Roku has several useful features that are easy to miss: a guest profile that protects your accounts, private listening for quiet viewing, programmable shortcut buttons, voice search, and phone or computer mirroring. Each feature depends on your Roku model, remote, operating-system version, country, language, and the apps you use, so check compatibility before troubleshooting.
1. Turn on Guest Mode before visitors arrive
Guest Mode lets visitors sign in to their own streaming accounts and subscriptions without exposing the accounts already saved on your Roku. It also helps prevent unauthorized purchases and keeps guests from affecting your recommendations. Roku says guests are signed out and their added apps and account information are removed automatically on the checkout date you set.

How to enable it
- Open Settings on the Roku home screen.
- Select Guest Mode. On some Roku OS versions, the setting is labeled Auto Sign Out.
- Turn the feature on and choose the checkout date.
- Give guests the on-screen instructions for signing in with their own accounts.
Guest Mode availability varies by country and Roku OS version. It is intended for temporary users; it is not a separate permanent household profile. Before guests leave, confirm the checkout date is correct and that the Roku is connected to the internet so sign-out can complete.
2. Use private listening when the room must stay quiet
Private listening sends Roku audio to headphones instead of the television speakers. You can use a compatible voice remote with a built-in headphone jack or the free Roku mobile app. With the app method, up to four mobile devices can connect to one Roku device for private listening.
#1 Best Overall
- Easy voice search & control: Quickly search across thousands of top channels, play entertainment, control your streaming, and more with your voice
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, control your Roku device, switch inputs on your Roku TV, and more—all in a tap
- Pre-set channel shortcuts: Pre-set channel shortcuts let you launch popular streaming channels with the push of a button, all without having to scroll
- Simple setup: Simply turn on your Roku device and pull the battery tab on the back of the remote and it should pair automatically
- Works with your Roku device: Roku Voice Remote works with all Roku TV models, Roku audio products, and most Roku players*
Remote-headphone method
- Plug compatible headphones into the headphone jack on the voice remote.
- Start playback on the Roku.
- Adjust volume with the remote controls; the TV speakers should mute while private listening is active.
Mobile-app method
- Install the Roku mobile app on a compatible phone or tablet.
- Connect the mobile device and Roku to the same local network.
- Open the remote interface and select the headphones or private-listening control.
- Connect headphones to the phone or tablet and adjust volume on that device.
On supported Roku Streambar configurations, private listening applies to the built-in streaming player, not to external inputs connected through the television or soundbar. If the headphone icon is missing, verify the Roku model, app version, network connection, and region support.
3. Program buttons 1 and 2 for recurring commands
Compatible Roku voice remotes can save a frequently used app launch or voice command to the buttons marked 1 and 2. This is faster than repeating a voice request or navigating through the home screen.

Save a shortcut
- Press the voice button and speak the command you want to reuse, such as opening a supported app or requesting a particular action.
- After the command finishes, press and hold button 1 or 2 for five seconds.
- When prompted, choose Last voice command.
- Press the programmed button once to run the saved command later.
The shortcut feature is limited to compatible voice remotes and supported commands. A standard infrared remote or a voice remote without programmable buttons will not show this option. If a shortcut stops working, save it again after updating the Roku or changing the relevant app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches4. Use Roku voice search with the right expectations
Voice search can find content and control supported Roku functions, but the experience differs by remote and region. With push-to-talk voice, the remote listens only while you hold down the voice button. That design reduces accidental listening: release the button and the remote stops listening.

- Stay powered for months: Keep your remote running for three months on a single charge. With 50% more battery life and USB-C charging, Roku Voice Remote Pro (2nd Edition) is the ultimate TV companion.
- Built for movie nights: No more fumbling in the dark to find the pause button or turn up the volume. Always know what you’re about to press with easy-to-see backlit buttons.
- Just talk to it: Got popcorn fingers? Leave the remote in the other room? Just say “Hey Roku” from across the couch and control your streaming with your voice.
- Find your lost remote: Don't break a sweat tearing apart the couch. Just say “Hey Roku, where’s my remote?” or find it using the free Roku Mobile app.
- One that does it all: No more juggling remotes. Roku Voice Remote Pro (2nd Edition) powers up your TV, adjusts the volume, and controls your Roku device.
Push-to-talk voice
- Press and hold the voice button.
- Speak clearly while holding it.
- Release the button to submit the request.
Hands-free voice
The Voice Remote Pro (2nd Edition) supports hands-free commands when its side slider is set to green. If the slider is off, it behaves like a push-to-talk remote. Hands-free operation can be unavailable or restricted depending on country, language, Roku device, and the type of content you are trying to discover.
Voice search is not a guarantee that every service, title, accent, language, or command will be recognized. When results are incomplete, try the exact title, use the on-screen keyboard, or search within the streaming app itself. Check the remote’s microphone and privacy settings before replacing batteries or the remote.

5. Mirror a phone, tablet, or computer
Roku supports screen mirroring from supported Android and Windows devices. Compatible iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices can use AirPlay. Mirroring displays the source device’s screen on the television, which is useful for photos, presentations, web pages, and apps that do not have a Roku channel.

Android or Windows mirroring
- Connect the Roku and source device to the same network.
- Enable screen mirroring on the Roku in Settings, if the option is available.
- On Android, open the device’s cast, Smart View, wireless display, or screen-mirroring control. On Windows, use the wireless-display or cast control.
- Select the Roku from the available devices.
- When the television displays a connection request, approve it with the Roku remote.
AirPlay from Apple devices
- Put the Roku and iPhone, iPad, or Mac on the same network.
- Open Control Center or the media-sharing menu on the Apple device.
- Select Screen Mirroring or the AirPlay destination and choose the Roku.
- Accept the request on the television if prompted.
Mirroring and AirPlay support vary by Roku model, OS version, country, and source device. Some apps block mirroring because of licensing restrictions; a black screen in one app does not necessarily mean the Roku connection failed. The Roku mobile app can also function as a remote, display personal photos and videos, and provide private listening on supported devices.
