The most useful bicycle gadget depends on the job: signaling to others, navigating and tracking a ride, noticing traffic approaching from behind, recording a trip, or building a custom device. These five picks cover those distinct needs, but they are not interchangeable. The list is based on products highlighted by SlashGear in a roundup updated September 26, 2026; its cyclist framing draws on cycling discussions and expert publications, not a representative survey of riders.
Choose by the job you want the gadget to do
Start with the problem, then check how the device fits your bicycle and your existing equipment. A radar light will not provide navigation, a bike computer will not alert you to every vehicle, and a Raspberry Pi board is a starting point for a project rather than a ready-to-ride accessory.

1. Daway A14 electric bicycle horn for electronic signaling
The Daway A14 is the signaling pick. In its roundup, SlashGear describes it as an electronic horn with five selectable modes, a separate control switch, a universal bicycle mount, and two AAA batteries. SlashGear also reports that Ride Review gave it an average expert score of 4.3; that figure is a review score reported by the roundup, not a cyclist survey.

Consider how you will mount and operate the control, and remember that batteries need replacing. The “110 dB” wording in the product name should not be read as a guarantee of real-world audibility or safety: conditions, distance, and surroundings matter. A horn also does not replace riding predictably or checking that other road users have noticed you.

3. Garmin Varia RTL515 for rearward vehicle alerts
The Varia RTL515 combines a rear light with radar that alerts a rider to approaching vehicles. Garmin says its radar can detect approaching vehicles up to 140 meters away, and that it can pair with a compatible Edge computer or smartphone. It mounts to the seatpost of most road-use bicycles. These capabilities can add awareness, but the device is not a substitute for looking and listening for traffic.

Garmin lists up to 16 hours of operation in day-flash mode and up to 6 hours in solid mode, as well as an IPX7 water rating. These are manufacturer-stated specifications, not independent test results. The RTL515 is a rear radar and tail light, not a front light; riders who need front illumination must use a separate front light.

4. GoPro HERO12 Black for recording rides
The GoPro HERO12 Black is the recording option in the list. Before a ride, confirm that you have a suitable mount and that it is compatible with your chosen position and camera setup.
If you already own a HERO11, the roundup says its reviewer found little reason to upgrade. That is a caveat about the upgrade decision, not a claim that the HERO12 cannot be useful to a first-time action-camera buyer. Current model status and mount availability are not established here, so verify them before purchase.

5. Raspberry Pi 5 for a do-it-yourself bicycle project

Each project still requires suitable additional components, assembly, and a way to mount and power the result safely on a bicycle.

How to narrow the choice
- Need a simple signaling device? Consider the electronic horn, and check control placement and battery requirements.
- Want maps, ride metrics, or structured training? Consider a bike computer and verify compatibility with your phone, sensors, and preferred navigation setup.
- Want alerts about vehicles behind you? Consider a rear radar light, but plan separately for front lighting if you need it.
- Want footage? Consider an action camera, mount it securely, and weigh the recording use against whether replacing an existing camera is worthwhile.
- Want to invent or customize? Consider a Raspberry Pi-based build only if you are prepared to source parts and assemble a complete system.
