Five brands challenge Apple in smartphones, but they do so in different ways: Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi and OnePlus compete with high-end phones, while Google challenges Apple both through Android and its Pixel hardware. There is no official ranking of these rivals. Their position depends on the market: Samsung led worldwide smartphone shipments in Q2 2026, while Huawei led mainland China.
What does it mean to compete with Apple?
Apple’s smartphone business combines iPhone hardware with iOS and services. Its largest platform rival is Android, which is used by multiple phone makers rather than a single equivalent to Apple. In a UK market study, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) described Apple and Google as central mobile ecosystem providers. It also identified network effects around apps and users, and barriers people may face when switching between iOS and Android, including moving data, apps and subscriptions. The CMA noted that the ecosystems are not perfect substitutes and that Android devices span price segments beyond Apple’s iOS range. Read the CMA market study.

That makes “competing with Apple” broader than matching an iPhone feature for feature. It can mean making premium phones that appeal to iPhone buyers, building an alternative platform, or selling at scale in a region where Apple is not the market leader.

Shipment share measures devices shipped during a period. It is not the same as revenue share, the number of phones in use, customer satisfaction or product quality. The rankings below are therefore evidence of market position, not a verdict on which phone is best.

1. Samsung: Apple’s largest listed global shipment rival
Samsung is the most direct large-scale hardware competitor in this list. The CMA’s UK study named it as a specific premium-segment competitor to Apple. In IDC’s worldwide smartphone shipment table for Q2 2026, Samsung ranked first with 62.7 million units and 22.7% share, up 8.1% year over year. Apple ranked second with 55.7 million units and 20.2% share. These are global quarterly shipments, not a claim that Samsung leads in every country or that its phones are more popular with every buyer. See IDC’s smartphone market-share data.
The scale figures also sit within a changing market. IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo described the quarter this way: “This is a crisis that rewards scale, supply relationships and a premium mix,” referring to the pressures shaping vendor performance. Shipment totals help explain Samsung’s reach; they do not tell a shopper whether a particular Galaxy model is the right alternative to a particular iPhone.

2. Google: an Android platform rival with Pixel phones
Google’s competitive role has two parts. Android is the principal licensable mobile operating system and a major alternative to Apple’s iOS; Pixel is Google’s own phone hardware line. That distinction matters: Google competes with Apple at the ecosystem level even though Pixel is only one maker’s hardware within Android.

3. Huawei: a major rival in mainland China
Huawei is another premium competitor named in the CMA’s UK study, but its current strength is especially clear in mainland China. Omdia reports that Huawei led that market in Q2 2026 with 23% of smartphone shipments, ahead of Apple at 19%. Omdia attributes Huawei’s resilience to product launches, stable pricing, premium demand, research and development capability, and alignment with domestic supply chains. IDC separately reported Huawei year-over-year growth of 19.9% in its Q2 2026 commentary. Read Omdia’s mainland China Q2 2026 report.
These figures describe mainland China, not Huawei’s position in every country. They also do not establish that Huawei phones offer the same software, app access or availability everywhere; those details depend on market and model.

4. Xiaomi: a global-scale Android maker with uneven momentum
Xiaomi combines substantial shipment scale with a presence in the premium segment. The CMA recorded Apple’s view that Xiaomi was among the strong recent entrants with high-end devices; this was Apple’s submitted position in the regulator’s study, not an independent CMA ranking.
IDC ranked Xiaomi third worldwide in Q2 2026, with 31.2 million shipments and 11.3% share, but reported a 26.4% year-over-year decline. In mainland China, Omdia ranked Xiaomi fifth with 12% share. The different placements show why geography and measurement period matter: neither figure alone describes Xiaomi’s standing everywhere or the performance of a particular model.

5. OnePlus: a premium challenger without a standalone figure here
OnePlus belongs on a list of Apple challengers because it has brought high-end phones to the Android market. The CMA’s report records Apple identifying OnePlus as a strong recent entrant with high-end devices. As with Xiaomi, that is an attributed competitor view, not an official regulator ranking.
Do not read Omdia’s mainland China figures as OnePlus-specific market share: its Q2 2026 vendor table groups OnePlus and realme within OPPO. The cited sources establish OnePlus as a premium challenger but do not provide a current standalone worldwide shipment ranking.
Which brand is the closest iPhone alternative?
There is no single answer without a country and a specific model. If the comparison is about worldwide shipment scale, Samsung is the clearest hardware rival in the cited Q2 2026 data. If it is about the mobile platform, Google’s Android is the broad alternative to iOS, while Pixel is Google’s own hardware option. In mainland China, Huawei led shipments in the same quarter. Xiaomi and OnePlus are relevant premium Android challengers, but the figures available for them have different geographic and vendor-grouping limits.
For a buying decision, compare the phones and services available to you rather than relying on brand rank. Check the exact model’s local price, software-support policy, camera, battery and display performance, warranty, and compatibility with the apps, subscriptions and accessories you already use. Switching systems can involve transferring data and services, and the CMA’s UK study identifies those ecosystem frictions; the practical impact depends on your own setup.
