Five newly announced laptops make a worthwhile shortlist, but only one has a firm near-term availability date in the announcements reviewed: Microsoft says its Surface Laptop 13-inch (2nd edition) goes on sale beginning October 13, 2026. ASUS has announced two ProArt models for an IFA 2026 showcase, while HP has announced two OmniBooks without publishing retail dates or prices in the cited announcements. Treat the four undated models as watch-list options—not confirmed imminent launches.
The five laptops to watch
The details below come from manufacturer announcements, not independent tests. The dates and prices may vary by country, and the four ASUS and HP models without retail dates could take longer to reach stores.

One dated availability statement
Microsoft says the Surface Laptop 13-inch (2nd edition) will be available beginning October 13, 2026. That is the clearest near-term date among these five, but it does not establish availability in every country, nor does it tell you which configurations will be sold locally.

ASUS says the ProArt P16 and P14 will be showcased at IFA 2026. A showcase confirms that ASUS is presenting the models, not when buyers can order them. HP’s September 4 announcement introduces the OmniBook Ultra 16 and OmniBook X 14, but the reviewed release does not give a sale date or price.

For context, Dell’s XPS Googlebook is not a clean fit for an upcoming-laptop list at this cutoff: Dell said it was already available through Best Buy and Google Stores when announced, with Dell.com availability planned for October. Dell also mentioned two Alienware laptop classes planned for later in 2026, but did not name exact models or dates in the reviewed announcement. Consider the Surface Laptop if timing and everyday portability matter
The Surface is the strongest option to track if you want a conventional Windows laptop with a touchscreen and a published near-term availability date. Microsoft says its comparisons, tested in September 2026, showed up to 18% more efficient battery performance and over 60% faster graphics than the prior generation; these are Microsoft’s claims, not independent results, and Microsoft notes that performance varies by configuration. Consider the ProArt models if you need a creator-focused laptop
The ProArt P16 and P14 are worth watching if your work benefits from the RTX Spark platform. ASUS states battery capacities of 99Wh for the P16 and 90Wh for the P14. Capacity alone does not establish runtime, however, and the cited announcement does not settle their prices, configurations, or retail dates.
Consider HP’s OmniBooks for intensive local AI or creative work
HP positions the OmniBook Ultra 16 and X 14 for creators and developers. For the Ultra 16, HP claims up to 128GB unified memory and up to 1 petaflop FP4 AI performance in specified configurations, plus up to 17 hours of battery life under HP’s stated use conditions. HP also says the laptop can recharge to 50% in approximately 30 minutes. These are company claims rather than independent test results; check the configuration and test conditions before using them to predict your own experience. The release does not establish the X 14’s weight, battery runtime, or price.

What to check before choosing
Announcements do not answer the questions that decide whether a laptop is good value for your needs. Once local listings and independent reviews appear, compare:
- Regional availability and full price: Confirm that the exact model and configuration are sold where you live, then compare actual retailer prices rather than assuming a US launch price applies elsewhere.
- Workload fit: Match the processor, graphics capabilities, and memory configuration to your software and projects. Do not treat an AI performance figure as a guarantee for every application.
- Portability and real battery life: Check weight and independent battery tests under workloads resembling yours. Battery capacity or a manufacturer’s “up to” claim is not a direct measure of day-to-day runtime.
- Review evidence: Look for independent performance and thermal tests, and examine keyboard and display quality, repairability, and warranty terms.
Should you wait?
If you need a laptop immediately, these announcements do not make waiting the default choice: only the Surface has a stated near-term availability date, and a date alone says nothing about whether its price and performance suit you. If your purchase is flexible, track the ASUS and HP models until local release dates, configurations, prices, and independent reviews are available. None of the announcements establishes a definitive winner or proves that waiting will save money or deliver better value.
