Yes—an old Samsung Galaxy can take on several small Raspberry Pi-style projects, especially if you keep Android and add the Termux command-line environment. It is best suited to lightweight experiments and personal tools, not projects that require Raspberry Pi OS, GPIO pins, or dependable unattended operation. Check your exact Galaxy model and Android/One UI version, then test whether the app your project needs stays active with the screen off.
What a phone can—and cannot—replace
A Galaxy already has an ARM processor, storage, Wi-Fi, a battery, a display, and cameras. Termux adds an Android terminal and Linux environment, with an APT package manager and development tools; the Termux project describes it as a “Terminal emulator and Linux environment for Android.” Termux project

That does not turn the phone into a conventional Raspberry Pi. Even when you run a Linux userspace under PRoot, Android remains in control; it is not the same as booting Raspberry Pi OS, and it does not automatically expose the same privileges or hardware interfaces. A community-documented Termux, Debian-under-PRoot, and OpenSSH setup is one way to make a phone a remote development box, not evidence of Pi-level compatibility. Wojciech Domski’s setup guide

Five projects to try on an old Galaxy
1. Pocket development and SSH box
Install Termux to learn command-line tools or work on lightweight development tasks. One documented approach adds Debian through PRoot and OpenSSH so you can connect remotely. The setup remains Android-hosted rather than a standard Linux installation, so verify that the tools you need work in that environment. Termux project Domski’s Termux development-server example

2. Small local web or utility service
Termux’s package manager and developer tools make it a plausible place to experiment with a personal development endpoint or a simple network utility. Treat this as a project to test on your own phone, not as a guarantee of reliable public hosting: Android background behavior, network conditions, and package availability vary by device and software version. Termux project
3. Camera endpoint or time-lapse device
A fixed Galaxy can serve as the camera for a monitoring or time-lapse experiment, using its built-in camera rather than adding a separate one. The idea is conditional: the available information does not establish continuous-recording reliability for any particular Galaxy model or app. Check heat, charging, storage, network access, and whether your chosen app keeps running for the duration you need. 4. Smart-home display or experimental node
Use the screen as a dedicated dashboard or control display for a smart home. That role is different from making the handset a full-time automation controller: a display can be useful when opened or left visible, while a controller must remain available to run tasks. A community-maintained Termux project documents a Home Assistant-related server setup, but it is an experimental route rather than a supported one-click installation. 5. Media server for a small personal library
If you are comfortable with a more involved setup, an independent guide describes running Jellyfin through Termux and a PRoot Linux environment. It is not a one-tap Android installation. Do not assume an unspecified Galaxy can transcode video, serve multiple users, stay online continuously, or provide a particular amount of usable storage. AndroidLab’s Jellyfin and Termux guide

Check whether your Galaxy can keep the project running
Android places limits on background work, and battery restrictions can stop or constrain apps. Samsung also provides controls for sleeping and deep-sleeping apps, with a Never sleeping apps setting; exact menu names and behavior depend on Android and One UI versions. - Check the phone’s model and Android/One UI version, then confirm the app and setup you plan to use are compatible.
- For an unattended task, review Samsung’s app sleep controls and exempt the chosen app where appropriate. Settings labels and paths can differ between versions.
- Keep the phone powered in a safe, ventilated place if the task needs long runtimes.
- Test the actual workload with the screen off and over the duration you expect to use it. Confirm that the app remains available, the network connection holds, and storage is sufficient.
Passing a short test does not establish long-term reliability. Recheck after changing power settings, updating Android, or switching apps.

When a Raspberry Pi is still the better choice
Choose a Pi when the project specifically needs a standard Linux installation, GPIO or other board-level hardware interfaces, repeatable unattended behavior, or a well-documented Pi-specific setup. A Galaxy may save a project from needing another device, but its Android app environment and background restrictions make it a less direct fit for those jobs. There is no universal performance winner: the answer depends on the exact phone, Pi model, software, and workload. Samsung’s 2017 Linux on Galaxy article described running a Linux distribution as an app while Android controlled device resources.
