You can control Android Auto without picking up your phone: say “Hey Google,” hold your car’s steering-wheel voice button until you hear a tone, or use the microphone button on the car display. From there, ask for directions, calls, messages, or audio. Set up Android Auto while parked, and remember that controls and available features vary by vehicle.
Before you start: set up Android Auto while parked
Android Auto is integrated into supported phones, so Google says you do not need to download it separately. Your phone and vehicle must meet the current requirements, and the car must support Android Auto. If you are unsure about compatibility, check with the vehicle manufacturer.

1. Say “Hey Google”
When Android Auto is active, say “Hey Google” to start a voice request. Depending on the rollout and your device, the voice experience may use Google Assistant or Gemini. Google says Gemini understands the same commands as Assistant and can respond to natural speech; the transition is ongoing, so the assistant and interface you see may differ.

For example, you can say, “Hey Google, take me home,” or ask it to call someone, send a message, or play audio. Google’s voice-command help page explains activation and troubleshooting.
2. Hold the steering-wheel voice button
If your vehicle has a voice command button on the steering wheel, press and hold it until you hear a tone, then speak. Google specifically advises holding the button until the tone; pressing it briefly or speaking before the tone can interfere with recognition or exit Android Auto.
Button availability and behavior depend on the vehicle. Check the owner’s manual if you cannot identify the correct control. If commands are not recognized, wait for the tone before speaking, reduce background noise, and check the microphone if you use an aftermarket receiver.

3. Get directions and manage navigation
Ask for a destination, request directions, or tell the assistant to stop navigation. Google’s examples include “Take me home,” “Navigate to [location],” and “Stop navigation.” You can also ask for estimated arrival information.
If Android Auto offers more than one matching destination, confirm which one you mean. Voice control is useful for avoiding phone interaction, but it does not make every navigation action hands-free: Google says typed destination entry is restricted to when the car is parked. See Google’s turn-by-turn navigation instructions.
4. Make calls, send messages, and reply
Ask the assistant to call a contact, dictate a message, or reply to an incoming message. Google says Android Auto repeats a dictated message and asks you to confirm it before sending, giving you a chance to catch recognition errors.

- Important Compatibility Check - PLEASE READ: This adapter is ONLY compatible with cars equipped with Factory Wired CarPlay or Android Auto (Model Years 2016-2025). ❌ NOT compatible with BMW, Tesla, or vehicles without a wired system. For Android Users: Requires a phone running Android 11 or later with "Wireless Android Auto" enabled. Includes USB-A to USB-C adapter for wider port compatibility.
Some cars also let you answer an incoming call with a steering-wheel control, but this is vehicle-specific. For voice messaging details, see Google’s instructions for sending and receiving messages; for calls, see Google’s calling instructions.
5. Play music, podcasts, and other audio
Ask for a song, artist, playlist, music service, or podcast by name. The audio app must be compatible with Android Auto, and you may need to be signed in; some services also require a subscription. See Google’s Android Auto media guidance for details.
Using the microphone on the car display
If you prefer not to use a wake phrase or steering-wheel control, tap the microphone button on the car’s Android Auto display and speak. This keeps the phone untouched, but it does require touching the vehicle’s screen, so it is not fully voice-initiated.
What voice control does—and does not—make hands-free
Android Auto brings supported apps to the car display and offers voice controls for common driving tasks such as calls, messages, navigation, media, and general questions. It does not mean every feature can be operated without touching a screen: Google notes that actions such as typing messages while moving and scrolling long lists are subject to safety lockouts. Availability also varies by vehicle, app, language, and region. Google’s accessibility guidance describes supported interactions and restrictions.
