5 Open-Source Tools to Improve Your Development Workflow on Windows

PowerToys, Windows Terminal, WinGet, AutoHotkey, and ShareX address different kinds of Windows development-workflow friction. Here’s what each does and how to choose.

For a Windows development workflow, start with the friction you want to remove: PowerToys for window and keyboard adjustments, Windows Terminal for working across shells, WinGet for command-line app setup, AutoHotkey for repeated desktop actions, and ShareX for screen documentation. They solve different problems, so there is no need to install all five. The phrase “open-source tools to improve my development workflow on Windows” describes a set of practical options—not a promise of measured productivity gains.

Choose tools by the task that slows you down

This shortlist spans five distinct parts of a Windows development routine. Pick only the tools that address your own bottlenecks; none is a complete development environment, and the list is not a performance ranking.

Workflow friction Tool What it is for
Arranging windows, changing shortcuts, or launching work PowerToys A collection of Windows utilities, including window layouts, key remapping, and launch features.
Moving among command-line shells Windows Terminal A configurable interface for PowerShell, Command Prompt, WSL, and other shells.
Installing and configuring applications WinGet A command-line package manager for application installation and configuration.
Repeating desktop actions AutoHotkey A Windows scripting utility for macros and automation.
Capturing or recording a screen ShareX A screen capture and recording tool useful for visual documentation.

PowerToys: adjust windows, keys, and launch workflows

Microsoft describes PowerToys as free, open-source utilities for Windows power users and developers. Rather than doing one job, it groups distinct helpers that can reduce small sources of friction around the desktop. Check Microsoft’s PowerToys documentation for current features, requirements, and installation guidance; the page was updated September 14, 2026.

Useful examples

  • FancyZones lets you organize windows into layouts, which can help keep an editor, terminal, and reference material arranged consistently.
  • Keyboard Manager can remap keys and shortcuts when the defaults do not suit your setup.
  • Workspaces can launch a set of applications into chosen positions, making it useful when you routinely begin work with the same group of tools.
  • Command Palette can search for files, invoke WinGet, switch windows, access clipboard history, and open configured Windows Terminal profiles. It needs to be enabled and running in the background. See Microsoft’s Command Palette overview for current details; it was updated August 25, 2026.

Windows Terminal: keep multiple shells in one interface

Windows Terminal can host PowerShell, Command Prompt, WSL, and other command-line shells in a customizable terminal. That makes it a sensible choice if your work crosses between Windows-native commands and Linux tools under WSL. Microsoft lists it among its Windows developer tools; consult the current documentation for setup and supported options.

Terminal is an interface for shells, not a replacement for them. You can configure profiles for the environments you use and open each in the same terminal application rather than treating every shell as a separate desktop workflow.

WinGet: make application setup more repeatable

WinGet is Microsoft’s command-line tool for installing and configuring applications. It can help when setting up a machine or repeating common app-install steps from a command line. Microsoft’s WinGet documentation explains its current use and options.

It is a package-management tool, not a full development environment. It does not install every application, and using it does not guarantee that two machines will have identical configurations: app availability, versions, and other setup choices still matter. Check the current package catalog and instructions for the applications you need.

AutoHotkey: automate a repeated Windows action

AutoHotkey is a Windows macro-creation and automation-oriented scripting utility. It is most relevant when you can identify a desktop action you perform repeatedly and want to turn that sequence into a script. The AutoHotkey project site describes the tool and provides current project information.

Automation is not set-and-forget by default: scripts need deliberate setup and maintenance. Start with a narrowly defined, repeatable task, and review what a script will do before relying on it in a development workflow.

ShareX: capture screens for bug reports and explanations

ShareX supports screen capture and recording, which can help when documenting a bug, showing a UI issue, or preparing a visual explanation for a teammate. Its project describes it as a free, open-source tool that can also upload images, text, and other files to destinations. See the ShareX project site for current capabilities and setup information.

Capturing a screen and sending it somewhere are different actions. Before using an upload destination, check where files will be sent and whether the captured material contains private data, credentials, or work that should not be shared.

A practical way to build your workflow

  1. Identify one recurring friction point. Decide whether it is shell switching, application setup, desktop repetition, window arrangement, or visual documentation.
  2. Choose the matching tool. Use the comparison above to avoid adding utilities that do not solve a current problem.
  3. Check current requirements and instructions. Project features, Windows support, defaults, and package availability can change; use the linked official pages before installing or configuring a tool.
  4. Introduce configuration gradually. Add a layout, profile, package workflow, script, or capture destination only when you understand its effect and can maintain it.
