When the Conversation History folder is missing in Outlook, it usually isn’t a dramatic data loss event—it’s more often a client-side view issue, a corrupted local cache, or a mailbox setting/policy that controls whether that folder appears.
This guide walks you through five proven fixes, starting with the lowest-risk options. You’ll get exact steps for Outlook for Windows and practical checks you can do in Outlook on the web.

What the Outlook Conversation History folder is (and why it can disappear)
In supported Outlook configurations, Conversation History helps organize threaded email activity so you can quickly follow an ongoing conversation. Depending on your Outlook version, mailbox type, and tenant policies, the folder may show up as a dedicated folder or be represented via conversation views.
#1 Best Overall
It can disappear because of:
- Client-side problems (cached folder list not refreshing, corrupted local view state, broken indexes)
- Corrupted Outlook data (stuck OST, damaged PST)
- Search/indexing mismatches (folder exists but doesn’t appear due to search/catalog issues)
- Mailbox policy / feature availability (Conversation History not enabled for your account or disabled by admin settings)
Before you start: quick checks that prevent wasted time
Do these checks first; they clarify whether you’re dealing with a simple view issue or something deeper.
- Confirm the account: Are you viewing the correct mailbox (especially if you have multiple accounts in Outlook)?
- Check Online mode: Temporarily switch to a stable network and ensure Outlook isn’t in an “offline” or degraded state.
- Test search: In the Outlook search bar, try searching for a known subject or sender from earlier conversation history.
- Compare with OWA: Open Outlook on the web (OWA) for the same mailbox and see whether conversation-related items appear there.
Five ways to fix the missing Outlook Conversation History folder
Use the fixes in order. The first two are the fastest and lowest risk.
1) Rebuild the Conversation History folder by resetting its view and indexing
If the folder list is out of sync or Outlook indexing is misbehaving, the folder can fail to appear even though the mailbox still has the data.
Recommended Free Tools
Try this sequence in Outlook for Windows:
- In Outlook, go to File > Options.
- Select Search.
- Click Indexing Options.
- In the Windows Indexing Options window, click Advanced.
- Under Troubleshooting, click Rebuild (then confirm).
- Restart Outlook after indexing starts rebuilding. Allow several minutes (or longer on large mailboxes).
- After rebuild, use the left pane search or Outlook search to locate the conversation-related items again.
If you rely on Cached Exchange Mode, also let Outlook complete a sync cycle. You’ll know it’s still syncing if the status bar shows activity or if the sync “connecting” indicator persists.
2) Make sure the folder is actually present via Search and Folder view
Sometimes the folder exists but is not visible because the folder view isn’t refreshed or the folder is filtered out.
Do these checks:
- In Outlook, switch to the Mail view.
- On the left, look for Folders and ensure you’re expanding the correct mailbox.
- In the Outlook search bar, type Conversation History and press Enter.
- If search finds items, but you don’t see the folder, use View > Change View and return to Compact (or reset to a default view).
- Close and reopen Outlook once search results confirm the content exists.
Also check whether you accidentally enabled a filter. In the message list header, confirm you don’t have an active filter that hides the relevant folder entries.
3) Repair your Outlook Data File (OST/PST) so folder navigation works again
If folder navigation is broken or Outlook can’t reliably enumerate folders, repairing the data file often restores missing folders to view.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWindows users with Outlook for Windows should run the Inbox Repair Tool (ScanPST) for PST files; for OST corruption, you typically rebuild by recreating the OST (after confirming what account type you’re using).
For PST:
- Close Outlook.
- Open Windows File Explorer.
- Find the PST location: in Outlook, go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings.
- Select your account and note the Data File path.
- Locate ScanPST.exe on your PC (commonly in an Office folder under Program Files).
- Run ScanPST and select your PST file.
- Click Start, then Repair.
- Reopen Outlook and confirm whether Conversation History appears.
For OST (Cached Exchange Mode):
- Close Outlook.
- Recreate the OST by removing it (Outlook will rebuild it on next launch). You can usually find OST location under your profile’s local app data.
- Open Outlook and allow the initial sync to complete.
If you’re on a work/school account and don’t want to risk OST recreation, start with Fix #1 and #4 first, then move here only if folder listing and search are both unreliable.
4) Clear the Outlook client cache and recreate the folder view
A corrupted Outlook cache can make folders appear missing even when the mailbox is healthy. Clearing local cache forces Outlook to re-fetch folder metadata.

