For still photos in very dim light, the Pixel 10 Pro has the clearest independent evidence in this shortlist: in one TechRadar comparison at about 1.09 lux, its reviewer preferred the Pixel’s detail, color, and white balance to the iPhone 17 Pro and Galaxy S25 Ultra. That is one scene, not a universal ranking. For video, Digital Camera World favors the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max; the Galaxy S26 Ultra is a hardware-rich alternative whose night-processing claims come from Samsung, not an independent comparison.
The five options below are useful contenders, but they have not all been tested together under the same conditions. Choose according to what you shoot, and treat the evidence for each model accordingly.

How the five phones compare for night photography
| Phone | What the available evidence supports | Best fit | Evidence limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel 10 Pro | In TechRadar’s single low-light still-photo scene, the reviewer preferred its detail retention, color, and white balance to the iPhone 17 Pro and Galaxy S25 Ultra. Digital Camera World also highlights Pixel 10 Pro camera features, including RAW capture and pro controls. | Still photos in dim scenes, especially when you want control over capture. | The direct comparison covered one scene and three phones, not every night-photo situation. |
| Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra | Samsung lists a 200MP wide camera, a 50MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom, 10x optical-quality zoom, and wider apertures. Samsung also describes Nightography video processing and sensor-specific noise reduction. | Those who value the listed camera hardware and want to consider Samsung’s night-processing features. | The night-processing and light-gathering descriptions are manufacturer claims; the available sources do not establish an independent night-performance ranking. |
| Apple iPhone 17 Pro | In TechRadar’s comparison, its five-second shutter brightened the scene, but the reviewer found detail recovery middling and a magenta hue affecting color accuracy. Digital Camera World selects the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max as its video-focused picks. | Video-first buyers, based on Digital Camera World’s editorial assessment. | The still-photo observation is from one test scene. The video recommendation is not a night-video head-to-head result. |
| Google Pixel 10 Pro XL | Digital Camera World’s camera-phone guide covers the Pixel 10 Pro models’ still-photography strengths, RAW capture, and pro controls. | Readers considering the larger Pixel variant and its camera feature set. | No separate direct low-light result for the XL is established by the available comparison. |
| Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra | It was included in TechRadar’s low-light still-photo comparison. In that sample, the reviewer judged its detail weaker than the Pixel 10 Pro’s. | A reference point for readers evaluating the newer Samsung model family or comparing an existing phone. | This single-scene observation does not establish its performance across other night conditions. |
All three models in TechRadar’s scene comparison were photographed after the lights were switched off; the meter read about 1.09 lux, roughly 50 times less light than in the lit scene. The Pixel required Night Sight to be selected manually and captured for three seconds. Its result was darker than the iPhone’s, but the reviewer preferred its detail, color, and white balance. The iPhone used a five-second shutter and produced a brighter image, with the color and detail limitations noted above. A tripod-enabled Pixel exposure lasted 2 minutes 19 seconds and was excluded from the comparison. These observations describe that test, not a controlled ranking of all five phones.
Which one should you choose?
For the strongest supported still-photo pick
Start with the Pixel 10 Pro if night snapshots and dim indoor stills are your priority. It is the only option here with a favorable direct comparison against two other shortlisted phones in a described very-low-light scene. That advantage should not be read as a guarantee for moving people, concerts, or every lighting condition.

For video
Consider the iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max if video is your main concern: Digital Camera World names them its video-focused choices. That is an editorial recommendation, not evidence that either won a night-video test against the other phones listed here.
For camera hardware and Samsung’s night features
The Galaxy S26 Ultra merits consideration for its published camera specifications and Samsung’s Nightography claims. Samsung says it uses sensor-specific noise reduction and improved light gathering. Those statements describe the manufacturer’s design and processing claims; they do not prove that it beats the other phones in real-world night photos.

For a larger Pixel option or an older comparison point
The Pixel 10 Pro XL is a larger-variant choice with camera coverage in Digital Camera World’s guide, but the direct low-light result described here is for the Pixel 10 Pro. The Galaxy S25 Ultra is useful as a tested comparison point, though the one-scene result should not be generalized to all situations.
What matters most in a night-phone camera
- Detail and noise: Brightening a dark image can reveal more of the scene, but it can also soften fine detail or make grain more visible. Look for whether faces, hair, and textured surfaces remain clear, not just whether the photo looks bright.
- Color and white balance: Streetlights, LEDs, and stage lighting can shift skin and neutral surfaces toward an inaccurate hue. A bright result is not necessarily a faithful one.
- Movement: Longer capture can help a stationary scene, but movement by the photographer or subject can blur the image. This matters especially for people, pets, and performers.
- Automatic night mode and capture delay: A phone may detect low light and activate a night mode, but behavior can vary by scene and settings. Notice whether the mode engages, how long the capture takes, and whether the subject stays still long enough.
- Video and stabilization: Still-photo performance does not establish night-video quality. If you record concerts or night walks, assess video separately, including exposure, color, stabilization, and sound.
- Telephoto use: A camera’s zoom specifications do not by themselves establish clean results in low light. A dim scene can make detail at longer focal lengths harder to preserve.
- Astrophotography: Capturing stars usually requires a stable phone and a long capture. A compact tripod or steady stand can help, but is optional for ordinary night snapshots.
Why night mode cannot solve every dark scene
Night Sight combines or extends captures to gather more light, but a phone camera still needs some light to record an image. Google explains that the camera adjusts capture according to phone stability and scene movement: a still scene can use longer light-gathering capture, while movement can lead to shorter exposures to reduce blur. Multiple darker, sharper frames may be merged. This can improve a static scene; it is not a promise to freeze fast action.

For a moving subject, try to keep the phone steady and take several frames. A shorter capture may preserve movement better but leave the image darker. For a posed portrait or stationary street scene, allowing the phone to complete its night capture may yield more visible detail.
Tips for sharper night photos and star shots
Ordinary low-light photos
- Hold the phone steadily and avoid moving it until the capture finishes.
- Check whether Night Sight or another night mode is active. Google says Night Sight can activate automatically in low-light Photo or Portrait mode, but TechRadar had to enable it manually on the Pixel 10 Pro in its particular test.
- For people or other moving subjects, expect a trade-off between brightness and motion blur. A night mode cannot guarantee a sharp result when the subject moves during a longer capture.
Astrophotography
- Move away from city lights and other artificial light sources.
- Go out at least 45–90 minutes after sunset for star photos, as Google advises.
- Set the phone on a steady surface or tripod, then keep it still until the exposure finishes.
What the available night-photo survey figures mean
Samsung Newsroom UK reported figures from Samsung-commissioned research in Britain in 2026: 96% of respondents said they had given up trying to take photos at night because their device was not up to the job; 62% said they felt frustrated with after-dark picture quality; 36% said phone-camera quality was the biggest barrier to taking night photos more often; and 40% said they had been unable to capture a meaningful moment because their phone did not perform in low light. These are company-commissioned findings reported for Britain, not independent industry-wide measurements; the cited passage does not provide full survey methodology.
