NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN and IPVanish are five candidates worth checking—but the evidence does not show that they are the only VPNs that work well on every Fire TV Stick. Compatibility depends on whether your device runs Android-based Fire OS or Linux-based Vega OS, and streaming access is never guaranteed.
Which VPNs should Fire TV Stick owners consider?
Comparison coverage names NordVPN, ExpressVPN and Surfshark among its Fire TV recommendations. Proton VPN and IPVanish are additional candidates, with compatibility evidence that varies by operating system and source. Treat this as a shortlist for checking, not a universal ranking: the cited reviews use different methods and do not establish that exactly five services are suitable.

Check whether your Fire TV Stick runs Fire OS or Vega OS
The words “Fire TV Stick” are not enough to establish VPN compatibility. Amazon describes Fire OS as a fork of Android, but newer Fire TV Stick generations use Vega OS, which is Linux-based. An app made for Android-based Fire OS should not be assumed to work on Vega OS.
Before choosing a service, find your device’s model and software version in its settings, then compare them with the VPN provider’s current Fire TV instructions and the Amazon Appstore listing. Compatibility lists can become outdated as apps are added, so check them close to installation rather than relying on an old recommendation.

Amazon’s developer documentation says an Android app will “most likely” run on its Fire devices. That guidance concerns Fire OS; it should not be extended to Vega OS.
How to choose among the five candidates
Start with native app support
Prefer an official TV app available for your exact OS. A mobile-oriented app installed by sideloading may be awkward to navigate with a Fire TV remote, even if it launches. Check whether the provider documents remote-friendly setup and support for your device generation.

Consider the streaming services you actually use
A VPN provider’s compatibility claim is not proof that a particular streaming app or title will work through it. Streaming services can change how they handle VPN connections, and availability can vary by location and date. Treat provider promises and another publisher’s test results as evidence to consider, not a guarantee for your account.
For Prime Video, ExpressVPN advises choosing a VPN server in the same country as the country on your Amazon account. That is provider setup advice, not a promise that every title will play.

Compare speed and stability on fair terms
A speed number is useful only with its context: the test device, internet baseline, VPN protocol, server location, measurement method and date. Security.org says its 2026 review tested more than 50 VPN providers and considered security, speed, price, Fire TV compatibility and streaming access. TechRadar describes daily use across services and proprietary tests. Those are the publishers’ descriptions of their own methods; they are not directly comparable tests of all five services under one shared setup.
Security.org also describes approximately six months of testing, more than 300 speed tests and verification of its results by six third-party data privacy experts. These figures describe Security.org’s process, not a prediction of the speed you will get on your own Wi-Fi or Fire TV Stick.

Check privacy features and plan terms separately
Do not treat the presence of a TV app as evidence about privacy or security. Check the provider’s current privacy policy and the documentation for the protocols and protections available in the specific app version. Prices, discounts and plan conditions change; compare the current terms directly before buying.

- Identify your device and OS. Find the Fire TV Stick model and software version in the device settings. Do this before following any installation guide.
- Look for the official app. Search the Amazon Appstore and check the VPN provider’s current instructions for your OS. ExpressVPN documents separate routes for Fire OS and Vega OS.
- Install using the matching route. On Fire OS, ExpressVPN describes installation through the Appstore and an APK sideload alternative. Sideloading instructions are not interchangeable with Vega OS instructions.
- Do not sideload an APK on Vega OS. Security.org says APK sideloading does not work on Linux-based Vega OS. Use an officially supported Vega OS app route instead.
- Test your own streaming apps. After connecting, open the services you use and check playback and stability. A working VPN connection alone does not establish that a streaming service will allow the title you want.
Is “only five work well” accurate?
No universal evidence in the cited sources proves that exactly five VPNs work well across all Fire TV Stick models and operating systems. Security.org, TechRadar and other comparison publishers differ in their test methods and recommendations. The shortlist above gathers five services with cited Fire TV-related evidence, but it is not an exhaustive compatibility list or a controlled head-to-head ranking.

For a genuine ranking, comparisons would need to specify the Fire TV model and OS version, test date, VPN app version, streaming services and locations tried, network conditions, and the method used to measure speed and stability. Without those details, a precise “best” order—or a claim that all other VPNs fail—would overstate what the available evidence shows.
