5 Monitor Configurations for Different Workflows: Which Setup Fits You?

Compare five monitor layouts for different work patterns, then check viewing distance, positioning, desk space, and computer display support.

The best monitor configuration depends on what you do, how much desk space you have, how comfortably you can view the screens, and what your computer supports. These five practical layouts are options—not a measured ranking or a promise of higher productivity. Start with the screen arrangement that suits your work, then position it to fit your posture and viewing distance.

Which monitor configuration fits your work?

Configuration Useful for What to consider
One centered landscape monitor Work that mainly uses one active application or window Keep it directly in front and set a comfortable height and distance.
One centered curved ultrawide A continuous horizontal workspace Check desk depth and whether the full screen is comfortable to view.
Two landscape monitors, one primary A main task alongside reference material or another persistent window Center the primary display; put the secondary beside it.
Two displays used equally Work split between two screens Place them side by side within a comfortable viewing angle and minimize head movement.
Landscape plus portrait A combination of wide work and content that benefits from a tall page view Confirm the display rotates and can be positioned at a suitable height.

The sizes below are examples Dell includes in its ergonomics guidance, published September 2, 2025—not recommended sizes for everyone or a ranking of layouts. Dell Monitor Ergonomics Recommendations

1. One centered landscape monitor

Put one screen directly in front of you. This is a straightforward arrangement when you mainly work in one application or window. Dell includes a 27-inch standard landscape display among its examples. Set the screen so you can read it without leaning forward or tilting your head.

2. One centered curved ultrawide

A curved ultrawide offers a continuous horizontal canvas without a second screen beside it. Dell’s examples include a 34-inch curved landscape display. Treat it as a workspace option, not evidence that an ultrawide improves productivity. Consider desk depth and whether you can comfortably see the full width.

#1 Best Overall

  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents

3. Two landscape monitors, one primary

Center the screen you use most and place the secondary screen next to it. OSHA recommends putting the primary monitor directly in front of you. A second screen can hold reference material or communications, for example, but that is a possible use rather than a tested result. Dell’s examples include two 24-inch landscape displays.

4. Two displays used equally

If you divide your work evenly across two screens, put them next to each other and keep both within a comfortable viewing angle. OSHA advises minimizing head movement when two monitors are used equally. The seam between the screens can sit near your forward viewing position if that arrangement suits your tasks.

Philips 22 Inch Computer Monitor FHD 100Hz VA VESA Flicker-Free, 221V8LB | 1920×1080 LED Monitor, 4ms GtG, Adaptive Sync, HDMI 1.4, Tilt Adjust, Low Blue Light, 4yr Advance Replacement Warranty

  • SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter

5. Landscape plus portrait

A landscape screen alongside a portrait-oriented one combines a wide view with a taller page. Dell includes a 24-inch monitor in portrait orientation in its examples. This may suit content that benefits from a tall view, but the available guidance does not establish portrait orientation as better for any particular profession. Check that the monitor can rotate and adjust it to a comfortable height.

How should you position your monitors?

  • Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.
  • Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
  • Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
  • In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
  • Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
  • Distance: OSHA gives 20–40 inches (50–100 cm) as a generally preferred viewing distance; its quick tips say to keep a monitor at least 20 inches away. If text is too small, increase its size rather than leaning forward.
  • Height and gaze: Position the monitor top at or slightly below eye level. OSHA says the screen center is normally 15–20 degrees below horizontal eye level. Bifocal users may need a lower screen to avoid tilting the head back.
  • Position: Keep the primary screen in front. OSHA says monitors should not be more than 35 degrees to either side. For equally used displays, arrange them within a comfortable viewing angle and minimize repeated head movement. OSHA: Evaluation Checklist
  • Glare and tilt: Place the screen perpendicular to windows where possible, and tilt it perpendicular to your line of sight—usually no more than 10–20 degrees. Adjust the screen position and room lighting to reduce reflections.
  • Breaks: Periodically look at a distant object, stop and blink regularly, and alternate with non-computer tasks when possible.

What should you check before adding another screen?

Multiple monitors work only if the computer can drive them and the necessary ports and cables are available. Dell’s setup guidance discusses display support, connections, settings, and mounting options. Dell: How to Set Up Dual Monitors

  1. Check the computer’s display support. Confirm the supported number of displays and graphics capability for your computer; do not assume that available sockets alone mean it can run every desired arrangement.
  2. Match ports and connections. Check the computer and monitor ports and the cable or adapter needed for each screen. HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB-C are common connection types listed by Dell; the right choice depends on the devices.
  3. Set each display’s mode. Use your operating system’s display settings to select each monitor’s supported resolution and orientation. If screens differ in size, resolution, or refresh rate, settings adjustments may be needed; similar displays can make transitions smoother.
  4. Plan positioning and mounting. Make sure the desk has room for the layout and that each screen can reach a comfortable position. A stand, mount, or adjustable monitor arm is optional. Before choosing an arm, check VESA compatibility where applicable, monitor weight, adjustment range, desk-clamp clearance, and cable reach.

How to choose among the five layouts

  • Choose one centered landscape display if your work is mostly on one active window and you want a simple arrangement.
  • Consider a curved ultrawide if you want a continuous horizontal workspace and have room to position it comfortably.
  • Choose a primary-plus-secondary pair if one screen is the main focus and another can hold supporting material.
  • Consider equally used dual displays when tasks are genuinely split between screens; place both so you can view them without frequent, wide head turns.
  • Consider a landscape-and-portrait pair when a tall view is useful to you and the monitor can rotate and be positioned properly.

Whichever layout you choose, make sure the computer supports it and position the primary viewing area in front of you. Available desk space, comfortable viewing, and display adjustability matter as much as the number of screens.
