Switching to a Microsoft Surface Laptop can mean choosing a touchscreen in a size that fits your routine, matching the hardware to your workload, and getting access to Copilot+ PC features on eligible configurations. The practical advantages depend on the exact model: display specifications, ports, battery estimates, and feature eligibility vary across the current 13-inch, 13.8-inch, and 15-inch lineup.
1. Choose a touchscreen size that suits your work
The current Surface Laptop family includes 13-inch, 13.8-inch, and 15-inch touchscreen options. A smaller screen may better suit a commute or tight desk, while a larger one gives more room for documents and side-by-side windows. Neither is automatically the better choice: consider how often you travel, whether you use an external monitor, and how much screen space your everyday tasks need. See Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 8th Edition overview for the current family.

Display capabilities differ by size. In Microsoft’s Store comparison, the 13-inch option is listed at up to 60 Hz, while 13.8-inch and 15-inch options are listed at up to 120 Hz; the larger two sizes also list HDR. Check the precise configuration before buying, since a family-level description does not guarantee that every SKU has identical display features. Microsoft Store model comparison.

Processor, memory, and storage options vary with model and configuration. That range lets buyers compare a setup for everyday browsing and office work with one suited to heavier multitasking, but changing to Surface does not by itself establish a speed improvement over your current laptop. Look at the exact SKU’s processor, memory, and storage, then compare them with the applications and files you actually use.

Also check app and peripheral compatibility before switching, particularly if your work depends on specialized software or older accessories. The current product page describes the 8th Edition family; specifications from older devices, such as the Surface Laptop 5, are not interchangeable. For that older model’s distinct specifications, see Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 5 specifications.
3. Get Copilot+ PC features on eligible configurations
Microsoft promotes Copilot+ PC experiences for qualifying Surface Laptop configurations. Eligibility and feature availability depend on the device configuration and applicable requirements, so do not assume that every Surface Laptop—or every configuration sold under the family name—includes every advertised AI experience. Before choosing a model, verify that the specific SKU qualifies and that the feature you want is available for your device and software setup. Microsoft’s Surface Laptop buying guide discusses its model recommendations and Copilot+ positioning.

- With 16 GB of memory, runs as many programs as you want without losing the execution
- The 13.5" 2256 x 1504 screen provides a great movie watching experience
- 512 GB SSD is enough to store your essential documents and files, favorite songs, movies and pictures
- 8 Hours battery run time helps you stay unwired and work longer non-stop
4. Find ports and charging options that fit your accessories
USB-C is listed across the current family, but the available port mix is not identical across models. USB4, USB-A, Surface Connect, a headphone jack, and a card reader may differ by size or configuration. That matters if you regularly connect a monitor, external storage, wired headphones, or a camera card: the right combination can reduce adapter needs, while a mismatch may mean bringing a hub or changing accessories.

5. Consider Microsoft’s advertised battery estimates for mobile use
Microsoft’s 2026 product and Store pages, accessed October 4, 2026, list these maximum battery estimates for the current models. They use different test categories, so video playback and active web use should not be treated as directly interchangeable measures.
| Model | Local video playback | Active web use |
|---|---|---|
| 13-inch | Up to 23 hours | Up to 16 hours |
| 13.8-inch | Up to 20 hours | Up to 16 hours |
| 15-inch | Up to 22 hours | Up to 14 hours |
These are Microsoft’s advertised maximum estimates, not a promise of the runtime you will get. Microsoft states: “Battery life varies significantly based on device configuration, usage, network and feature configuration, signal strength, settings, and other factors.” Your results can therefore differ with workload, configuration, network, and settings. Consult the live product page and Store comparison for the model-specific test notes and current figures.

- Size and portability: compare the 13-inch, 13.8-inch, and 15-inch options with your travel and workspace needs.
- Display: confirm resolution, refresh rate, and HDR support for the exact configuration.
- Hardware: match processor, memory, and storage to your workload rather than assuming a brand change guarantees faster performance.
- Compatibility: check essential applications and accessories, including any device-specific connection needs.
- Features and cost: verify Copilot+ eligibility for the SKU and compare its current price with the alternatives you are considering.
- Battery: use Microsoft’s test-category estimates as a reference point, not as a guarantee of personal runtime.
