An unused Raspberry Pi can become a useful home server—but the right project depends on its model, memory, storage and the job you need it to do. Start with one service: Pi-hole or AdGuard Home for network DNS filtering, Home Assistant for smart-home control, Syncthing for syncing files between your own devices, or Jellyfin as a cautious media-library experiment.
Before choosing, identify the Pi and check its power supply and storage. A card that has been sitting unused may not be dependable enough for an always-on service. The projects below have different hardware needs and consequences if the Pi goes offline, so they are not interchangeable—and running several together is not automatically a good fit.

Choose a project that solves a real problem
Think about what you want the Pi to do, then consider what happens when it is unavailable. DNS filtering can affect name resolution across your home network; a file-sync node affects only participating devices and folders; smart-home control matters to the extent that your setup depends on it. A media server adds its own workload and performance constraints.
| Service | Useful for | Key constraint | If the Pi goes offline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pi-hole | Filtering DNS requests for clients configured to use it | Documented minimum: 512 MB RAM and 2 GB free storage; 4 GB storage recommended. Pi-hole documentation | Clients relying on it for DNS may have trouble resolving domain names. |
| Home Assistant | Smart-home control and automation | The current Pi installation guidance specifies a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 with at least 2 GB RAM and other requirements. Home Assistant installation guide | Home Assistant services hosted on the Pi will be unavailable. |
| Syncthing | Keeping selected folders in sync between devices | Low-powered hardware can become CPU-limited, especially during file hashing and other work. Syncthing FAQ | Syncing through that device pauses until it returns; synchronization is not a backup. |
| AdGuard Home | An alternative DNS-filtering service | Its getting-started documentation lists a 32-bit ARMv6 option recommended for Raspberry Pi; the excerpt does not establish compatibility for every model. AdGuard Home getting started | Clients relying on it for DNS may have trouble resolving domain names. |
| Jellyfin | Experimenting with a local media library | Jellyfin warns that most single-board computers, including Raspberry Pi, may be too slow for an acceptable experience because hardware-acceleration support is limited. Jellyfin hardware selection | Media hosted by the server will not be available through it. |
What to check before installing anything
Identify the Pi and inspect its storage
Find the exact Raspberry Pi model and RAM before picking software. Do not assume requirements for a newer model apply to an older one. Check the power supply and the condition of the existing microSD card; an old or unreliable card is a poor foundation for a service expected to run continuously.

Decide whether the service needs to be always available
A DNS filter is only useful to clients that use it as their resolver, so changing router or device DNS settings makes the Pi part of ordinary network operation. Before changing those settings, have a maintenance plan and a way to restore the previous configuration if the service or Pi is unavailable. For a service accessed beyond your home network, avoid casually exposing its management interface to the public internet.
Prefer a wired connection for network services
Ethernet is a sensible choice when feasible for a device providing DNS or other home services. Home Assistant’s Pi installation instructions require Ethernet during installation and recommend it for reliability.
Pi-hole: filter DNS requests on your network
Pi-hole is a lightweight DNS-filtering service, and its documentation supports operating systems beyond Raspberry Pi as well. It requires at least 512 MB RAM and 2 GB of free storage, with 4 GB storage recommended; those figures are Pi-hole’s requirements, not a general specification for the other projects in this guide. It is a practical first project if you want DNS filtering and are comfortable making the service part of your network setup. Its effect depends on clients using Pi-hole as their DNS resolver. If the Pi or service is down, clients configured to rely on it may lose DNS resolution, so plan for maintenance before redirecting your network’s DNS.
Home Assistant: run smart-home control at home
Home Assistant is a better match when your goal is to manage smart-home devices or automations locally. The current Raspberry Pi installation guidance calls for a Pi 4 or Pi 5 with at least 2 GB RAM, a suitable power supply, an A2 microSD card of at least 32 GB, an SD card reader and Ethernet. Ethernet is required for installation and recommended for reliability. Raspberry Pi installation requirements
Choose the installation type deliberately
Home Assistant OS is the recommended installation type for most people installing on their own hardware. Home Assistant Container is a different route with limitations; users who want Home Assistant “apps” need another installation type. Follow the installation guidance for the exact Pi model rather than applying the Pi 4 and Pi 5 requirements to older boards. Home Assistant installation options

- 【 Faster CPU, Better GPU 】 Pi 5 features a Broadcom BCM2712 64-bit quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor running at 2.4GHz, it delivers a 2–3× increase in CPU performance relative to RaspberryPi 4. The 800MHz VideoCore VII GPU is compatible to OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan 1.2, substantial uplift in graphics performance. Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.
If your card is not suitable, the Home Assistant guide specifies an A2 microSD card with at least 32 GB capacity for its Raspberry Pi installation. Check compatibility with your particular Pi, and use the suitable power supply, card reader and Ethernet connection required by the setup. This is a more specific hardware commitment than the other lightweight ideas here.
Syncthing: sync selected folders between your devices
Syncthing connects devices and shares folders between them using device IDs and folder configuration. A Raspberry Pi can participate as a sync node, for example as a home device that links selected folders on computers or other devices.
Keep the scope modest. Syncthing’s FAQ notes that low-powered devices such as Raspberry Pi can be limited by CPU workload. Hashing new or changed files, optional compression, encryption and scanning or maintaining the file index all take processing time. That makes the Pi a less suitable choice for a high-throughput storage server.

Jellyfin: a media-library experiment, not a guaranteed server
Jellyfin can organize a local media library, but Raspberry Pi is a risky choice for serving it. Jellyfin’s hardware guidance warns that most single-board computers, including Raspberry Pi—especially Pi 5—may be too slow for an acceptable experience because hardware-acceleration support is limited. Do not count on a Pi for robust transcoding or assume it will deliver 4K playback. Jellyfin hardware selection
If you want to experiment anyway, keep expectations conservative and check whether the playback device can handle the media directly, without relying on the Pi to transcode it. This is a cautious way to try the idea, not a performance guarantee.
Pick one first service, then evaluate the result
- Choose Pi-hole or AdGuard Home if DNS filtering is the goal and you are prepared to account for DNS availability on your network.
- Choose Home Assistant if you have a Pi 4 or 5 that meets its documented requirements and want a dedicated smart-home platform.
- Choose Syncthing for syncing a modest set of folders between devices, while keeping a separate backup.
- Try Jellyfin only if you accept the hardware caveat and have modest playback expectations.
Start with one project and see how the Pi behaves under the workload you actually give it. These services solve different problems, and the available documentation does not establish that one Raspberry Pi will run all five well at once.
