A compatible smart AC controller is the most direct way to add phone control and scheduling to an existing air conditioner. Room and presence sensors can give compatible automations more information; a fan or air purifier can serve a separate comfort or indoor-air goal. None of these add-ons increases an air conditioner’s cooling capacity, and the evidence here does not establish that they improve its efficiency.
1. Smart AC controller: add app control and schedules
A smart AC controller communicates with a compatible air conditioner through its remote-control system, then adds features such as app control, scheduling, and remote operation. It is the closest thing on this list to an upgrade of the air conditioner itself.

Sensibo describes its compatibility as applying to “any air conditioner or heat pump with a remote control,” and lists window, split, cassette, portable, and central systems. tado° says its Smart AC Control requires an infrared remote that displays the current settings. Its product page reports coverage of “3,000+ models and 200+ brands”; this is a vendor-reported compatibility figure, so confirm your model rather than treating it as independent testing. Some AC controllers also depend on local electrical standards. Aqara describes its upgraded air-conditioning controller for 16A plugs and notes that adapters may be needed for some 10A outlets. This is a regional product specification, not a universal plug recommendation; check the version sold in your market and the electrical requirements for your outlet. Aqara’s product page provides its stated specifications.
2. Room temperature and humidity sensor: measure where you are
A separate room sensor can provide temperature and humidity readings from a location apart from the air conditioner. That can be useful when the AC’s built-in sensor or the controller’s position does not reflect conditions where people spend time. Whether those readings can affect cooling depends on the controller and its supported automations.

A presence sensor can be used with a supported controller and automation to manage cooling based on whether a room is occupied. HomeSmart’s Singapore listing presents Aqara’s FP300 as an accessory intended to stop cooling empty rooms. That is a vendor-described use case, not evidence of a guaranteed energy saving; the result depends on the setup, room, schedule, and how the occupants use the AC. Check that your controller and smart-home platform can use the sensor in the automation you want. HomeSmart’s listing describes the regional setup.

4. Smart air circulator fan: move air alongside the AC
A smart circulator fan is an airflow and comfort accessory, not an AC controller. Apple’s Home accessory directory lists a Smartmi Air Circulator Fan. The reviewed product information does not establish that using such a fan lowers room temperature or improves an air conditioner’s performance. 5. Standalone smart air purifier: a separate indoor-air appliance
A smart air purifier serves a different purpose from an AC upgrade: it is a separate appliance for readers seeking air-cleaning functionality. Apple’s accessory directory lists several smart air purifiers, but the listed material does not establish a specific air-quality outcome or a cooling benefit. How to choose an AC gadget that will work in your home
- Identify your AC and remote. Note the exact model and whether it has a remote. For an infrared controller, check whether the remote displays current mode, temperature, and fan settings; tado° specifies those displayed settings as a requirement. Sensibo describes broad remote-controlled AC compatibility, but verify your specific unit.
- Check the app and smart-home platform. Confirm that the controller supports the platform you use and that the particular features you want are available. For tado°, schedules and remote app control are included; automatic geofencing and open-window detection require Auto-Assist.
- Confirm what comes in the box. A room sensor may be an optional purchase: Sensibo says its Room Sensor is sold separately.
- Verify electrical fit and regional availability. Check plug type, voltage, and outlet requirements for the exact model sold where you live. Do not apply Aqara’s 16A specification or adapter note outside the regional product context.
- Separate add-on convenience from AC capacity. A controller adds compatible controls; sensors supply readings for supported automations; a fan moves air; a purifier is a separate appliance. None is a substitute for correctly sized, functioning air conditioning.
- Check whether the model is still sold. A product page can remain online after a device is discontinued. For example, GE’s page for the APFA08YBMW portable air conditioner says the model is no longer manufactured.
What these gadgets can—and cannot—upgrade
For an existing compatible AC, a smart controller can add controls and scheduling, while sensors can support room- or occupancy-based automations if the system allows them. Fans and purifiers are adjacent appliances with separate purposes. The available product information does not demonstrate that any of these gadgets raises cooling capacity, fixes an undersized or malfunctioning AC, or delivers quantified energy savings.
