and ideally a PostgreSQL database for anything beyond testing. Free plans can work well for prototypes, personal automations, and low-volume internal workflows, but they often come with sleep policies, limited RAM, bandwidth caps, or no durability guarantees.
1. Antihost: Linux VPS for self-hosted n8n
Antihost offers a self-managed Linux VPS for installing n8n yourself; it is a VPS option, not a free-tier n8n host. Its VPS runs on AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D with NVMe storage and full root access, and is available in USA East, the Netherlands, and Ukraine. The VPS has a 14-day free trial. Install n8n manually rather than using the one-click template.
2. Render
Render is one of the easier developer-platform options for running n8n from a Docker image or Git repository. Its free web services are convenient for quick trials because deployment, HTTPS, logs, and environment variables are handled in the dashboard. The main tradeoff is that free services may sleep after inactivity and free persistent disks are not typically part of the web-service allowance, so production n8n setups usually need an external database and careful handling of encryption keys. Render is a good fit for demos, webhook testing, and learning n8n deployment without managing a server.
3. Railway
Railway offers a smooth container deployment flow and is popular for n8n because it makes environment variables, service networking, and database add-ons straightforward. Its free or trial-style credits can be enough for short-term experimentation, but always check the current credit, usage, and sleep policies before relying on it. Railway is strongest when you want to spin up n8n with PostgreSQL quickly, test workflows, and later move to a paid usage-based plan if the project becomes active.
Recommended Free Tools
4. Fly.io
Fly.io is a strong option for users comfortable with CLI-based deployments and containers. It can run n8n close to users in selected regions and supports persistent volumes, which is useful if you are keeping local SQLite data or n8n files. The free allowance is typically resource-constrained, so you should size the machine carefully and avoid memory-heavy executions. Fly.io is best for technical users who want more control than a platform-as-a-service dashboard provides, while still avoiding full VPS administration.

5. Oracle Cloud Free Tier
Oracle Cloud Free Tier is one of the most capable free VPS-style options when capacity is available. Its Always Free compute resources can run Docker, n8n, PostgreSQL, Caddy or Nginx, and backup scripts on the same instance. This makes it suitable for a more durable personal automation server, especially if you want full control over storage and networking. The tradeoff is setup complexity: you are responsible for firewall rules, updates, SSL configuration, database maintenance, and recovery planning.
6. Google Cloud Free Tier
Google Cloud can host n8n on a small Compute Engine instance within free-tier constraints in eligible regions, though limits and qualifying machine types must be checked carefully. It is a good choice if you already use Google Cloud services or want a predictable path to paid infrastructure later. For n8n, you will usually deploy Docker on a VM, attach persistent disk storage, and configure HTTPS with a reverse proxy. It is more work than Render or Railway, but offers better server-level control.
- Antihost is listed first as a self-managed Linux VPS option; install n8n yourself, and note that its 14-day VPS trial is not a permanent free tier.
- Choose Render for a simple app-platform deployment and fast testing.
- Choose Railway when you want quick n8n plus database setup with a clear upgrade path.
- Choose Fly.io if you are comfortable with containers and want persistent volumes with regional control.
- Choose Oracle Cloud or Google Cloud when you want a free VPS-style setup and can manage Linux, Docker, backups, and security yourself.
Side-by-Side Comparison of Free Plans, Limits, and Tradeoffs
The best free n8n host depends less on raw CPU and more on whether the platform can keep n8n running with persistent storage, background workers, and reliable webhook URLs. n8n is stateful: it needs a database, encryption key, environment variables, and stable storage for credentials and execution data. A free container that sleeps after inactivity may be fine for testing, but it can break production automations that depend on instant webhook delivery or scheduled triggers.
