5 Self-Hosted Services That Can Make a Home Network More Useful

Five self-hosted services can solve different home-network problems, from DNS filtering to media and photo libraries. Here is what each adds—and what to plan for.

The source article names five services, not four: Pi-hole, Homepage, Uptime Kuma, Jellyfin, and Immich. Each solves a different everyday problem, but each also adds a setup or reliability consideration. Start with the one that addresses a need you already have; a home server should make routine tasks easier, not become another job.

These services are independent options, not a package you need to install all at once. Pi-hole works at the network’s DNS layer, Homepage helps you find services, Uptime Kuma checks whether they are responding, Jellyfin organizes and streams personal media, and Immich manages a photo and video library. The trade-offs range from configuration and outage planning to remote access, hardware capacity, and backups.

What each service does—and what it asks of you

Service Useful for Main setup or reliability consideration
Pi-hole Applying DNS blocklists across devices DNS may fail if its host goes down and no secondary DNS is configured; it cannot block every first-party ad.
Homepage Finding services and viewing live stats in one dashboard Configuration uses YAML.
Uptime Kuma Checking service availability and response-time history If it shares hardware with the services it monitors, one hardware failure can take out both.
Jellyfin Organizing and playing a personal media library Remote access requires a VPN or reverse proxy; 4K transcoding calls for capable hardware.
Immich Managing a photo and video library, including automatic phone backups It uses multiple containers and several gigabytes of RAM; the library still needs another copy.

Pi-hole: blocklist-based DNS filtering for the whole network

Pi-hole acts as a DNS sinkhole: devices ask it to resolve domain names, and it can refuse requests for domains on configured blocklists. That can reduce requests to known ad, tracker, scam, phishing, or malware command domains across devices such as phones, smart TVs, consoles, and IoT equipment.

DNS filtering has limits. It cannot reliably block an ad served from the same domain as the content—such as some ads on YouTube—because blocking that domain could also block the content. It also introduces a dependency: if the Pi-hole host fails, devices relying on it may lose DNS resolution. Configure a secondary DNS server if continued resolution during an outage matters, understanding that clients and network equipment may not all handle multiple DNS entries identically.

Homepage: a directory for services you run

Once a home setup has several services, remembering each IP address and port becomes friction. Homepage provides a single dashboard for service links and live stats; its widgets can retrieve information from services including Pi-hole, Jellyfin, and Immich.

The stated setup cost is YAML configuration. That is a reasonable trade if you are comfortable editing configuration files, but it is not a zero-maintenance graphical setup. Homepage is most useful when you already have services worth collecting in one place.

Uptime Kuma: detect failures and slowdowns

Uptime Kuma can check HTTP endpoints, TCP ports, ping responses, and Docker containers. It can send alerts through Discord, Telegram, or email. Its response-time history can also help distinguish a service that is down from one that is responding unusually slowly.

Backed by 339 reliability tests and a 72-hour full-load aging test, it's engineered for dependable long-term performance.
  • 🏢[Business-Ready, Compact & Efficient] Pre-installed OS, the GEEKOM A5 supports Wake-on-LAN, Scheduled Power On, and Group Policy, making deployment and remote management simple for businesses. Its ultra-compact 0.6L design fits neatly behind monitors or into space-limited workstations while delivering excellent power efficiency for home offices, front desks, and commercial environments.

Where Kuma runs affects what it can tell you. If it shares a host with the services being monitored, a host failure can take down both the services and the monitor, leaving you without an independent alert. A separate low-power device reduces that shared-failure risk; it is an optional reliability choice, not a stated minimum requirement.

Jellyfin: stream a personal media library

Jellyfin is a free, open-source personal media server with apps for TVs and phones as well as browser access. It organizes and plays a personal library without ads, trackers, analytics, or subscriptions, according to the source article.

Plan remote access deliberately

Accessing Jellyfin from outside your home requires a VPN or a reverse proxy. The source article favors WireGuard or Tailscale as safer and easier options, but that comparison is the author’s recommendation rather than an independently verified assessment. Whichever approach you choose, avoid exposing a service to the internet without understanding how its access is secured.

This allows you to easily add a second solid-state drive for up to an additional 2TB of storage capacity (upgrades not included) without needing to remove or reinstall the original operating system.
  • 【Radeon 6-Core Graphics & Triple 4K Displays】 Integrated with official AMD Radeon Graphics (6 Graphics Cores, 1500 MHz frequency) for casual gaming, photo editing, and crisp 4K media decoding. Featuring 1x HDMI 2.0 port, 1x DisplayPort, and 1x Full-Function Type-C port, the E5 outputs true 4K@60Hz resolution to three monitors at once. This multi-screen setup eliminates constant window-switching for traders, programmers, and office workers.
  • 【Dual 2.5GbE LAN Ports for Advanced Networking】 Experience fast wired network transmission speeds up to 2500Mbps without lagging or buffering. The integration of dual 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports (powered by Realtek RTL8125 controller) makes this compact computer an exceptional hardware choice for tech enthusiasts. Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.

Match the hardware to transcoding needs

Direct playback and transcoding are different workloads. For 4K transcoding, the article recommends a capable CPU with Intel Quick Sync or a dedicated GPU. It provides no minimum processor, GPU, or performance benchmark, so treat those as hardware-selection factors rather than a guarantee that a particular machine will handle your library.

Immich: a self-hosted photo and video library

Immich can manage photos and videos, automatically back up a phone’s media, and offer natural-language search using local models, according to the source article. Those features can make it appealing if you want a more integrated home for a growing personal library.

It is also the service here with a particularly important data-safety caveat: Immich uses multiple containers and several gigabytes of RAM, and its own library is not a second backup. Keep another copy of the photos and videos somewhere separate. A single storage device running Immich does not protect the collection if that device fails.

Which service should you start with?

  • Choose Pi-hole if network-wide DNS blocklists address a specific annoyance, and you are prepared to plan for DNS availability.
  • Choose Homepage if you already run services and want a single place to reach them, and YAML configuration is acceptable.
  • Choose Uptime Kuma when you have enough services or devices that outages and slow responses are difficult to track manually. Consider hosting it separately if independent monitoring matters.
  • Choose Jellyfin if you want to organize and play a personal media library, and can plan for remote access and any transcoding your playback requires.
  • Choose Immich if phone photo and video management is the need, and you can provide the memory and a separate copy of the library.

The source article’s practical recommendation is to begin with one service tied to a real need, then add others as the setup grows. It singles out Pi-hole as a quick-benefit starting point and sees a dashboard or monitor as more useful once several services are in place; those are the author’s judgments, not measured results.
