A 5,000 mAh battery has no fixed runtime: at an average draw of 500 mA, the ideal estimate is 10 hours; at 1,000 mA, it is 5 hours, provided the capacity and current are measured on the same voltage basis. Those are calculations, not promises about a phone or other device. To estimate runtime from watts—or compare batteries with different voltages—use watt-hours and account for conversion losses and actual usage.
What 5,000 mAh tells you—and what it doesn’t
Milliampere-hours (mAh) measure electrical charge capacity. They do not tell you how many hours a device will run: runtime also depends on the current or power it draws, and a device’s draw can change while it is in use. The simple calculation, capacity divided by average current, is useful only when both figures use the same voltage basis. Anker’s explanation of the calculation makes that distinction important for interpreting a rating.

For comparisons across different voltages, watt-hours (Wh) are more informative because they express energy. The conversion is Wh = (mAh × volts) ÷ 1,000. For example, Xiaomi lists its Magnetic Power Bank 5000, model WPB0507, at 5,000 mAh and 3.7 V, or 18.5 Wh. Xiaomi’s specifications also list a separate rated capacity of 2,800 mAh at the specified 5 V output condition. The figures describe different voltage contexts, not contradictory runtime measurements.

How to estimate runtime
When you know average current
If the battery capacity and average current are on the same voltage basis, divide capacity by current. A 5,000 mAh capacity divided by a 500 mA average draw gives 10 ideal hours; divided by 1,000 mA, it gives 5 ideal hours. In practice, the device’s changing workload and other operating conditions mean actual runtime can differ.

When you know power in watts
Convert the battery capacity to Wh, then divide by the average load in watts. At 3.7 V, 5,000 mAh corresponds to 18.5 Wh. A constant 5 W load would therefore give an ideal energy-based estimate of 3.7 hours (18.5 ÷ 5), before conversion losses and other real-world effects. This is arithmetic based on the listed capacity and voltage, not a measured result for a particular product.
Allow for power-conversion losses
A power bank’s internal cells and its USB output do not necessarily operate at the same voltage, and conversion is not lossless. ADATA’s FAQ illustrates the difference with a worked example: for a 5,000 mAh, 3.7 V power bank, it assumes 85% conversion efficiency and calculates about 3,145 mAh delivered at 5 V. The 85% is an assumption in that example, not a universal efficiency guarantee; actual usable output depends on the battery and conversion system.

Why real battery life varies
A phone or other device does not draw a steady amount of power in every situation. Anker identifies standby, streaming, GPS use, and gaming as different use conditions, and notes factors including screen brightness and refresh rate, processor load, background activity, software optimization, wireless functions, network signal, temperature, and battery age. A demanding workload or weak signal can raise consumption; cold can temporarily reduce available capacity, while heat contributes to long-term battery aging. Anker’s discussion of runtime factors provides further context.
That is why a 5,000 mAh rating alone cannot predict how long a phone will last. Even two phones with the same battery capacity may have different runtimes because their displays, processors, software, and network behavior differ.

How to compare 5,000 mAh batteries and power banks
When comparing power banks, check more than the headline mAh figure. Look for voltage and Wh, rated output capacity under its stated conditions, output power and ports, and any published information about usable energy. For phones, capacity alone is also insufficient: device design and workload matter.
Manufacturer specifications show why it is worth reading the conditions. Xiaomi gives both cell energy and a distinct rated output capacity for its 5,000 mAh model. JBL, by contrast, describes the JBL Xtreme’s physical battery as 5,000 mAh at 7.4 V and 37 Wh; its support page explains that expressing the same energy at 3.7 V would produce twice the mAh figure. These are product-specific examples, not interchangeable runtime tests. JBL’s voltage explanation shows why mAh comparisons need a voltage basis.

For another specification example, NEBO lists its 5K Portable Power Bank at 5,000 mAh, 18.5 Wh/3.7 V, with USB-C and USB-A outputs and a maximum total output of 10.5 W. That output-power figure describes the product’s stated maximum, not how long a connected device will run. NEBO’s product specifications are useful for seeing the kinds of details to check.
