The 80-mile claim belongs to a used VARUN listing on OfferUp; a separate $550 Amazon example, the Gotrax Dolphin, was reported with up to 30 miles of pedal-assist range. Those are different bikes and different offers.
Where the $550 and 80-mile figures come from
The figures trace to two separate listings, not one confirmed product. An OfferUp seller in San Jose offered a used VARUN e-bike for $550 and claimed a maximum speed of 25 mph and 80 miles of range. The listing did not specify the model or explain how the range was measured. It is evidence of a seller’s claim, not proof of the bike’s performance or an Amazon offer.

Separately, an Electrek report dated May 12, 2026 described the Gotrax Dolphin as an Amazon offer. It reported a $550 full price, a sale price of $467.49 at the time, and up to 30 miles of pedal-assisted travel. The report listed a 350 W rear hub motor and a removable 280.8 Wh battery. These are reported listing specifications, not results from an independent test. The Dolphin’s reported range is 30 miles, not 80.
What an 80-mile range claim needs to show
A range figure is useful only when it is tied to a specific bike and test conditions. Before treating 80 miles as a realistic expectation, ask for the exact manufacturer and model, battery capacity, and assistance mode used. Battery capacity may be stated in watt-hours (Wh), or as voltage and amp-hours; those details help identify what battery the claim refers to, but do not establish how far a particular rider will travel.

Look for a test that names its conditions, such as rider load, speed, and temperature. UL’s public verification record illustrates this model-specific approach with results tied to named bikes and stated test conditions. Those records do not verify either the unspecified VARUN listing or the reported Gotrax offer.
The available evidence does not establish how typical the 80-mile claim is, or whether $550 e-bikes generally meet their advertised ranges. It is not enough to generalize from one seller’s unverified listing.

Check electrical certification separately from range
Range and electrical safety are separate purchase questions. UL Solutions describes UL 2849 as evaluating an e-bike’s electrical system, including the drive train, battery, and charger system combination. UL says the standard does not assess whether a rider can maintain control while riding. Treat certification as an electrical-system check, not a complete safety endorsement, and confirm it applies to the exact model and electrical system being sold.

Compare the details before buying
- Model identity: Match the advertised range and any certification to the exact make and model, not just a brand name.
- Battery: Check the stated Wh capacity, or voltage and amp-hours, and confirm which battery is included.
- Range conditions: Look for the assist mode and test details, including load, speed, and temperature. A bare mileage number is not a dependable real-world estimate.
- Electrical certification: Verify that any UL 2849 certification covers the bike’s exact electrical system.
- Offer terms: Check the current price, warranty, and whether the listing is new or used. A past reported price does not establish what a current listing costs.