| Provider | Free option | Persistence | Deployment complexity | Focus | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Antihost VPS | 14-day free trial (VPS) | NVMe storage | Self-managed | Self-hosted n8n on a Linux VPS | n8n must be installed manually; server administration is self-managed |
| Oracle Cloud Always Free | Always Free VM resources, often used with Docker Compose | Strong, if using attached boot/block storage | Medium | Long-running self-hosted n8n with PostgreSQL on a VPS | Requires server administration, firewall setup, backups, and patching |
| Fly.io | Free allowances or low-usage credits depending on account and region | Good when paired with a Fly Volume or external database | Medium | Container-based n8n close to users, with custom domains and HTTPS | Volumes are regional, and usage beyond allowances can create charges |
| Render | Free web service tier for lightweight apps | Limited on free web services unless external storage/database is used | Low | Quick demos, learning n8n, and temporary workflow experiments | Free services may sleep, which is poor for real-time webhooks |
| Google Cloud Run | Generous free tier for request-driven containers | Stateless by default; needs Cloud SQL, external Postgres, or another database | Medium to high | Webhook-heavy workloads that can tolerate container cold starts | Scheduled workflows and always-on behavior need careful configuration |
| Railway | Trial credits or free developer allowances where available | Good when using Railway PostgreSQL or an external database | Low | Fast setup for developers who want Git-based deploys and managed services | Free availability and credit rules can change, so it is not ideal for permanent no-cost hosting |
Among the no-cost options, Oracle Cloud Always Free is usually the strongest choice because n8n can run like it would on any small VPS: Docker, PostgreSQL, persistent disk, reverse proxy, and a fixed domain. The tradeoff is operational work. You are responsible for OS updates, database backups, TLS renewal, monitoring, and restoring the instance if something fails.
For the easiest developer experience, Render and Railway are faster to start with because they hide most infrastructure details. They are suitable for testing nodes, building proof-of-concept automations, or hosting low-volume workflows. The catch is that free app platforms commonly enforce sleep, memory caps, build-minute limits, or changing credit policies. If an n8n workflow must receive webhooks from Stripe, GitHub, Slack, Shopify, or a CRM at any time, sleeping containers can cause missed or delayed executions.
Fly.io and Google Cloud Run sit in the middle. They give more control than one-click platforms but still avoid managing a traditional VPS. Fly.io is better when you want an always-running container with a small persistent volume. Cloud Run is better for request-driven workloads, but n8n’s scheduler, queue mode, and background execution model require extra care. In most free deployments, use PostgreSQL instead of SQLite, set a fixed N8N_ENCRYPTION_KEY, configure a stable public WEBHOOK_URL, and keep execution history trimmed so storage limits do not become the first bottleneck.
How to Deploy n8n on a Free Hosting Provider
Deploying n8n on a free hosting provider usually follows one of three paths: a managed one-click template, a Docker-based container deployment, or a manual VPS setup. The best route depends on how much control you need. A managed or template-based deployment is fastest, while a VPS gives you more flexibility for persistent storage, custom domains, queues, and database tuning.

- N8N_ENCRYPTION_KEY: keeps credentials decryptable across restarts and redeploys.
- N8N_HOST: the public hostname for the n8n editor.
- N8N_PROTOCOL: usually https on modern platforms.
- WEBHOOK_URL: the external URL used by triggers and third-party services.
- DB_TYPE and database variables: required when using PostgreSQL instead of SQLite.
2. Choose a deployment method
On container platforms such as Render, Railway-style services, Fly.io, or similar developer hosts, create a new web service from the official n8n Docker image. Set the container port to n8n’s default port, add the environment variables, attach a persistent volume if available, and deploy. If the free plan does not include persistent disks, pair the deployment with an external PostgreSQL database so workflow data survives rebuilds.
On a free VPS, install Docker and Docker Compose, then run n8n as a container behind a reverse proxy such as Caddy, Traefik, or Nginx. This approach takes longer to configure but gives you better control over storage, updates, firewall rules, backups, and background worker processes. It is also the better option if you plan to add Redis for queue mode later.
3. Connect a domain and enable HTTPS
Most free developer platforms provide a temporary HTTPS subdomain, which is enough for testing. For production-like workflows, connect a custom domain so webhook URLs remain stable if you move providers. After DNS is configured, update WEBHOOK_URL and related host settings to match the final domain. Then test a webhook trigger from an external service, not just from inside the n8n editor.
4. Verify persistence, restarts, and workflow execution
After the first deployment, create a simple workflow with a manual trigger, a webhook trigger, and one credential-based integration. Restart or redeploy the service, then confirm that workflows, credentials, executions, and webhook URLs still work. This step catches the most common free-hosting problem: the app appears to run, but data disappears when the container is rebuilt.
- Create or connect a PostgreSQL database if persistent local storage is unavailable.
- Set a fixed encryption key before adding credentials.
- Deploy the n8n container or VPS service.
- Configure the public URL and HTTPS domain.
- Run test workflows and trigger webhooks externally.