Try these steps (Outlook for Windows):
- Close Outlook.
- Open Run (press Win + R).
- Type
%localappdata%and press Enter. - Look for an Outlook cache folder (often under a MicrosoftOutlook-related path) and clear the contents of the cache folder(s). If you see a “Offline Address Book” related cache, leave system files alone.
- Start Outlook again and let it re-sync.
If your Outlook version supports it, also reset the view and restart the client after clearing cache. A mismatch between the cached folder tree and the server’s current folder set is one of the most common causes.
Gotcha: Don’t delete random Office folders. If you’re unsure which cache folder to remove, use the Repair tool approach (Fix #3) or proceed more conservatively with Fix #1 (rebuild index) and Fix #2 (search/folder view).
5) Check server-side policies and enable Conversation History for the mailbox
If your account is in an enterprise tenant, admins can control whether conversation-related features are enabled. In that case, the folder may never appear until the mailbox setting is changed.
Do these checks:
- Open Outlook on the web for the same account.
- Look for any conversation/history-related folder or conversation/thread experience differences.
- If OWA also doesn’t show it, request an admin review (Exchange Online / Microsoft 365). Ask whether the feature is disabled by policy.
- If only desktop Outlook is missing it, the issue is likely client-side (use Fix #1–#4).
If you manage your own Microsoft 365 tenant, confirm the mailbox policy and any organization-level controls affecting conversation or mailbox experiences. Exact menu names differ by tenant and licensing, so the fastest route is a direct policy/feature audit with your admin.
Common symptoms and what to try when a fix doesn’t work
Use this decision table when you hit friction.
| Symptom | Most likely cause | What to try first |
|---|---|---|
| Folder missing in Outlook desktop, but items appear via search | UI/folder view not refreshed | Fix #2, then Fix #4 |
| Folder missing and Outlook search returns nothing relevant | Indexing/caching issue | Fix #1, then Fix #4 |
| Folder missing across Outlook desktop and OWA | Mailbox policy/feature disabled or incompatible client | Fix #5 |
| Random folder errors or broken navigation | Corrupted PST/OST | Fix #3 |
If the “one obvious fix” fails, don’t keep repeating it. Instead, switch categories: if indexing doesn’t help, move to cache rebuild or data repair.

Outlook Conversation History vs other “hidden” folders
Some users look for a literal folder name, but their Outlook setup may represent conversation history differently (for example, through conversation view rather than a dedicated folder). That’s especially common when:
- Your organization disables certain mailbox experiences
- You’re using a specific Outlook build with different UI behavior
- You’re viewing shared or archived mailboxes where folder experiences differ
If you can find the same emails threaded in conversation view but the folder itself is absent, you may be dealing with a “representation mismatch,” not missing data. In that case, Fix #2 (search/folder view checks) is the right path.

Why can I see conversation history in one account but not another?
Different mailboxes can have different policies or feature flags. Also, Outlook may be showing the wrong mailbox if you have multiple accounts configured. Confirm the mailbox in the left pane before assuming the folder is missing.

Sometimes, but it’s rarely the real fix. If the underlying issue is a stale cache, broken index, or corrupted data file, a restart won’t refresh enough to restore the folder reliably.
Best Value
Will rebuilding the Outlook index delete my emails?
No. Index rebuild affects how Outlook searches and displays results, not the stored mailbox messages. Expect a longer search period while indexing completes.
What if I use Outlook for Mac or iPhone and the folder is missing?
Mobile clients typically rely on server-side mailbox structure and may not show the same folder experiences as desktop Outlook. If OWA shows it, but iPhone doesn’t, you may be dealing with client representation differences. If OWA also doesn’t show it, focus on the server-side/policy check (Fix #5).
How do I know whether it’s a policy problem?
If Conversation History is missing in both Outlook desktop and Outlook on the web for the same mailbox, it’s much more likely a server-side configuration. That’s when contacting your Microsoft 365 admin is the fastest route.
Bottom Line
If the Conversation History folder is missing in Outlook, start with quick view and search validation, then rebuild indexing, clear cache, and repair your PST/OST only if navigation and search are both broken. In the minority of cases, the folder won’t appear because the feature is disabled by tenant policy—then the OWA comparison will point you straight to Fix #5.
Work through the five methods in order and use the symptom table to avoid wasting time. With the right next step, most missing-folder cases recover without losing any email content.
