If your TV’s picture is fine but its menus and apps feel sluggish, try a restart, finish available updates, clear the cache for a troublesome app, and remove apps you no longer use. If streaming buffers but menus are responsive, troubleshoot the network instead. When the TV’s built-in platform is the real bottleneck, an HDMI streaming player can provide a newer interface without replacing the screen.
First, identify what feels slow
Slow menus, delayed remote responses, or apps that take a long time to open point toward the TV’s software or hardware. Buffering, pauses during playback, or unexpectedly low video quality point more toward the network. A picture that looks too smooth is a settings preference, not a speed problem.

1. Restart the TV and let updates finish
Restart before troubleshooting further
A restart can clear temporary problems. Use the TV’s restart option if one is available; otherwise, turn it off, disconnect power briefly, reconnect it, and start it again. The exact restart procedure depends on the model.

Check for a system update
Look in Settings for a section named Software Update, System Update, About, or Support. On Google TV, Google documents this route: Settings → System → About → System update. See Google’s guidance for fixing a slow or laggy Google TV device.
Install available updates and allow app updates to finish before judging performance. Google notes that a TV may run more slowly while app updates are in progress. Updates can fix bugs or add features, but they do not guarantee faster performance; the result depends on the TV and the release.
2. Clear the cache for an app that misbehaves
If one app is slow or glitchy while others work normally, clear that app’s cache if your TV offers the option. On the cited TCL Google TV interface, the route is Settings → Apps → See all apps → [app] → Clear cache. The labels and availability differ across TVs. TCL also documents a separate storage route for clearing cache across apps; check its Google TV troubleshooting instructions for your interface.

Cache clearing is not the same as clearing app data. Avoid choosing Clear data unless you are prepared to lose locally stored app settings or sign-in information. Google also recommends closing recently opened background apps when troubleshooting a sluggish Google TV device.
3. Remove apps you no longer use
Uninstalling unused apps can reduce clutter and free storage, which may help when limited space is part of the problem. Open the TV’s app-management settings, select an app you do not use, and choose its uninstall or remove option. Some built-in apps cannot be removed, and the exact controls depend on the platform.
Removing apps is a cleanup step, not a guaranteed speed upgrade. Prioritize apps that you installed and no longer need; do not delete anything you rely on simply to chase a performance claim.

4. Use Ethernet when playback—not menus—is the problem
If streaming stalls while the interface remains responsive, a wired Ethernet connection may improve stability when Wi-Fi signal or wireless hardware is the issue. Check whether your TV has an Ethernet port and whether a cable can reach your router. TCL documents wired network setup for its Google TV models in its slow-or-laggy TV guidance.
Ethernet can help deliver a more reliable network connection; it will not make an underpowered TV processor faster or fix laggy menus. If routing a long cable is impractical, powerline networking is one possible alternative, but its performance depends on the home’s electrical wiring and setup.
5. Reorganize the home screen
Move the apps you use most often toward the front of the home screen and hide or move unwanted recommendations where the platform allows it. Controls differ by TV, and some screens offer little customization.

This change makes the TV easier to navigate and can make it feel fresher, but it is not a processing-speed fix.

If the screen still looks good but the built-in smart-TV platform is outdated, sluggish, or missing apps you want, an external streaming player is the clearest hardware workaround. It connects to an HDMI input and runs its own streaming apps; the TV serves as the display. Before buying, confirm that you have a usable HDMI port and that the player supports the apps you need.
Compare devices by app availability, interface, remote and voice controls, and compatibility with your TV—not by assuming one platform is best. Tom’s Guide reported a typical range of $30–$150 for streaming devices in its March 6, 2026 article, depending on features; that is a general publisher estimate, not a live price check. Check current listings before you buy. A new player can replace an aging smart interface, but it cannot repair a failing panel or guarantee that every part of an old TV will feel new.

Optional: adjust picture settings if motion looks unnatural
If films look unnaturally smooth, try the Movie or Filmmaker picture mode if your TV offers it, or reduce motion smoothing. Samsung explains that its motion-smoothing controls can create a “soap opera effect” and notes: “Most movies, however, are filmed at 24 frames per second and are not intended to be viewed with these features.” The quote refers to motion-smoothing features, not every picture setting. Motion is a matter of preference: some viewers prefer smoothing for sports or other fast action. Names and options vary by model; Samsung’s controls are specific to its TVs, and other brands use different menus.