- Check logs after sleep, restart, or redeploy events.
For free hosting, keep the first deployment simple: one n8n instance, one database, one stable domain, and a small set of workflows. Once execution volume grows, move scheduled jobs, long-running automations, or business-critical webhooks to a paid plan with predictable uptime, more memory, persistent storage, and fewer sleep or usage restrictions.
Common Limitations of Free n8n Hosting
Free n8n hosting is useful for learning the platform, testing automations, and running a few low-volume workflows, but it usually comes with constraints that matter quickly in production. n8n is a long-running application that benefits from persistent storage, reliable background execution, stable webhooks, and enough memory for workflow bursts. Many free plans are designed for demos, static apps, or short-lived developer projects, so the fit depends on how your workflows behave.
Resource limits and sleeping apps
The most common restriction is limited CPU, RAM, and monthly compute hours. If a provider pauses inactive services, your n8n instance may sleep until the next request wakes it. That can delay webhook responses, break time-sensitive automations, or cause third-party services to retry and fail. Low-memory containers can also crash when workflows process large payloads, handle many executions at once, or run complex JavaScript nodes.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Sleeping instances: incoming webhooks may be delayed or unavailable while the app restarts.
- CPU throttling: large workflows, data transformations, and API-heavy jobs may run slowly.
- Memory caps: executions that handle files, arrays, or many items can exceed the free allowance.
- Monthly quotas: free compute hours, bandwidth, or build minutes can run out before the month ends.
Persistence, databases, and file storage
n8n needs durable storage for credentials, workflow definitions, execution history, and settings. Some free container platforms use ephemeral filesystems, which means data stored inside the container can disappear after redeploys or restarts. For anything beyond experimentation, use PostgreSQL or another supported external database where possible, and confirm whether the provider’s free database tier includes backups, sufficient storage, and stable connection limits.

File handling is another frequent weak spot. Workflows that download attachments, generate reports, or pass binary data between nodes may need persistent disk space or object storage. Free tiers often provide very small volumes, temporary disks, or no mounted storage at all. If your automations depend on files, consider using external services such as S3-compatible storage, Google Drive, or another durable file destination instead of relying on local container storage.
Webhook reliability, networking, and security constraints
n8n workflows often depend on public webhook URLs, OAuth callbacks, and outbound API calls. Free hosting can introduce friction here: domains may change, custom domains may require a paid plan, HTTPS may be limited, or cold starts may cause callback timeouts. Some platforms also restrict outbound ports, block long-running connections, or impose bandwidth limits that affect high-frequency integrations.
- Webhook URLs: changing hostnames can require updating integrations in Stripe, GitHub, Slack, or other services.
- OAuth callbacks: providers may reject callback URLs if your free domain changes or lacks proper HTTPS.
- Execution history: storage limits can force shorter retention or manual cleanup.
- Secrets management: environment variables may be supported, but advanced secret rotation can be paid-only.
Operational overhead and support
Free self-hosting usually means you are responsible for updates, backups, environment variables, database migrations, reverse proxy settings, and recovery after failed deploys. Managed n8n cloud removes much of that work, but free trials expire and are not the same as permanent free hosting. Developer platforms and free VPS providers can be generous, yet they still require monitoring so you know when workflows stop executing, queues back up, or storage fills.

For business workflows that send invoices, sync customer records, process leads, or alert teams, free hosting should be treated as a test environment or a temporary starting point. Once uptime, data retention, or predictable execution matters, a paid plan with persistent infrastructure, backups, and clear resource guarantees is usually the safer path.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to Upgrade From Free n8n Hosting
Free n8n hosting is best for learning, prototyping, personal automations, and low-volume internal workflows. Once n8n becomes part of a real business process, the cost of downtime, missed executions, or lost workflow history usually becomes higher than the cost of a small paid server or managed plan. Upgrade when your workflows need predictable uptime, stable storage, better performance, or operational controls that free tiers do not provide.
Upgrade when reliability matters
If a workflow sends customer emails, syncs CRM records, processes orders, updates invoices, posts alerts, or handles support tickets, it should not depend on a platform that may sleep, restart, throttle, or reclaim resources. Free developer platforms are especially risky for scheduled automations because background workers may pause after inactivity or exceed monthly compute quotas. A paid VPS, managed n8n plan, or production container host gives you more consistent execution and fewer surprises.
