Requirements vary by lender and loan program, so ask the lender handling your application for its exact checklist.
1. Specify how much you need and what it will fund
Start with a dollar amount supported by actual costs, then connect each major expense to a business need. A request for equipment, for example, should identify the equipment and explain how it will support operations or revenue. For working capital, describe the expense the funds will cover and when you expect the business to generate enough cash to repay the loan.

Eligible uses for an SBA 7(a) loan include working capital, real estate, equipment, furniture and supplies, refinancing business debt, and changes of ownership. Check that the program permits your intended use and explain how the amount requested fits your repayment plan. The SBA’s 7(a) loan overview lists program uses and requirements.

A lender needs to understand what the business does, who runs it, the market it serves, and how the loan supports its plans. Keep the plan specific: describe the project the financing will pay for, the expected business impact, and the assumptions behind your estimates.

The right format depends on the lender and the purpose of the loan; do not assume every lender requires an identical plan. The SBA says most lenders expect a business plan when considering startup funding. Its Lender Match guidance and business-planning guidance can help you organize the material.
3. Organize financial statements and realistic projections
Make it easy to see how the business has performed and how it expects to meet future payments. SBA planning guidance recommends that established businesses prepare income statements, balance sheets, and cash-flow statements covering the previous three to five years. It also recommends projecting the next five years, with quarterly or monthly projections for the first year. These are planning recommendations, not a universal underwriting rule; follow the lender’s requested periods and formats.

Check that the figures agree across your statements and plan. Explain unusual changes, major one-time expenses, or assumptions that materially affect projected cash flow. A forecast is more useful when its assumptions—such as sales growth, costs, and timing—are clear rather than presented as guaranteed results.
4. Assess credit, repayment capacity, and collateral
Before applying, review your business and personal credit information and prepare to discuss the business’s cash flow, existing debt, owner investment, and available collateral. Lenders may consider these factors, but their criteria and collateral policies vary by lender and program.
Rank #3
For SBA 7(a) financing, the SBA says borrowers must be creditworthy and demonstrate a reasonable ability to repay. A strong credit profile or pledged collateral does not guarantee approval. Be ready to show how scheduled payments fit the business’s cash flow and to answer questions about current obligations.
5. Compare lenders and get the application checklist
Compare offers on more than the advertised interest rate. Ask each lender about fees, repayment length and payment structure, prepayment penalties, grace periods, collateral or guarantees, cash-flow and credit requirements, underwriting timing, and whether the lender can demand full repayment. Also confirm that the loan’s permitted uses match what you need to fund.

An SBA 7(a) loan is made by a participating lender; the SBA guarantee supports the lender, and applicants work directly with that lender. The SBA lists a maximum 7(a) loan amount of $5 million in current program guidance verified in 2026. Confirm the applicable limit and rules when applying, since program details can change.
The SBA states: “The contents of the loan application vary depending on the size of the loan and the lender’s processing method.” As a result, do not treat a general SBA document list as every lender’s complete checklist. Ask the lender which forms, statements, projections, tax records, ownership details, and other materials apply to your request.
SBA Form 1919 is identified as the 7(a) Borrower Information Form and is effective March 19, 2025. It asks about the applicant, owners, loan request, existing debt, and related eligibility matters. Confirm with the lender whether it applies to your application and whether a newer version is available.
