There is no well-supported, definitive list of five video games released in 1985 that changed gaming forever. The evidence available here confirms Super Mario Bros. as a 1985 release and places Tetris in circulation that year—but its first version was developed in 1984. Because the other three entries cannot be substantiated, presenting a canonical five would overstate what is known.
What counts as a game “from 1985”?
The phrase can mean a game was created that year, first released commercially in a particular territory, ported to another platform, or began circulating more widely. Those milestones are not interchangeable. A careful list needs to name which one it means and give the territory and platform where the evidence establishes them.

That distinction matters especially for Tetris. Its history shows development in 1984, followed by a 1985 IBM PC port and spread through the Soviet Union—not an unqualified first release in 1985.

Calling five games “the” titles that changed gaming forever implies an established selection and a common measure of influence. The available official histories establish neither. They support specific claims about two games, but do not provide a comparative ranking or enough evidence to verify three additional entries and explain their later influence.

Influence can mean different things: changing game design, expanding a platform’s audience, altering how games were distributed, or reaching new players. Those are useful ways to assess a candidate, but each requires evidence connecting the game to the claimed effect. A release date alone does not prove lasting influence.

What the evidence supports
- Super Mario Bros. is confirmed by Nintendo as a 1985 Family Computer/NES software release.
- Tetris was developed in 1984 and spread to Soviet PCs in 1985; calling it simply a 1985 release loses that distinction.
- Nintendo’s description of Super Mario Bros. as a worldwide hit is a retrospective statement by the company, not a neutral market statistic.
- The Tetris Company’s more-than-35-million figure refers to its account of the game’s role in the 1989 Game Boy launch, not sales in 1985.