- Your workflows run on a schedule: Cron-based jobs need an always-on instance, not a service that sleeps between requests.
- You use webhooks in production: Missed inbound webhooks from Stripe, Shopify, GitHub, Slack, or form tools can break downstream processes.
- You need queue mode: Higher-volume setups often need Redis, workers, and a separate database, which rarely fit well on free plans.
- You need backups: Workflow definitions, credentials, execution logs, and database state should be recoverable.
Upgrade when persistence and data safety become non-negotiable
Many free hosting options rely on ephemeral filesystems, limited volumes, or hobby databases with restricted storage. That may be acceptable for testing, but it is not ideal for production n8n because credentials, workflow state, binary data, and execution history need durable storage. If you are still using SQLite on a temporary disk, or if your provider can wipe storage when the instance is rebuilt, move to a paid setup with PostgreSQL, persistent volumes, automated backups, and a clear restore process.
Security is another strong signal. Teams should upgrade when they need single sign-on, stronger access controls, private networking, auditability, secrets management, IP allowlists, or stricter control over where data is processed. Even if the workflows are simple, connecting n8n to Gmail, databases, payment tools, cloud storage, and internal APIs means the instance holds sensitive credentials. A paid environment usually makes it easier to isolate n8n, patch the server, enforce HTTPS, and monitor access.

Upgrade when limits slow down your work
Free tiers often include small CPU allocations, low memory, limited build minutes, bandwidth caps, database size limits, and restrictions on always-on services. You should upgrade if workflows time out, executions queue for too long, large API responses fail, browser-based nodes consume too much memory, or binary file handling becomes unreliable. The same applies if you spend more time working around free-tier constraints than building automations.
| Signal | Better paid option |
|---|---|
| Personal workflows are becoming business-critical | Managed n8n or a small production VPS |
| Frequent webhook traffic or scheduled jobs | Always-on container hosting or VPS |
| Large execution history or binary data | PostgreSQL plus persistent object storage |
| Multiple users editing workflows | Managed n8n with team features or a hardened self-hosted setup |
| High execution volume | Queue mode with separate workers, Redis, and scaling controls |
For many users, the first paid step does not need to be expensive. A modest VPS with Docker, PostgreSQL, backups, and monitoring can be enough for small teams. Choose managed n8n if you prefer not to maintain servers, upgrades, SSL certificates, and database recovery yourself. Stay on free hosting only while failures are acceptable, data can be recreated, and workflow volume remains comfortably below the provider’s limits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I host n8n for free without losing my workflows?
Yes, but only if the provider gives you persistent storage or you connect n8n to an external database such as PostgreSQL. Many free container and app platforms use ephemeral filesystems, which means workflows, credentials, and execution history can disappear after a restart or redeploy if you rely on local SQLite storage. For anything beyond testing, choose a setup with persistent volumes, managed PostgreSQL, or regular backups.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Which free n8n hosting option is best for beginners?
A managed or template-based platform is usually easiest because it avoids manual Docker, reverse proxy, SSL, and database setup. Services that let you deploy from a GitHub repo or one-click template are better for first-time users than a raw VPS. The tradeoff is that free managed tiers often have stricter sleep, CPU, memory, or runtime limits.
Will n8n work properly on a free plan that sleeps after inactivity?
It can work for manual testing and occasional webhook use, but sleeping apps are unreliable for scheduled workflows, polling triggers, and time-sensitive automations. If the instance is asleep when a cron job or webhook should run, the workflow may be delayed or missed depending on the provider. For production automations, use an always-on VPS, a paid app instance, or n8n Cloud.
How much RAM do I need to run n8n on free hosting?
For light personal use, n8n can often run with around 512 MB to 1 GB of RAM, especially with only a few simple workflows. More complex workflows, large data transformations, many executions, or mulle active webhooks can quickly need 1 GB to 2 GB or more. If your free host frequently restarts or kills the process, memory limits are usually one of the first things to check.
Is free n8n hosting safe for real business workflows?
Free hosting is fine for learning, prototypes, and low-risk personal automations, but it is not ideal for sensitive or business-critical workflows. You need to consider encrypted credentials, HTTPS, backups, access control, provider reliability, and data residency. If workflows handle customer data, payments, internal systems, or compliance-related records, a paid VPS, managed database, or n8n Cloud plan is usually the safer choice.
